I'd honestly say that you should try a mage. I feel like that being a mage with this specific game plot, the Veil and the Fade, will be a lot richer because your character is so uniquely tied to the lore surrounding these issues, much more so than a warrior or rogue could be.

That's exactly why I want to play a mage so badly, even if it breaks my tradition of being a rogue first. Ah, well, looks like I'll just have to make an exception for DA:I!

The spoils are going to the local police department and Bioware.  #Fuel for the things I care about   (I know that doesn't work, but there you go!)

I love baking so much, and I just finished up 5 jars of apple butter, and 5 more tomorrow.  Yay delicious smells.  Om nom nom!

I've been playing around with the Inquisitor section of the site. Are elf arms supposed to look like that?

Personally, I don't see why the main storyline should be more intrinsically tied to a mage Inquisitor than anyone else. Your Tear-closing powers are not magic, and even qunari (who don't give a second thought to the Fade) and dwarves (who don't have access to it at all) can be the hero that saves Thedas from whatever the Elder One is trying to do. If that was the case, other classes wouldn't be needed, and dwarves shouldn't even be available.

In any case, I wouldn't say that mages will get the best out of the story yet, before we actually get the game. They already skewed the game too much in favor of mage players in DA2 and were called out pretty heavily for it; hopefully this time they'll have balanced the storyline elements to be more fair and equally rich and depthful for all players.

I've been trying not to make mine complete self-inserts. Some may have a bit of my traits and beliefs, but that's it.

I love cooking lol.  I've been told I'm very very weird, but it's extremely relaxing to me, to just bake.  When I'm doing cookies I wind up with anywhere between 500 and 2000 on a weekend.  Then I find places around the county (like the volunteer fire depts, the police stations, etc) or my family/friends, and send em off.  I only keep maybe a dozen or so.  And then my mood is greatly improved for a couple of months.  Its a lot of fun to me :)

And in honor of Cullen, I am going to be making shortbread tomorrow.  I was going to use the recipe that someone (but I can't remember right now grrr) submitted for the Cullen celebration.

And in the meanwhile, I am finishing off a Dalish elf playthrough of Origins/Awakenings with Alistair being my honey pot who stays in the grey wardens.  She's been my most pragmatic character to date, although not completely heartless.  It's been quite fun to play her.  My final playthrough will be quite ruthless, and I can finally hopefully maybe get the achievement for defiling the ashes, as I should have gotten it once, but didnt.  Not sure if I did something wrong there.

I'm sorry, but what? I'd say the green glowy thing on your hand is more than likely magic. What else would you call it? Considering that the main story revolves around the Fade and the Veil, I was just saying that your mage Inquisitor would be closer to that kind of stuff lorewise as opposed to a rogue or warrior.

I said I was swearing off BSN after getting forum burnout post ME3.  But then DA:I gets announced, I start lurking, and you guys are such a wonderful bunch of warm fuzzies that I can't resist  :D

I'm just ridiculously excited for this game.  Combat, aesthetics, story, romances...everything I hear makes me happier.  I don't think I've felt this giddy over a game since the run-up to DA:O.

That's exactly why I want to play a mage so badly, even if it breaks my tradition of being a rogue first. Ah, well, looks like I'll just have to make an exception for DA:I!

I'm doing the opposite, actually.  After playing mage first in both DA:O and DA2, I'm playing a Dalish rogue first.  I wanted to start off with a character who was more of a blank slate when it came to the politics of Thedas at large, since my Hawke and Warden were both rather opinionated and very pro-mage.  My Dalish rogue starts off not knowing that much about mages, templars, Celene, Gaspard, or any of it.

On topic for Cullen: I'll have to be honest, he kind of freaked me out in DA:O.  My Amell mage enjoyed picking on him during the origin story because she's kind of a brat, and that became a really nasty case of Funny Aneurysm Moment during Broken Circle.  So as a player, I definitely felt sympathy for him, but tended give him the side-eye  :P

I gained massive respect for Cullen about halfway through my mage Hawke playthrough.  She was awful to him and all the templars--confrontational and almost childishly belligerent.  He never took her bait, never expressed anything other than courtesy and professionalism.  By the end of DA2, he was a really nice bastion of sanity for me as a player, since even my Hawke had drunk the crazy Anders Kool-Aid by that point.  I really came to like him in my more moderate warrior Hawke playthrough, where it felt like Cullen, Hawke, and Aveline were the only people holding it all together by the end.

He's also scruffy and blonde and GORGEOUS in DA:I.  I have trouble resisting scruffy blondes (see also: Anders and Alistair).  I'm pretty stoked for all the LIs, though, so if Cullen doesn't wind up with my first Inquisitor, I'll definitely make one just for him.

I'd say the green glowy thing on your hand is more than likely magic. What else would you call it?

I don't know what I'd call it but it can't be pure magic as we know it, drawing power from the Fade, or dwarven Inquisitors could not have it. It's obviously magical but it's not magic, you know what I mean? Anyway, we'll see how they explain it in game.

