I'm really interested in Cullen's story arc for the game. I;m excited to see how he comes to join the inquisition and how we meet him. Do you think we find him on a recruitment mission for advisors or do you think Cassandra has him all ready for us:) Also, I wonder if Cullen might already remember Leliana from DAO and as Sister Nightingale in DA2

To be honest, though I hoped Cullen would be open to all races, I don't see it as a surprise that he isn't. Given what his opinions on Qunari seem to be... *shrug*  And, though he may have only meant Ohgren in particular, he may find dwarves in general to be heathens; simply for the fact that they have a different social structure from what he's used to. Thus he's put off by them as well. It doesn't have to be a religious thing. I know I have my preferences so... *shrug* I had hoped that since Cullen was so unknown despite how long he's been around, that he would be more open but it's the mark of an individual to have one's quirks which is better than cookie-cut characters. I'm disappointed but not surprised. I DO wonder if the logisitcs of making the game work with 2 extremely different heights is partly to blame for this, though. If Cullen was an add-on, maybe there just wasn't time to adapt the scenes for all makes and models of Inquisitors and sticking to human and slightly-less-than-human heights simplified things. They just happen to fit an established narrative from Cullen's previous appearances? Or maybe the devs really do think it makes story sense. Guess we'll have to play to find out.

Whoa Cullen is the other race gated?  I only intended on romancing him with humans and elves only but sorry for those that wanted a dwarf and qunari romance with him. I just find it strange that both race gated characters are for female LI's. Just as surprised as I was to see both elves were for female characters.

That's silly! Clearly it's because he's a vampire and requires the blood of elven women to fuel his immortality.

I knew it!  I bet he sparkles, too!

Yeah we're not going to agree on this and not to mention I already mentioned the Qunari thing making sense. But whatever I have no desire to run around in circles over something that's going to be answered anyway.

Good thing the devs didn't say there was a story reason for him being straight then isn't it? Only for the race gates. But whatever I'm done arguing this same point. It's tiresome and I feel like my cousin's hamster in that damn wheel.

I've felt like that hamster for a while now, actually.  Hugs!

Wow, if it weren't for the extra year, there would be no Cullen romance  That was such a close call.

He doesn't sparkle, but he might blind you with the glare off his head if he stands out in the sun.

I'm personally devastated by this news. Now I'll have to endure an endless stream of Cullen/Elf fanart. I was hoping Cullen/Qunari and Cullen/Dwarf fan art to soften the blow. Filthy shemlen! Stay away from our women!

I've really been thinking this, too. Considering that Mike Laidlaw pointed out that both Cullen and Solas were the characters added in because they had extra development time, I'm not surprised they're both race gated. It's easy enough to write a few lines of story in as to why one character wouldn't be romantically interested in another. I mean, it's not just writing appropriate dialogue for each scenario, but they have to make each model work together in cut scenes which can require quite a bit of work, even with models of similar size and shape. Given the time they had for development, I'm happy there will be as many love interests and companions as there are. I was honestly not expecting more than a small role or cameo by Cullen for a while there! I don't know about Solas, but for Cullen it may not honestly be more than a, "he was attracted to both Elves and Humans in origins, so let's just leave it at that since we don't really have time to work out the rest."? Even if there is a story comment about the Qunari devastating Kirkwall, or whatever, I don't think it will come up much. It'd be cool if he becomes buddies with my Qunari inquisitor : D

Wow. Big news today. Sad for those who had their hopes dashed!

I'm truly curious about why Cullen's race gating "makes sense" as the devs have continued to assert. There's obviously got to be something more to it than the almost nothing we know so far. I think this is one where we'll just have to wait and see... and hope folks can remain civil in the interim...  =]

I think it does make a teeny bit of sense if you take what Cullen said about Qunari into account and how his past encounters with a dwarf went. However... I don't think those were really all that big indicators or personal romantice preference - certainly not enough to not work around. I'm more inlcined to think it was a logisitcs thing, given time constraints, since Cullen wasn't an "original" DAI romance. Making a Cullen romance work for ALL possible Inquisitors may have just commanded more time and effort than they had so they went with the race restriction and wrote it into the story so it "made sense". But I'm optimistice that way.

