@Pierce Miller, Not arguing about that, Cullen has served the order long enough to definitely be on the official dose. Just about the weird idea that we have no lyrium...I don't see Cullen as one of the Templar who gave into the addiction and chased more than the official dose...he has already shown himself to have very strong willpower.

Alistair not needing lyrium may be down to dragon blood, or elf mage mother (what a retcon his history has had!), not just his not being a full Templar.

It has some interesting story ideas, and the lyrium dose is most certainly going to be mentioned when we talk about the Red Templar and the fact that red lyrium has driven them bonzo. I just don't see this as a major part of Cullens story arc that's all.

...and the further retcon that apparently Alistair's back on the stuff in the comics in order to use his templar abilities again...

Fraternization.

I really understand where people are coming from on this...and yes FemShep was creepy as hell...or I should say that her writers lost the plot....I still shudder at some of the lines when I play.

So here is my take on the whole thing from a different angle. We were told that we are the leader of the Inquisition, but we are a leader of leaders. Taking this further think of a Celtic high chieftain with clan chieftains under her. In the medieval world it would be taken for granted that she would seek companionship. However such companionship could only come from equals. We are not fraternizing with Cullen or anyone else, they are equals, who have deferred to us. There is a difference.

Historically it was not uncommon for Queens to marry their generals/ war chiefs. That's my insane reasoning anyway....totally different from the Vega thing.....shudder.

Now I'm wondering if Cullen might work with a glib charmer of a human mage. Slightly shady in that she has connections she used to keep herself supplied while on the run but also uses them for Cullen because "whatever we were before, we're now the Inquisition."

Yeah, the Vega thing was cringeworthy at best, thankfully I never played it, only watched on net, I don't think i could have looked at my femshep after she'd acted like that......I always loved Citadel with romanced Garrus and Zaeed planning the security for the apartment, Zaeed was absolutely awesome in that DLC :)

I agree about the equals bit, I can't wait to see it play out in game.

I really hope he is written in a way that makes many people re-evaluate him, to see him as more than a mage-killing, ex-templar :). I'm not expecting everyone to agree with him or all of a sudden go mush for him but it would be great if he could earn a little respect and appreciation as a character.

If that's true it is interesting to see we will get Solas so early in the game.  Our first mage I guess.

I don't think we can place too much stock in concept art because that's all it really is, a concept. Chances are the artist just threw in any companion or character just to create the image.

Sheesh, I hope not. I had to save and quit the CE origin story and go back to it weeks later the first time I tried playing it (though there was nothing semi or date about that one).

Cullen started out under Greagor who appears to be on the late side of middle age and completely in control of all his faculties (as much as I wanted to slap him at the end of the origin story when I'd only followed Irving's orders). Greagor was Knight-Commander, so he was obviously a fairly powerful templar as well. So there's no reason to think Cullen shouldn't have another 20 or 30 years before the lyrium addling becomes a problem. We'll have to have access to lyrium if we want templars in our forces, which may be how we end up with Varric.

BTW, I will admit here that I have never played DA2 for several reason, though I've watched videos enough to be familiar with most of it, so do they actually say in there that Templars can't fraternize within the order? There's a big difference between two prison guards fraternizing and a prison guard and prisoner (mage) fraternizing. It was only the Templar-mage fraternization that I was aware was forbidden.

don't read it, move along, i'll just write down my feelings and it's not even worth mentioning or reading ;u; (see? i even use smaller font size for this)

the ultimate reason why i love cullen thread and cullenites as well... you come up with the best ideas ever! for cullen or other characters... many of them, i'd like to see in game, some i have adopted for my headcanons. i'm sure that my first game experience will be better, because of all the ideas you've planted in my mind.

i'm quite teary for the last few days, because i started crying again (pms? but it's too early xd), just thinking of cullen, of his backstory, of exploring it with my quizzie, giving him love he deserves. i cry when i think of his new, frostbite model, and greg ellis's voice (these are silly reasons to cry) ;u;

someone want to cry with me? i don't wanna be the only wimp here ;p

Gender flipping is a very useful tool. If they had done that scene with a Male Shepard and a woman... Ooh, the fallout.

If it was only the concept, I'll agree. But with his interview and the Gamescon trailer together with the concept (plus, we know we'll get Vivienne later, and I think we'll get Dorian at the start of the venatori plot) i do think Solas will be the first mage we'll get, as Varric and Cass will be the first rogue and warrior. So my opinion (I could be wrong, of course) is that Solas will be with us when we go to skyho the first time.
Plus, the concept shows a event that does happen in the game in some fashion, and Cass is there as well. And the fact that Solas wasn't a LI at first might mean he was written as a mentor figure at first.

I suspect that was the point, a reminder that it DOES work both ways. They don't seem to be afraid of exploring hot topics.

Don't worry, I bubble and wibble over loads of things too. I like to think that it's because I'm sensitive NOT a wimp  I've always been like that, I cry over games, ME3 had me a literal wreck on more than one occasion, I've cried over many fanfics, I can't watch any movies remotely sad or even happy sad, I can't watch any nature docs. Our upcoming independance vote has me in tears on almost a daily basis.

It's better out than in I say, bottling emotion is rarely a good plan :)

We'll designate the corner over there as the *wibble* corner

See I might just be a pessimistic person but I took it as a middle finger to the fandom.  Same way in the expanded ending they gave us the refusal option but it just led to defeat.  It was like Bioware was thinking "Keep bitching about wanting to romance Vega?  Ok here is a creepy gross romance for you.  Oh you didn't like our ending?  Thought you should be able to tell the star brat to go f himself?  Ok here you go this is why that was the WRONG choice"

But admittedly I might still be a bit bitter at how crappy ME3's story was....

Shepard has always been a lawsuit waiting to happen. Hitting on your subordinates really isn't ok.

I agree that Vega's "romance" is creepy, though. Imo they shouldn't have included it.

About the lyrium addiction, I don't have a problem with Cullen being addicted to lyrium (if he is). He'll be in good company with Cass, my DA:O mage and my DA:I mage. I just hope that they'll tell us if he's addicted or if he's not, how he avoided becoming addicted or how he managed to quit.

My concern with Cullen as a character has less to do with a potential lyrium addiction and more to do with how unlikeable I've found him in both previous games. I don't have an issue with him being in Inquisition as he does seem to make sense from a story perspective, but I have a feeling I'll be less than cordial. My character is going to be very much about freedom and I don't think him and a bigot--like Cullen--will get along very well.

I think all templars exhibit the withdrawal symptoms if they don't get their regular dose, so yes, Cullen's an addict. Really, being a templar and a Warden are quite similar. The role is necessary, and there's a horrible, inescapable cost. It's not a matter of if you'll lose yourself but when.

I wouldn't really call Cullen a bigot. Granted, he has had some extreme and bigoted views in the past, but in his current incarnation, I don't think anything could be further from the truth.
Here's a FAQ you can read. :)
