I'm hoping it's a bit of both! Still a bit shy and awkward when you come on too strong (Surana/Amell and Hawke could be a bit... pushy?), still formal enough that he can't say "prostitutes" because it's so inappropriate (or possibly even demeaning to the "young ladies"). But seeing as he's apparently grown bold enough that he can outsass an Antivan now, I expect he'll have some more attitude approaching this romance, more confidence in himself that he can be the man the Inquisitor sees in him.

Afraid of the dark can be fixed by sleeping warm against his Quizzie's bosom. (ask Zevran ) Bad in bed can be fixed with practice. Lots and lots of practice. In the Inquisitor's tower. In his tower. On the floor. In the kitches. On the dragon skull throne. On the war table. Everywhere. Can't take a joke would make him even more adorable, I'd probably gang up with Vivienne and Dorian to mock the hell out of him. Out of love. Of course. The news that he wasn't one of the original planned romances is making me hope even harder that this is not the case (I have no idea why, but as of right now it ranks just below Cullen / one of Hawke's siblings on the NOTP list for me). Can you imagine if the game had come out with a setup where we couldn't get with him* but Cassandra could?! Blargh! 

 

*EDIT: no matter what class/gender we played... which brings up another reason I'd rather the gated romances didn't have NPC hookups when not romanced...

Just wanted to add my support and sympathy. We've been getting a bit of folks like that in the Solas thread as well in regards to Solas only going for female elves.
 
Got quite a bit of racist/bigot/where's-your-open-mindedness-now sort of garbage. Mostly calmed down now, but after the initial announcement, it was rather rough.
 
I find it a bit mind-blowing, really, because people in real life are allowed to have preferences or natural likes/dislikes for romance. Why do we hold these characters to different standards?

True. We won't see a story reason until we play it. I just think it's a coincidence of sorts that Cullen was an add-on and he's gated. We won't know Cullen's reasoning until later. I've missed most of the talk. I just had a chance to check in and shared my thoughts since it was the subject going on at the time. But I must have missed the kerfluffle.

I would like to add my condolences to those who had their hope dashed from Cullen being race-gated. Disappointment sucks. But I also heard about the attacks the devs been getting, and that makes my gamer heart sad.

 

At this point in development, I just want the game in my hands because I need a good solid reason to avoid my relatives during Thanksgiving and Christmas, LOL XD

Wow, I'm amazed that Viv isn't a LI.  I mean now I know, all you have to do is take one look at her to see she is WAY too good for our greasy Quizzys!  Even by the endgame when we are absolute Inquistrix dictators Vivianne would still be out of our league.  Actually, I'm sort of pleased to see that such an awesome and beautiful character isn't a romance option because she'll never be anyone's arm-candy but I'm sad for those who wanted to romance her because disappointment sucks!

 

I wonder if Cullen's story romance restriction is based on the Qunari and Dwarven backgrounds being a bit dodgy.  He seems like a pretty stand up, righteous character and mercenary and criminal backgrounds might be a  deal breaker for him?  If it's because he's attracted to our Quizzy because she reminds him of the Warden, I'm going to pee myself laughing - way to break the mood, Cullen!

 

I'm pleased that Blackwall is a LI, although can't you just see the tragedy waiting to happen there.  Also, how's Artemis?  I hope she's not too brokenhearted.

Me either. Cullen can respect and like Qunari and Dwarves without being sexually attracted to them.  And at this point, we are not even sure of the reasoning behind the restrictions...so maybe we should wait and see what it is before we start throwing labels around.

Yeah, I think you should probably rethink your little jibe - some terms shouldn't be bandied around so casually what with real world groups having done some terrible things to actual people.  It's a little inappropriate.

Sure it could just be preference but I'm curious as to the why. He might not want to be with a Qunari because he believes that they are all heathens and cannot get past their religious differences or go so far as to hate them because of DA2. I'm really excited to see what happens.

Honestly I'm just interested. I mean there is a possibility of him being so and I think avoiding a polite discussion about it is unhealthy. Though there are a lot of hurt feelings at the possibility, it's useless to ignore a POSSIBLE aspect of him. Though that kind of discussion could go downhill lol. Hasn't stopped anyone before. Remember how stupid the mages vs Templar debate got? People take too many things personally... ANYWAY.

It is a very interesting facet of Cullen to discuss but maybe it should wait until there's actually something to discuss? All we have to go on is what Cullen previously said. Which doesn't seem like enough to draw any conclusions from so labels like "racist" are a bit premature, I think.

Okay, I was joking a bit with that to ease the tension but sure, let me rephrase.

Rephrased: Exactly! I mean, I don't like to engage in sexual intercourse with my Qunari/dwarven friends. Does that mean I dislike all Qunari and/or Dwarves? No, it doesn't. I have cool friends.

I'm not trying to say they're irrelevant or in any way less important than other characters. I'm simply saying that in regards to Cullen not romancing those races, it does not make him a racist. Like I said in my previous post, not everyone wants to bang every person they come across yet this seems to be the standard some people carry and therefore call Cullen a racist. I mean, I could say, maybe a Dwarven/Qunari female could come along that he falls head over heels for, and that would be awesome, but he's not a real person and his role in the game is imagined by someone else. Im surprised I haven't read about people calling him a homophobe, seeing as how he engages females only in a sexual way. I'm straight but does that mean I hate others who aren't straight? Heck no! I love all human beings. I'm sorry if I offended you with my sarcasm. It's hard to convey certain emotion through text. Thankfully, most of my fellow Cullenites know me and my humor by now, but I honestly didn't mean any offense by that post.

srsly, tho, having sexual preferences and being a racist are two very diff things. having a preference usually doesn't involve lynching ppl, burning them alive then taking pictures in front of their charred, dead, hanging bodies--smiling-- like a bunch of demonic ghouls.

It's just from what choice words he's had in the past. Calling Oghren, "an ignorant cave dwelling heathen" after Oghren was being quite sympathetic. Though Oghren took it rather well, I remember being really surprised. From what we've seen he has stuff against people of different religions. Can our dwarf or Qunari be Andrastians?why can't he be interested if so? People have suggested it in the past. Yes, could just be preference. Juuuuuust saying. It's not that premature because like KC said we've seen him being a hater.

Though, actually! It stems from him seeing them as heathens rather than their race. So he may be a... Bigot? Is that the term? I'm interested to see if we can change his mind or if he has changed his mind since 2.

Iunno. The possibility is interesting. Though we like to see the best in the companions, there is that possibility and I personally find it an interesting aspect of him.