I think Cassandra and Leliana will have arranged his presence beforehand. Presumably they had to deal with him in Kirkwall as the next-in-command left after Meredith's death (did he ever formally take on the title of Knight-Commander? it escapes me now...). Cassandra, as a Seeker, probably interrogated Cullen about Hawke and the incidents, not much more nicely than she did Varric. We don't know when exactly Varric's interrogation happens but it seems to be at least a couple years since Hawke disappeared, so that would place it more or less at the time DA:I is beginning - when Cass and Leliana mention "following with the original plan" at the end of DA2, they possibly already have something like the Inquisition in mind, and that's where they might have approached Cullen about it.

I don't know if we'll meet him on the road (maybe in that confrontation from the Frostbite screencap) or be formally introduced at some safe place (thinking about how cute it would be to meet him at camp), but with his background with Cass and Leliana it seems he might already have a designated job in the proto-Inquisition when we come into it.

I still don't really see that as a story reason until they tell me a story reason.

Plus... all the preferences talk is starting to get divisive.

He's the oldest we've gotten thus far. Glad I don't have to feel like a dirty old cougar this round!

As someone said, I believe this time around most of the romance options are "older". I'm not sure how old Sera is supposed to be, or Dorian, though I would place bets that he's not outside thirty (and wow, I remember when I was a little bit younger and I thought thirty was old). Cullen is mid thirties, isn't he? Blackwall is older. And I believe it was stated that Solas is over forty. Cassandra is probably at least as old as Cullen. And the Iron Bull....well, it's hard to guess the ages of qunari :P

Who am I missing? I'm missing someone...

Mostly I'm just drawing a colossal blank because I don't want to romance him with a Circle mage and am drawing a blank on female non-mage humans since we got the background info.

Well I still don't see my Dalish elf wanting anything to do with a human Templar.  But I feel real bad for all those that planned their Quanri mage ladies who were going to romance Cullen.  You have my sympathies!

Yes, it would make sense if Josie, Leliana, and Cullen are all ready a part of the Inquisition when we meet. I am interested in learning about Cullen's background though--I think Mike Laidlaw had a tweet a while back about completing a long quest for Cullen's story arc. Hmm, now that I think about it I guess Cullen might remember Morrigan from Origins as well as the apostate mage that accompanied the Hero of Ferelden.

I'm excited to learn more about Cullen--for all we know he could come from a family of 10 and  have a twin brother--- :D  (just kidding) -I'm excited to see what he is like around his friends---like playing cards with Varric or visiting the tavern or confessing his love to the Inquisitor  --do you think he will be confident and directly go after her or do you think he will be more shy like he was in DA2/DAO.

I wonder with all the planning and waiting if how we really end up playing is unexpected in every way- like I go in and make the perfect character for what I imagine Cullen to want and desire and I end up drawn to Sera or Iron Bull. Or set us up- we fall head over heels in love with the idea of Cullen and he's not at all like we expected. Afraid of the dark. Bad in bed. Can't take a joke.

Of course it will be. We still know very little. For me, that's the exciting part.

And as for Cullen not digging my Inquisitor. Weeellll, that's what metagaming is for. ^_^

I think a lot of people are forgetting about what the Dev's told us before. I believe I am correct when I state that they said we were going to learn the man before he became a templar and more about his reasons/background. So we know little to nothing about Cullen's background so he may have a reason why he would not romance a Qunari or Dwarf. Say...a Qunari murdered his mother, you really think he going to go after a Qunari...not if we are being realistic. So I agree with Muse, we just need to wait.

I admit, the reveals have me scratching my head about rearranging things since I never expected BW. Qunari F!quisitor was not very high on my list but I'd thought about one for Cullen later (just because I sometimes like a taller woman if nothing else). But she might be quite interesting with Blackwall (do female kossith worry about breaking their non-kossith partners too, lol?). I honestly can't see a non-Qun being entirely comfortable with IB. I really want to play Zhenya first, I love dwarves. Ack, I foresee me running one of each race simultaneously, it's the only answer...
