All you have to do is say you take responsibility for Merrill's actions which Hawke actually says something along the lines of he/she won't let Merrill's blood magic hurt anyone, I believe. I usually always go the friendship path with Merrill. I find it very hard to rival her, she's so sweet!

 

I always rival Merrill.  It's so easy, really.  All you do is deny her the tool she needs to fix the mirror and then continue to argue against putting it back together whenever you can.  It helps that I had her in party during the "Night Terrors" quest and she called Feynriel a "halfbreed".  I realized Merrill was just as cute and ignorant and purely racist as anyone can be, so ticking her off suddenly became simple enough.  Plus, my canon Hawke is an aggressive personality.  He can be ... blunt.

 

That all being said, I've never killed off her clan.  I didn't agree with Merrill but I never agreed with the notion of killing her.  Especially after Marethari went so far to save her.