Aah, my best ruthless playthrough was with my Dalish Elf. Losing Tamlen, then being forced out of the clan that was the only world he'd ever known, then thrown into this world dominated by shems calling him knife-ear and trying to impose their Maker on him... he was just really angry and bitter about everything and could not spare a single sh!t about anyone else's feelings. It was a pretty evil playthrough, I guess, that I wouldn't have normally done if not for the achievement OCD, but it was also... cathartic, in a lot of ways. Specially once I reached the end of the game and decided he was just done, too tired of everything to care anymore, and would rather just die already. All my other Ultimate Sacrifices had been noble, heroic, selfless sacrifices for the greater good; Mahariel's was outright suicide. It really messed me up, but also taught me things about roleplaying that I hadn't learned even in like 15 years of Dungeons & Dragons. Like Lola mentioned a few posts back, doing things you normally wouldn't choose to do can make you discover weird things about yourself that you never even knew were there.

Best of luck in your ruthless playthrough! Stay strong, the temptation to give up and be nice just this one time can be  overwhelming. ;)

My ruthless playthrough is going to be a blood mage.  I'm pretty excited about trying it out, and seeing where it can go.  Even having played Origins 14ish times, I still don;t know all the dialogue options.

I also can not wait to see how my personality fares in Inquisition.  I get the feeling that my first playthrough (I make my names, and races and pick a desired love interest that I'm going to pursue, but after that I just play), is going to be quite interesting, because of how diplomatic I am.  I'm not necessarily NICE, but I am diplomatic and to the point.  I'm very amped to see what BW has for us.  November cannot come soon enough!

You know, part of me was thinking Solas reminded me of someone! I guess we now we know why he named himself after the Elven word for "Pride". If my real name was Dobby, I'd have changed it to the first thing I could think of, pronto!

Speaking of flawed characters, I remember the scene that made me truly realize my Hawke really was a blunt, aggressive type.  The entire scene was flawless, just a smooth articulation of a personality type I'd almost never played in a Bioware game, nailed it so perfectly that I had to make my canon THAT personality.  Because Hawke isn't going to bribe when he can threaten:

I've threatened that guy with a sarcastic Hawke and he doesn't bat an eye.

Speaking of characters, one of my favorite parts is actually emphasizing upon their flaws.

I'm also a masochist, so a lot of my characters usually end up in extremely mentally and emotionally challenging situations at some point or another. I like to see how each of them would deal with said situation and what they emerge as after the fact.

My Hawke's suprisingly are more goodies than my Wardens. Maybe one reason is that when I got DAO that warden business sounded boring to me so I tried everything to not to go with Duncan. Then I realised that you must be a warden and I developed quite dislike towards Wardens and Duncans for it XD Lol, probaply not right way to play DAO!

I have blue Hawke (my blood mage Niall), purple Hawke (my archer Ania) and red Hawke (my assassin Kayla). Niall was very self-sacrificing so it was his flaw too.. he also blamed himself too much over things. I think that he chose to go with templars in the end cause he was just so tired (he had lost his family earlier and couldn't stop Qunaris from slaughtering people etc which he blamed himself) so he just did simple math: templar ending saves more people instead of being noble.

Ania's fault would be that she doesn't take anything seriously and hides behind jokes. She kinda sweeps problems away with jokes as well like in her relationship with Anders, she refused to see that anything was wrong with him. I guess it's defense-mechanism for her.

Kayla in other hand is more egoistical and cares mostly about people close to her: family and friends. So she didn't want to get involved in people's problems if it wasn't people close to her or profit. Still, she was quite blunt towards Aveline and Varric both and got even Aveline to punch her face (I was so suprised, that hadn't happened before!).

I enjoy planning my characters in advance. It helps me feel more invested in their stories and in the worlds they inhabit. It's a fun process for me, and that's why I do it.

If you plan a lot in advance, though, you have to be willing to be flexible about changing things and/or headcanoning things that don't line up perfectly. That's something I'm fine with, personally.

None of my characters are me. They are just characters. I don't tend to go for self-inserts. That said, all of my main game characters have qualities that I find positive, likable, and admirable, because I prefer playing heroic stories in my games and I find I don't have fun playing characters that morally repel me. So yeah, my characters are generally what I consider decent people, but they aren't myself.

I'm not sure how much you know already but Blackwall is a female romance, Solas's is only for female elves, and Skyhold customizations.

Also that Cullen is race gated to female humans and elves

I haven't read over my inbox properly yet Asperath but I'm just now checking out the thread Laidlaw made on the romances. She is finally starting to make a recovery, thanks. She has always been susceptible to getting croup when she has a bad cough and was a bit harder for her to shake this time. Hopefully she will grow out of getting as she gets older like her brother did.

Yeah I realised that you wouldn't have time to read it after I posted lol

Croup is horrible, I'm glad she's getting better :)

EDIT: Btw Lola checked with ML and he told her that Solas and Cullen were only  "...more limited in scope" due to their race gating.
