Pretty torturous, if you ask me. Makes you wonder what they did to "pass the time".

Got through a lot of tissues, I would imagine!

Hmm I wonder if he'll actually discuss what he was subjected to in DAI or he'll only refer to it vaguely in DAI (or if at all)

EDIT: -

Love this by http://froschkuss.tumblr.com/

For life of me I can't get pics to show or upload from my pc <_<

/begin hopefully not annoying advice

Um, just in case, you can't upload them directly from your computer to BSN...  you can only repost them from where they're already online somewhere. So in this case, you need to right click on the image itself from that tumblr page and get the direct URL to image (ending in jpg/png/gif/whatever, so click Copy Image URL or open image in new tab or drag the image to a new tab and copy the URL). Then put that direct URL between img tags, but without the spaces:  [ img ] http: //blah blah.png [ /img]

/end possibly overhelpful advice

Thinking about the idea that Cullen wasn't able to get any comfort from anyone (be it sexual, romantic, or just a friendly ear/hug) is actually kinda sad... especially if he wasn't able/couldn't bring himself to find any in DA2 either. Poor thing. Not a problem though, my Inquisitor will make up for lost time!

Yes, it does make you wonder about life in an isolated tower like Kinloch Hold, which potentially would be worse than even the Gallows in that there's no  nearby town or village with other people with which to interact. It's one of the reasons why I could imagine Cullen still seeking out some kind of companionship in Kirkwall, even if it's mostly platonic. Someone who would just listen to him and support him who is outside the Templar chain of command.

That's probably another reason why he let his recruits visit the brothel, wouldn't want them put in the same sort of situation he was... at least if they're getting it there, they won't seek it from the mages or each other.

That's also why I wondered if Varric's book Aveline spoke of in the Legacy DLC had some truth to it. Obviously, Cullen wasn't having a fling with her, but he may have been seeing someone in the guard for a little while.

Especially once the chantry was gone. Before that, I could imagine he might have spent time talking to priests there, though I have to wonder if he'd ever have discussed what happened at Kinloch Hold with them.

I always imagined Cullen would stave off the lonely feels by keeping busy. The rare down times he could be found playing cards with the others in the barracks... in Kirkwall anyway. I agree that being stuck out in the middle of a lake is certainly not conducive for an active social life, even if he had been allowed to do as he pleased. Seeing the same 40 faces day in / day out would drive me crazy - knowing that there was little chance for variation in people or routine. Ugh! I'm getting claustrophobic just thinking about it.

Interesting point. And someone in the guard wouldn't have been forbidden (could even have been a Fereldan refugee in the guard, like Aveline was).

Agreed. Plus in regards to the "one thing he wanted but could never have" I think it likely went beyond just referring to Amell/Surana. We need to remember that Templars are generally discouraged from seeking out romantic relationships (although not forbidden), and since they aren't allowed to romance mages or fellow templars and Kinloch Hold was miles away in the middle of a lake away from any town, city, or brothel, for a Templar such as himself to seek out comfort elsewhere would be near impossible, it's really no wonder the demons used something like that against him, it just happened to take on the form of Amell/Surana since that was who he was crushing on at the time.

I dunno. Remember that Wynne's reaction to the Warden being alive is shock, apparently having thought that they'd all died during the Battle of Ostagar. Since we know that Wynne, Uldred and the other survivors spread the news of the battle and Loghain's to the rest of the Circle, it would have far more torturous for Cullen if the Warden was Amell/Surana, since in that reality he'd be under the impression that the woman he'd crushed on had escaped Tranquility, Aeonar and Uldred's coup, only to have been killed by betrayal and Darkspawn.

Good point! I'd never thought of that when she reappeared during Broken Circle. It makes me wonder if he continued believing she was a demon-temptation since he asks why she returned, but never says, "you're alive!"

To me is seems that Cullen was definitely tortured with his desire for female Mage wardens in DA:O, but that line R2 mentioned about him thinking any warden is still an illusion I would guess means he just didn't trust that some strangers would wander in to ever rescue him.

Cullen def had the hots bigtime for lady!Amell/Surana, and I bet the writers will service the fans by having him mention that he greatly admired her. But the game shoehorns you into rejecting him, it's clear that we weren't meant to assume they had a lasting relationship (or even an existing one at all, really).

The whole thing was so cute and gave me my first shot of feels for Cullen, but I'm ready to move on to my new protagonist and an actual requited relationship with the guy. It's been 15+ years or so since Origins, I'm sure he's been well prepared to let that ship sail and I'm just excited to see what happens when it does. :D

No looking back, Ser Cullen. You'll forget that lady ever crossed your path when you see what's coming!! XD

I could picture Guardsman Brennan and Cullen being a cute couple, although since Aveline mentions in MotA that Brennan spent several hours spouting love poetry to Corff the Bartender, she might be too busy crushing on him to notice the good Knight-Captain?

My warden never met Cullen before the circle quest because I never played a mage until much later (my main is a rogue). But I've seen the interactions before and I always sort of thought it was a bit like a high school crush- a little one-sided but I don't think I'd go so far as to say tortured. I think he knew it was wrong and always felt kind of naughty about it? I agree with Meanieweenie that he'd just stay extra busy to stave off loneliness.

I think it would be totally awesome if outside of "work" he's a totally different person now. Drinks heavily, sleeps around, a bit of a player. Not at all what we expect.

I never got that it was Amell / Surana specific. The "one thing I could never have" comment I took as much more general, like Lola had said earlier.

... You've totally missed the point I was trying to make, lol.

I didn't say he wasn't referring to Amell/Surana in that scene, I said that she likely wasn't his or the demon's sole motivation for using his feelings as a torture device. There was a lot more behind that piece of dialogue than: "wah-wah, I can't have Amell/Surana, but I wanted her anyway and now I'm being punished".

She does?? I never heard that! LOL Is the implication that she's into Corff, or that she's getting his input for another love interest??

I think headcanon is great and so much fun. It's the idea that Cullen should still be in love with her that baffles.

He's a romance option in DA:I! Obviously the writers intend to show that he's well prepared to replace her.. I've wanted to get my hands on that boy since the heartbreaking day I was forced to reject him -- now I finally have the chance and I am not looking back! XD

It would definitely be an interesting conversation. You gain so much from hindsight and seeing how your lives have diverged since then. Like running into someone from highschool who went on to do interesting things in their career.

No no, I don't believe he should still be in love with her! I just think it would be nice for the two to meet up and catch up, talk about their loved ones, anything to catch up on lost times. As friends. I always saw my lady Amell being friends with him, so I just think they would catch up and even joke about the other's love interest...if Cullen likes to joke some at this point. :P

I'd laugh, but my Inquisitor would stay well clear of a romance with him... well, she might consider shagging him once for something to do, but beyond that she'd not get involved.

I think the way I interpreted Cullen, he'd be embarrassed of his childish crush to his grave and seeing anyone who reminded him of his torture and the person he was shortly afterward would bring him a lot of pain.

I imagine him a lot like Harry Potter with regards to Snape. You're glad the portrait is there but you don't necessarily ever want to go see it again XD

(I totally respect your interpretation, though! This is just a description of mine)

I know, right! Hell, Alistair was more than enough for my Amell. Seriously, no pixel man has come close to beating his romance arc yet! My Inquisitor, however, is more than ready for Cullen. While I doubt his romance arc will be as good as Alistair's (especially since just an advisor), I'm hoping that it'll get me squeeing enough to have him end up as my canon romance for my final ultimate DAI playthrough and Inquisitor.
