I generally hate people who constantly go on about killing a certain character for whatever reason, but I really like Cullen's Armour :( I wants it.

i like his armor, too. i really do. maybe not all the time, but i love it. i esp. like the helmet. oh, i wanted that lion helm. but okay. that's your thing then Cullen. I'll let him have it.

As an ESL who plays in English, one thing I wonder is how many players turn on the subtitles. I see people on this forum misspelling lore names quite often, so I guess not many?

I always keep subtitles on, cause I tend to mishear or miss a word or two when playing, and subtitles instantly correct the problem for me.

Same here. English may be by first (and only) language, but that doesn't mean I'm good at it.

I always enjoy having subtitles, on TV, movies and games. One of my biggest pet peeves is when subtitles aren't on by default, and then I keep missing a word or something in the opening cutscenes, which are usually one of the longest cutscenes in the game.

Oh and I loathe subtitles that scroll up, rather than flashing for what the character is saying. Drives me up the wall.

I always love subtitles on everything. I'm much better at reading than listening when it comes to fully comprehending something. It actually secretly bothers me when I'm watching a movie or playing a game with someone and they're like "turn the subtitles off, they're annoying."

*grumbles* "haha yeah, sure thing..."  <_<

Thanks for the replies. I hear a lot about English speakers not liking subtitles, so it's interesting to hear something else.

For other media, I have a bit of the opposite problem. I'm so used to subtitles since before I learned English, even now that I don't need them I have a hard time keeping my eyes from them when I'm at the movies, for example, but I try. In fact, I'm so used to subtitles, I miss them when watching movies in my own language, because I miss words here and there and it pisses me off xD But for media like Dragon Age I insist on subtitles to make sure I don't miss anything and learn the lore words. And I have a harder time with British English, so it helps with that too.

I use subtitles as well, just in case I missed something or couldn't hear properly. But I always get distracted and start reading them and focusing on that instead of paying attention to the person talking. I need to work on that. : L

They are especially helpful for banter that starts right before or after a battle~

Oh it is so helpful for banter! My laptop has the worst speakers so I often can't hear the banter that well. Once the banter subtitles show up I can focus and hear the rest.

yeah, ClassicBox, I do that, too. Which is why I turn off the subtitles.

I've started turning the subtitles off because I spent more time reading them than I was actually watching the scenes play out, LOL!

Reading and watching at the same time is second nature to me but not looking at the subtitles at all is so hard. It's a problem when watching 3D movies because reading the subs then gives me a headache so I try hard to ignore them. It's funny because I was watching 3D Iron man 3 with my boyfriend and ignoring the subs and 30 minutes in my eyes rebelled and I looked and the translation was so wrong! Afterward I told my bf I wasn't sure he watched the same movie I did xD

I love the idea of not using subtitles and everything being more "cinematic", as the Bioware settings screens always seem to put it. But in practice I keep them on because regardless of the game I'm playing, my husband has a tendency to think of something snarky to yell over it right as some un-repeatable dialogue starts. And I don't want to discourage him from snarking on my games because that's the main way he ever gets interested in them!

(p.s. I know I said I'd be hiding from spoilers right now but between the new trailer this week and the 5 hour layover I'm enjoying right now I couldn't resist popping in a few times this week... don't mean to be some kind of dramatic cheeseball flouncing and un-flouncing, just apparently can't stay away from the BSN completely at times like this)

I know :( Even if DG doesn't like it lol it IS canon now that you can go for 30 years before having to heed your Calling. The Warden and Alistair have only been tainted for 10 years, and even if Blackwall is a veteran, could've only been 20 years for him.

How it is canon? The fact that Alistair said it work like this (even without considering his actual inexperience in Warden stuffs at the time) doesn't mean much. He said he never assumed lyrium and that templars don't need it, which was already proven wrong/retconnetted. The same could go for the Calling, if the writers decided it works like Gaider said (at best 30 years, and worse during the Blight).
Regardless, we don't know how much time Blackwall was a Warden. If he's 50 and was recruited when he was 20, he could still be near the Calling.
I don't really want him (or the Warden and Alistair) to go through the Calling during the game, but we have no clue on how close he could be to his Calling regardless of the two theories on the taint/Calling.

I grow up watching movies, series and animated movies in the original language with subtitles on my own language. Now i don`t need them but i`m so used to it that i always turn them on :P, and i don`t get distracted by them. In games i always use the english subtitles so i can`t miss anything important (like party banters) and to learn the lore terms right  :D.

I'm surprisingly good at reading subtitles I think. If a quiet whispered conversation I needed to read the subtitles for was happening while the main action was taking place towards the top of the screen, I could still read the subtitles at the bottom and follow the action.

I miss too much without subtitles to want them turned off. I even turn them on with movies I've watched several times.

I will say that my one caveat with subtitles is that I read them extremely fast, often getting to certain parts when the voices are several words behind, so I tend to see what's gonna happen more or less even before the voices are done speaking.

Me neither, but it's possible Blackwall is close to it. If he is, I hope he'll be like ME2 Thane.
As for lyrium addiction, Cullen didn't assume it for that much (compared to the fact that older templar can be fine), and willpower has a role in preventing the effects (Gregoir is very, very old, according to the codex, and he was still fine), so I don't think he'll suffer from it.

Lol, if there's one thing Cullen's got in bucket loads, it's willpower!

Agreed. I think that what he did in DAO (surviving for weeks to Uldred's torture, and retaining his sanity) is a very impressive feat.

Plus, I would imagine Templars need to be very disciplined and learn willpower as part of their job anyway. He's all good, at least until he gets fairly old anyway and by then it doesn't really matter.

The weak are either weeded out or are the ones that fall to demons/magic soonest.

We're gonna have to feed his lyrium habit though, as well as that of the Templars if we recruit them. Speaking of, this could be a way to gain an alliance with Orzammar, cause they could easily get us access to the lyrium.
