I assume that either he was thrown out of the order....or he left because he didn't believe in the whole mage-templar war.... Maybe a little bit of both
Maybe he's just finding sane Templars and trying to hold a section together?

Obviously she was always a bit of a hard lined zealot, but for a young man who'd just been through so much trauma, still so full of anger and frustration at the suffering he and his Templar brethren had recently endured, it's no wonder he felt some kind of bond with her. He was looking for someone to reaffirm and agree with the way he was feeling, and to an extent I think Meredith used that to her advantage. Cullen did begin to heal and soften a bit during his time in Kirkwall, but he obviously still had a great deal of respect for the woman, I don't blame him for not being able to face or admit the truth until it punched him square in the face and forced him to act.
Man, I can't wait to see how he's holding up and ask him what the past few years between the events of DA2 and the moment we meet him in DAI have been like!
Basically this! ^^
He did... wonder, though. And that's what I wish had been more visible. If only to make it more apparent to anti-Cullen folks that he didn't just flip a switch. Because it does seem kind of like that when we all know he had doubts brewing before. He may not have been convinced Meredith was loony, but he still... wondered...

But which Order...? ![]()
But which Order...?
Templar
If Cullen isn't a divine loyal Templar, I imagine he would have left the order entirely. Judging by what we know about him thus far (which can obviously change by the next game), I can't see him following Lambert's ideals.
I wonder if he becomes his own kind of templar. A leader, if you will, of moderate templars who look out for the mages' welfare just as much as they do the mundanes. Oh, to dream.
Did you guys see this in the Twitter thread?

Any chance we will find out if Cullen is a companion in the near future?
David Hulegaard@HulegaardBooks: @user we will absolutely answer that question at some point before launch.

That would be a thing!
I honestly think he will be divine loyal/leading whatever Templars didn't follow Lambert's ideals. That's what I think, anyway, especially if he's a companion. I mean... our companions ARE meant to be the best at what they do/leaders this time around. We ain't leadin' no ragtag team of misfits in Inquisition.

I posted it myself, but this is a much better spot to be seen in!
Thank you!
I wonder when we'll see him. A suprise reveal on a Follower Friday? A conversation held in the Skyhold, where he's your military advisor? Accidental leak via German magazine? A dream? A vision!

Who knows if he found any. Maybe this war has caused many of the templars to resort to more.....desperate....measures. He could've been a lone lamb in a pit of wolves. *enter imprisoned Cullen ^//^*
This is a good point because if you are a person like Meredith Cullen is the perfect guy to use and place in your second command.
Haha. This thread moves so fast, I can't keep up ever. lol
It's nice to know it'll be settled before launch, at least. My guess is that, if he's a companion, it'll be a Follower Friday. If he's an NPC, then they'll probably explain the advisory system at some point and he'll be introduced with Scribe Girl and probably Leliana.
Exactly! Hell, in his codex entry it pretty much says that Meredith recognised that he had the same opinions as her and saw it as an opportunity to have him teach the recruits just how dangerous magic/mages are. That's why she promoted him through the ranks so quickly, she totally used his traumatic experience to her advantage.
... Makes me feel even more sad for Cullen. It's ok though, my Inquisitor will give him all the unconditional love and affection he needs, with no ulterior motive... (aside from getting him in the sack, obviously, LOL!)
You just want that undoubtedly long Sword of the Maker. ![]()
Don't worry, I want it too lol
That would be a thing!

True, I suppose one would expect him to have some kind of leadership role if he's a companion. If he's just an NPC, maybe not. But I really don't see him following Lambert et al. either. So in some sense, if he does that, he's not a templar any more by definition. I mean, by breaking the Nevarran Accord, one would expect that the Seekers and Templar would retain the rights to the templar logo and name, you know? So, if he's still templar affiliated, he could be amongst the few still loyal to the Divine. Or... who knows, all these shifting loyalties could lead him to take Door C, and do his own thing.
Basically this! ^^

Can I just say how much I love reading all the theories based on lore? It's mindboggling to me how much you all retain. And as someone who hasn't read the books or comics or watched any of the 'toons it's always so fascinating to 'listen' to you chat about everything. I'm learning so much more about the game world from this thread.
I basically just sit here nodding my head with my jaw hanging open a lot. I expect my game experience will be a lot richer next time around!
Do you remember the Gameinformer and how it said "Fan favorite knight captain" and we all screamed and melted with joy. Then were nervous they just assumed it was him and didn't understand? But THEY were right! And now we know he is an LI and I'm still holding the faith our boy is a companion. If he isn't I'll just keep him in my fortress as the official nug wrestler and horse washer! Or maybe I dunno my military general I guessss
Yay!! *makes a club of optimists* :3

...now I have this delightfully idealistic vision of moderate Templars unifying with moderate Mages and forming bonds somewhat akin to the set up in the Wheel of Time books, between Aes Sedai and Warders ^.^ Just.. without the corruption and gender skews and with the Warders having the added task of watching their partner for demon corruption. More of a symbiosis.I wonder if he becomes his own kind of templar. A leader, if you will, of moderate templars who look out for the mages' welfare just as much as they do the mundanes. Oh, to dream.
It also shows that until that final battle he had no idea about the red Lyrium idol or that it had amplified her paranoia etc. Mind you, she did lock herself away a lot once that idol started messing with her head, so I guess that would be another reason, lol.
True. I forgot about that. He may have thought others were being unfair to call her loony just because she was a bit more reclusive than usual until she came out of hiding and he saw what she had become and thought "Andraste's pyre! You ARE loony!" ![]()
Yay!! *makes a club of optimists* :3
I would never consider myself an optimist, but I am feeling slightly more positive about Cullen's chances today than I was yesterday! Team Rogue Warden! ![]()
I... don't hate characters for reasons like that? I'm not even bothered by how Isolde talks, so I guess I ruin that 'universally hated' theory.
I hated Isolde for making me do a bunch of sh*t to save her son, husband, and village. My first playthrough I couldn't even be bothered to save the kid :3

Whatever, it makes sense in my head. *sleepy*
It's funny to me that this is now so widespread an idea when it used to seem like you had to pick a side. I have a fic bunny nibbling on my ankles to write a story about that.
