Yeah, they said not to take any of it as gospel since there wasn't any context to any of it.. and to definitely not jump to conclusions. Although we did see a (presumably our) hand reach out and nearly touch Glowy Lady, we don't know if that happened during the Breach or even if that was later in the game in a dream. Glowy Lady could be Andraste, or even the Divine who lingered long enough to wave to us after being blown to bits. We just don't know.

Heck, we didn't even see if they actually touched the lady in question. Maybe just entering and leaving the Fade was enough to give us the gloy green hand. The Inquisitor could have been hallucinating the whole thing and their reaching out could just have been them closing a tear without realising it. Notice how it's done in the demo. It's the same pose.

Closing tears in our sleep... I like it!

and it's mentioned repeatedly in DAO that mages aren't forbidden to marry non-mages

Wha?

Where did you get that from? I only remember Wynne talking about that, and all she said suggest otherwise. She said "what kind of man would marry a mage" and "those unions are not encouraged" when talking about mage/mage marriage.

Alistair does say that it's not forbidden.  The thing is, it's technically not forbidden. Most people would not want to put up with the stigma of being married to a mage. And the Chantry might just refuse to perform a marriage ceremony for two mages.

The conversaton went something like this:

Alistair: Mages aren't forbidden to marry.

Wynne: Who would marry a mage?

Alistair: What about another mage?

Wynne: Those sorts of unions are not encouraged.

Even still though, it's not like they'd let you leave the tower to live with your spouse.

That's why I emphasized 'technically'.

Well, techically marriage or union between an elf and a human is also not forbidden, but the consequences are horrible.

The same goes with mages. What happened to Amells is a good example of that.

Given that 99% of humans are andrastians and the chantry repeat every day that magic is a curse and a mark of Maker's hatred... Yeah, it's not forbidden but tricky as hell. Not to mention that mages can't leave the circle, so they can't in fact marry non-mages. Well, in general. Ferelden is a special place in that case.

Also, "frowned upon" is almost as bad as "forbidden" if we're talking about some religious society.

Lol, Tevinter probably wouldn't accept a White Chantry mage who was walking around with such a high powered spirit, especially once Justice had become vengeance. They'd either kill him on sight or not even let him in.

I just picture them all hitting the floor as he rings the bell:

"SHHHHHH!!! Pretend we're not home so he'll go away!"

Besides the Alistair-Wynne conversation, you can also find that out if you flirt with Bann Teagan in the Redcliffe Chantry. When you ask if he has family, he asks if you're married in return. You can respond with "I'm a mage," and he says that mages aren't forbidden to marry.

Never did that, never knew.

Still, they're both out of touch with reality.

Not entirely. It isn't forbidden, just d****d unlikely. But I think my original point was that the fact people know mages aren't forbidden to marry suggests that mages have become more and more confined and restricted over time, and that marriage wasn't quite so unthinkable in the recent past.

I wonder if you can look at it in this way: at the beginning, to have the mages in the Circle and guarded by templars was a noble thing for the people and mages, and they weren't that restrictive. But as time passed on and new people took over, they changed things around and now we have the Circles we see in the game.

Exactly! And people outside the Chantry-Templar-Circle haven't entirely realized some of the unofficial changes that took place. Why would they, except in places like Kirkwall where it's hard to avoid? Out of sight, out of mind.

Again, I have to remind you folks it was Ferelden. This place is pretty nice to mages. No wonder Malcolm escaped to Ferelden and lived there. That says something - that he had to leave both the circle and Kirkwall. But even so, it's not like he could freely say he's a mage and so are his children. It's not impossible, but many things are possible and yet very freaking rare. And they still will have to hide that from majority of people.

I've assumed the secrecy was in order to keep his children from being taken away by the Chantry. Being allowed to marry is separate from the Chantry's claim on mages' children, which appears to have been longer-standing.

Well, most of the people marry for that reason also. I see no logic in allowing marriages and closing their eyes to the fact there will be children. And some, if not most of them, will be mages.

That's just a poor planing all the way.

The children are taken away at birth if one parent is known to be a mage which gives the Hawke family a separate reason from local treatment of mages for fleeing to Fereldan and hiding the fact he's a mage. Which, yes, knowing all children would be taken away would always have been a huge dis-incentive to marrying a mage. I don't recall that I ever said that marriage by mages was common or easy, just that there were signs of growing restrictions on mages over time. I felt the fact that Alistair and Teagan knew it was possible, but didn't seem aware that current treatment of mages made it almost impossible in a practical sense, indicates that the situation has become more restrictive over time.

Super speed, activated by flirting.

There's some Alistair fans here, right? I thought this was pretty funny.

I felt the fact that Alistair and Teagan knew it was possible

Alistair didn't know, though he should have. He asked Wynne.

And the answer mage Warden gave Teagan suggests that Teagan was just ignorant. Like, for the Warden it was obvious. "You're married" - "I'm a mage". I.e. "nuff said".

Not true enough.

They're taken away to separate them from their families. It's not about the child being a mage (because he still can be a mundane person) it's about not to let a circle mages fell like they're human beings with rigths. They should be alone, cut out from the rest of their families be it parents, children or siblings.

That's why they can't have families or even long-term relationship.

Somehow, I don't think we're having the same conversation, or listened to the same conversations in game, so...

Cullen's superpower is a much more productive question right now :D. I think super speed activated by flirting works for the DAO Cullen, but maybe that's evolved by DAI? How about blushing followed by a fast comeback?

Given the speed at which the thread has been coming lately, we'll be at page 3000 in no time! To the people are who writing fic and drawing art just for 3000, how are you all doing? :S I've got a vague plan for a short fic, but I haven't even started writing it.

Ha,ha. Nope. I finished my outline. I doubt it that I will fiish the story I time so I'll probably aim for the 4000 pages celebration :).
