That's a very real possibility though. He has called both Dwarves and Qunari heathens in the past.

Maybe you have the opportunity to get him to change his opinion?

He has called Oghren and Kirkwall Qunari who are into Qun and oppose Chantry as heatens. Surface dwarf and Tal-Vashoth who have been raised in human society really aren't same than those. I hope Cullen is able to see that.

Ok, I admit I did not expect this course of events, what a bitter sweet disappointment with Blackwall, being a LI but restricted to females only :/

And for Vivienne fans, since she's not romanceable at all....

I honestly hoped for no race gates for Cullen, so meh. Also 4 romances for straight (elven) females! That's a shocker. They are truly chosen this time round.

Y'know, maybe both Solas and Cullen are restricted because they were added in late? Less work if you cut out two of the four potential races from their romance-arcs.

Yeah, let's please not turn this into bisexual erasure.

What? I don't follow.

Here's how it breaks down:

Two options:
Straight Male, any race
Gay Male, any race
Gay Female, any race
Straight Female, Dwarf or Qunari

Three Options:
Straight Female, Human

Four Options:
Bisexual Male, Any Race
Bisexual Female, Dwarf or Qunari
Straight Female, Elven

Five Options:
Bisexual Female, Human

Six Options:
Bisexual Female, Elven

I'm just saying, there's no "kick in the teeth of LGBTQ gamers" here, because most of us are on a level playing field. It's quite equitable, for the most part.

Hugs to everybody whose romance plans are messed up by these. :( I hope somebody surprises you in game -- I wasn't attracted to any of the DA2 LIs at all from what I knew beforehand (besides Sebastian, who had the opposite problem of being disappointing in practice), but on my second playthrough I'm learning that Fenris is pretty great.

Curious to hear (in game) what Cullen's reasons are. I wonder if the dwarf thing has to do with the Carta running red lyrium or something like that.

I thought that was the explanation you gave me as to more limited in scope?

I think the only good thing about this news is that Cullen might actually notice I'm an elf.

I'm really sorry Panda. It must be really tough to attach yourself to a character and then learn that you can't have a LI you hoped for.

I'm kind of surprised Cullen's the extra since he ticks most of the "BW leading man" boxes.

My guess is that Solas was restricted to elven females for strong story reasons, but Cullen was for more practical matters (writing, animations, etc).  Did they ever say "strong story reasons" for BOTH gated characters?  I'm looking for a quote, but can only find one for Solas at the moment.

I was thinking along the lines as well. It might save on animating the extremes.

It was, but they didn't give a reason for it, so I figured maybe it was because they didn't have as much time to work on Solas' and Cullen's romance-arcs as they did the others because it was the year extension that upgraded them to an LI status.

Well, bit of a kick in the teeth for LGBTQ gamers really, but an interesting set of options. I had wondered if Cullen was added late after Greg Ellis' VA sessions seemed to be happening at an odd pace. Players who like female elves are having a good time though, imagine what the options would have looked like without Mr Epler's work in IB :o

I don't understand. How is it a kick in the teeth? Yes it is unfortunate, but it is really only a set back, the good news is that he is a romance option at all, everything thing else is just details.

Yea. And it's not like I have half of year planned Skye and planned her around Cullen's romance ^^; I'm so screwed over these restrictions really!

Although many are saying that straight females got it best this game, for me really feels other way around. Male characters don't have any race-gating against them! Only female elves got it good in DAI XD

II was agreeing with you. Saying that there aren't options for LGBT players is offensive to bisexuals.

Two “additional” romance options were added to the game as a result of the extra development time DA:I received. They are more limited in scope, largely for reasons directly related to their story arcs, but are otherwise the equal of the other options:

The only "story" reason I can think of for Cullen being gated against qunari and dwarves is religion.

I would had been annoyed if Cullen was only able to romance humans because he clearly had nothing against elves...at least with one of my elven mages who were a female and teased him.

Btw, I shall post Clair and Zander for that big drawing that is being come up with.

Clair: Clair is quite a quiet and soft-natured young woman, she is not someone who is going to look for the evil or the flaws in people but try to find the good. She is often found reading a book and stutters slightly when she is embarrassed or caught off guard, she also blushes. So she is a truly nice person!

Clair is the one on the left, the one is the middle is my attempt at Solas and the one of the right is my attempt at Cullen.

Zander: Zander is someone who will do anything to get the job done, he does not care how long it takes for him to accomplish something or how many people he hurts in the process. The end result justifies the means, at least that is how Zander sees things. So he is not a jerk but he is someone who will do anything to get the job done.

But the only Elven option is Dalish. Wouldn't she be a heathen too, technically? Can you convert?

True, but I still suspect that Cullen is always going to have a spot for elves regardless of background. Just my way of thinking.

Skye and Auren are characters that I know of the top of my head from this thread. What an irony that both you and Artemis got the short end of the stick after planning them for so long. I still hope that maybe they can be salvaged on the subsequent pts.

Female elves won the Inquisition.

It can't be religion since elves are Dalish and Qunari and dwarves have been raised in Andrastean society. I think it has to be just personal preference.

Hey guys.

R-racegated high-five? No?

But seriously, I'm sorry for everyone who was hoping to romance Cullen with a qunari or dwarf. As a Solas fan, I know that feel.

Personally, I'm just relieved that they've assured us that all the content is equal to the non race-gated LIs. That was a concern of mine.

Yea, but elves have a closer tie to the Chantry in general in society. There may be an option that humans and elves have in regards to the Chantry that dwarves and qunari do not. It's possible that the Chantry would not accept dwarves or qunari as readily. The dwarves are not considered the Maker's children, for example.
