I agree completely. And what is worse is that we suffer from an over-saturation of tidbits of information and speculation therein. So the guessing game becomes much more difficult because we throw in all these bits and pieces of conjecture. Add to that the times were we are given patently erroneous information from mags and such and it becomes a shambles.

Bottom line: we're really our own worse enemies here :D

I think the reason I get most irritated with the so called "facts" is because I go onto other forum threads and people are mocking each other, stating how a character is one way or another, making the entire thread suddenly shift to a gloom and doom fest.

We re-watched it a couple of years ago and, though I found a little corny at times, it was still good. I particularly saw some relationships and characters in new and better ways. :) Greg's Cardassian doesn't show up until the finale, "What You Leave Behind". And he's pretty minor to boot. He rocks a gruff American sound though! ^_^

Edited to add: Oh god! TNG aged terribly! And I remembered so fondly too. At least the first few seasons anyway. It seemed better later on. :)

As I recall, the first season or two of TNG occurred during a writers' strike and so there seemed to be, to me at least, several plots from TOS that were recycled.

What I can't stand about "facts" is that they're often derived from someone's interpretation of what a dev says. And the parsing of their every word! OMG! Discussing the exact wordage is like splicing a hair into 6 different samples so you can put them under a spectrometer, microscope, X-ray, MRI, etc... The pages long debates over exactly what the words used could possibly mean. And then running with an assumption based on the analysis that most seems to jive with what is thought. I've stopped discussing what a dev says because it turns into a microscopic study of and versus or. *shakes head* I'm sorry if this offends anyone here. I'm not speaking of any one person directly but of the whole phenomenon I see all over the forum.

Yeah, a lot of us become a surly lot :/ with rampant pessimism, too. At least with some characters we have SOME past-games information, so I understand a lot of discussion about them, namely: Varric (the most known), Cassandra and Cullen (and barring the DotS movie, we actually "know" more about Cullen than Cassandra, I think). The rest are really unknowns: who knows where the Devs went with them. That's why speculation about them doesn't interest me, really... Now once the game is out and I get to "meet" all these characters, then I'll happily analyze and discuss... But right now I don't want my mind too cluttered with guesses and wishes and flights of headcanon, if that makes sense?

Hell, I'm even hesitant to get too close to any one idea about Cullen, because I want to be open and receptive to whatever we end up getting in game.

Like the "even spread" thing?  Does it mean 3/3/3 or that you'll have enough of each class?! I shouldn't find it so amusing because I have the same thoughts, but I think it's fair to say 3/3/3 is mostly likely what they meant. But it's not exact wording, so. If they'd just announce Cullen as NPC or companion, I could stop caring! [BEWAILS FATE TO THE STARS] [REALIZES IT IS DAY] [CURSES SUN INSTEAD]

Of course we're probably overthinking it. :D But honestly, it seems like it's a part of waiting. We analyze the sh!t out of *everything* to pass the time. *Snicker*

You know, I sometimes wonder if we at the forum suffer from over-saturation of information. To the outside public, if there's someone you can have a romantic relationship with in a Dragon Age game then they are also a companion. Cullen is a romance in Dragon Age? Oh, he's a companion! That's it, that's the end of it. Because we all visit the forums, we get tied up in the complexities of we saw this and we heard this and possibly they meant this.

In fact, has Bioware ever announced a strictly NPC romance? Was Chambers announced as a romance? Or Traynor or Cortez or Allers?

Are we over-thinking this whole thing?

When Cullen was announced as an LI, my first reaction was exactly that: He is a companion. But after reading more and more and people suddenly being sure that he is an NPC, I started to believe that as well. I don't want to be disappointed if he's not a companion. I mean, I'm sure I will like the companions, but I love party banter and companions reacting to what we do. He might be a companion, he might be an NPC. Hopefully we won't have to wait too long to find out, so that we can stop guessing about that (we could guess about lots of other things when we know the answer to that question :))

Agreed. I just think it's too early to assume anything and that nothing is absolute, yet. Especially the whole idea of NPC romances which has become fact to a lot of people even though the Devs never stated anything of the sort. LI's have, traditionally, always been companions, as well. So, unless they state otherwise, I am tossing the idea of NPC on the back-burner as it has not been done/stated at all within the history of the DA games. Plus, many people think there are connections between ME3 because of this, but they are their own respective teams. It's just the absolute assumptions that something is fact that gets to me. Such as GW being a companion, there being advisors, "Dorian", "Cole", what areas of the maps we are traveling, etc.

EDIT: Even the magazines have been off with information and those facts had to be addressed by the devs

Yes, exactly. Who knows, maybe both Cullen and the Grey Warden are NPCs and we have other companions that we never heard of until now. We don't know. Of course there could be NPC romances, but we have absolutely no confirmation. Well, at least they won't let us find out in the game if Cullen is a companion or not.

Oh, speculation is fine. It's when people start attacking each other, telling them they are wrong and then cause the whole thread to become depressed that I get irritated. Usually, if I am in that discussion, I will try to turn it to a more positive light because people start to take one thing as absolute fact. Everyone deserves a little bit of hope, no? ;)

On the other hand, too much hope can lead to heartbreak. So a little bit of Debbie-Doubting can be a good thing. Everything in moderation.

I agree, what I was stating is that I will throw in some hope if one thing is taken as fact and everyone gets depressed. Not that I would make something a fact, myself. Just with all the speculation, you can't assume too much of one thing.

EDIT: Perhaps it would be simpler to say that I like to play devil's advocate and express the other side of an issue. Such as, if people think for a fact Cullen= NPC, I'll state that there is a possibility that he is not, same as if people believe he is a companion, I'll state that there is a possibility that he is an NPC.

I find I can get over the heartbreaks and disappointments though. Time heals all wounds and all that  So for me it's more fun to spend most of my time being excited about stuff than to spend that time doubting and worrying and chewing my non-existent nails. Example: I was through the moon when they announced we could play as elves again. I let nothing stand in the way of my pure, unadulterated joy  Then the voice for the inquisitor came out. I was super depressed. Pretty much went through the stages of grief. (I'm being slightly sarcastic here, don't mean to offend anyone lol) I'm now at the stage of acceptance :P I'm fine with the voice; I mean, it'll do.

And I could be super nervous and anxious about the American voice -- will it be even deeper to accommodate dwarves and qunari? But I prefer to live in my happy place that tells me the voice will be light and full of life and will suit my quizzy perfectly :P

Nothing wrong with hoping, so long as you respect other people's hopes as well and understand that things'll happen one way or the other. Someone, somewhere, will be granted one of their wishes. :P

In any case, I'm really excited that Cullen is an LI. Even if it turns out that he's an NPC, he will still be a romance option and that's great. He sure has come a long way since DA:O. My first playthrough of DA:O was as a Dalish elf, so I only met him in the Broken Circle quest. My character wanted to help him because she helped everybody, but I thought that he was a bit unstable. So I was really surprised when I met him in the second game, I wouldn‘t have thought to see him again, especially like that. I was happy that he stood up for my mage supporting character at the end. And it‘s something he does regardless of how the player character responds to him in the game. It‘s not about Hawke, it‘s his own determination, his own beliefs of what is right and what is wrong. It was only after I beat the game for the first time that I started to think about his real development and how interesting it could be to explore that in a future game. That development convinced me that this was a character that I‘d like to know more about. And I‘m really happy that we can do so in the next game :)
