To be honest, it helps me relate to them, and I guess I do a sort of hybrid self-insert. But for example, I tend to get very frustrated with people, whether it's because they're not understanding me, or because I'm not able to understand them. That's gonna be a huge part of Auren's personality. Because I know that feel, bro lol It's not a trait to be proud of, but it's something that when given to a character I think makes him/her interesting.

It's all the icons at the bottom of the screen. You can map them to the numbers 1-8 so you can simply mash the button that you've mapped to the ability. It makes combat easy, at least for me. Fingers poised over the number keys with my thumb ready to hit the space bar to pause.
Edit to add: You can also click on the icons with the cursor.

Yeah I know how the button thing works; I think I'd go mental trying to do that in the midst of combat! I'd feel lost without my controller 
I prefer to use the mouse to "drive" and "steer". My daughter prefers to use wasd to move and click on the icons. I don't think either of us would know what to do with a controller as far as the PC is concerned.

How the UI looks on the PC when you're in tactical mode - IE, it's zoomed out to an isometric type view, generally paused, and you're issuing commands to your party In the above screenshot, I believe Cole and Solas have been issued Move to...commands (they have little icons out in the grass where they're to move to).
The GUI (hopefully) takes advantage of the point and click ability of a mouse, hopefully the ability to right and left click on things. I rarely play on consoles or with controllers, but have played with keyboard and mouse for...ehhh...let's just say since I was a teenager, and that it has been quite some time.
I use a Razer Naga gaming mouse. It has a number pad on the side where your thumb rests. I've found that much easier than trying to reach the row of numbers at the top of my keyboard, and much speedier than clicking the icons. :3

You could do that on 360, make them move to a certain location, then tell them to stay there. It was useful when you wanted a tank to block a certain path... but kind of frustrating when bad guys would slip past the tank and bum-rush me, while Fenris is still just standing there, watching as I get slaughtered lol (I only used that feature when I played on Hard with just me and Fenris)
