I don't think anyone has said anything on it and we don't know much about his past.  His writer eluded to finding those things out in-game however.

 

As for the reason of it being a lion it could be several things.  Lions are common in terms of heraldry.  Celine's coat of arms has it as well as the Theirin families heraldry (which has two).  Also there is the symbolism that a lion stands for: regal, stately, powerful (as Levi Dryden also makes the reference to people saying his family had the heart (or blood, can't remember off the top of my head) of lions.

 

Or it can be none of those and I'm way off base and it's for those with a kink for masks.  (I admit to nothing.)

No, and, Doubtful

Basically, this. No devs have commented on the lion specifically, but the lion also seems to be a symbol associated with the military branch of the  Inquisition so far. It shows up on Adamant Keep when it's upgraded military style (but not the other two styles) and is featured in the iconography on the Keep once upgraded on the War Table map. Now, it could be Orlesian, but I think it's even less likely that it's connected specifically to Celene.

Was Varric announced as not being a romance then? I dropped by the Twitter thread but the thread confuses me so I only went back a few pages to figure out what everyone was going on about before I gave up.

 

I'm sort of new to this game but I guess I sort of always assumed they wouldn't make him a LI because of Bianca. I think the other romance will be Blackwall, but that may just be wishful thinking. At least we have Cullen!

Yeah, it was confirmed in a Swedish article (I think it was Swedish) that Varric isn't an LI.

Just some personal musings but I wonder how long it will take me to get to the Cullen Romance.  I am kinda worried that I will have most of it spoiled for me.  Since I know my first playthrogh will be a Cassandra Romance.  Then I just know if I make a female Inquisitor I will prob romance Sera first.  So I just know my curiosity plus this board and youtube will end up spoiling Cullen Romance for me.....
