Need some advice:

Do you consider the existence of a female mage Warden to enhance or detract from the future romance. Creating my world states. (game, not Keep)

I personally think it would enhance a romance. Cullen has spent nearly all his life around mages and having feelings for one...maybe he'll feel he is destined to love a mage. My headcanon thinks so any way :)

I consider my female human rogue playthrough to be my "canon."  I actually don't want Cullen's feelings for the mage warden to be an issue, so I think I'm sticking with Cousland. At least for my first run.  ;) I'll probably romance Cullen way more than once.

I think it took about a year playing DAO before I gave Alistair a rest lol

Hey guys do you think I should have Merrill destroy the Eluvian? I want to have the "perfect" Playthrough that will not like make DA:I be horrible with the choices I made, at least for the state I am planning. I didn't let Varric keep the red lyruim shard...so I think I am going in the "right" direction?

Tell me about it. Alistair is almost irresistible.  I'll be determined that I'm going to NOT FALL FOR HIM, and boom, there it is.  It happens early for me, before the proper flirting even starts, when he says he'd dance in a dress for my amusement.  I just....idk.  I can't help myself.  I have a feeling that Cullen will be the same way for me, most likely for different reasons but with the same result...I'll just be putty.   ^_^

Sigh...I think that in all honesty, it's better to blow up the mirror. Cause those mirrors were shut down for a reason, and I am very scared of what they can unleash. That being said, I myself always let Merrill keep it.

Merrill fixing the Eluvian has been referred to as a bad call by a dev.

I think it's really difficult at this point to say what will give you the desired optimum outcome (re: past choices made) given that we don't yet know what DA:I is going to throw our way. Something that seems like a good idea (fem!Warden or destroying the eluvian) could turn around and bite you in the butt regardless.

I usually do as well but I've also destroyed it. What happens if it turns out we need it? Like it's the only way into an impenetrable fortress. Or what if we keep it and it dumps an extra troop of demons on us during dinner?

You see after reading The Masked Empire again...I am debating the whole thing with Merrill and the Eluvian. On one hand I think that maybe if you are a Dalish Inquisitor it may come into play in a good way, since it seems we will be using them in DA:I. But then again I can see how that it can just screw up everything which is why I did not let Varric keep the shard...so on one hand I see where it could be good but then on the other hand the Eluvians basically screw everyone over.

Well for some it's easy. If I'm romancing Solas, I want maximum arcane stuff running around. My Blackwall save has GW Beth, the Architect, and Avernus experiments.

But Cullen doesn't really have a theme the way those two do, so I'm at a loss regarding the world.

Maybe because catch phrases are a little bit lame... Anyhoo, that's why I personally haven't added one to the thread title. We have enough trouble with folks taking us seriously...

Agreed. Personally, I think Cullen is cool enough without a catchprhase but I laughed very hard about some of the ideas   .

If there's really a need for a catch phrase, can I humbly submit "Came for the Cullen, stayed for the company"? It's been something we've rocked on our Cullen banners since way back. :)

This may be a weird time to bring this up, but it does remind me of a concern I've had: when the game drops in a few months (eeeee!!) this whoooole thread will change from one where Cullen fans who are excited about him come together, to one where ANYONE who has played the game and has something they want to say about Cullen will come to put their thoughts on the table.

It won't always feel like a big happy family in here anymore, and we've no right to shut anyone out who doesn't share our enthusiasm. So just... I hope we can all be mentally prepared for those changes, mentally prepared for some of us to even be shocked or let down by what the writers may choose to do with him, and also prepared to be perfectly decent to the horde of new faces and new (or old) opinions we'll be inundated with before long.

It's easy for me to feel a sense of group ownership over this place because it's been just we very committed fans for five years now, but that won't stop the very strong fan reaction now that he's such a big deal. :/

My evil masterplan is to go into hiding after the game is released until I have finished it. That might take a few months. And then 'The Witcher 3' comes out so I'm occupied for a few more months. By the time I return the dust has settled and this is a happy place again  ;)

Okay, I'm joking... a bit. I agree that it's important not to shut people out as long as they are polite and interested in a civil discussion. And different points of view may reveal some interesting aspects about the character so I think it's important to have these discussions.

on a more serious note, though. do you all think Cullen was planned to even be an advisor all along? Or was he put in the role when they decided to "give him a chance" at romance w/the extra time they then had?

Yes, I think it was planned all along that he is an advisor and that they only added the romance as an extra bonus. Things like these get probably decided early in the design/development process. The advisors fulfill important duties and have influence on the players gaming experience. That means you have to plan something like that, build it, test it and then rebuild it.

alright i gotta go run errands. sigh. but hey i'm picking up my new xbox 1--tinysquee--and my new free game that comes with....maybe  watchdogs? idk.

be back later! :kissing:

LOL. The kind of errands I like  B) .

I think this is an important point, that this is a discussion thread, not a fan thread. Deliberately. And we welcome all civil discussion and new perspectives.

I have to respectfully disagree on the usefulness of the FAQ tho. I don't recall any exact instance to which you may be referring, but I think directing someone respectfully to the FAQ to answer a "frequently asked question" is fine. I think we should also invite that person back to discuss once their curiosity is (or isn't) satisfied. But I don't think it's reasonable to expect that we should feel obliged to repeat the exact same answer every single time, when we're busy and not always in possession if some file with canned, cut-and-pastable responses. Our canned responses are already on the thread, in the FAQ.

I think it should also be said, we're also not a hive mind here as a service to the community. We're a random collection if individuals checking in as we can. If someone wants to launch into an answer they may, and often do. To be honest, I think referring someone to the FAQ is better than ignoring it altogether.

I think it depends on how you direct someone to the FAQ. I remember that you also told me to check out the first page of this thread when I started to post here (and I still haven't read everything.) I didn't have any problem with that. But sometimes I'm under the impression that people are overly sensitive and react a bit harsh.

lol I would even play really nasty characters, with the intent on romancing zev, doing things that make Alistair hate me so I wouldn't be tempted but I'd fail badly every time. It's usually at Flemeths hut, when he just lost every one. I just want to hold him

*Sighs* My main World State I am trying to make so good and just "Golden" while my other planned one is quite...bad...for example I am thinking of having Varric keep the shard, Merrill keeping the Eluvian intact, siding with the Templars...allowing the Architect to live, siding with Jeneka, and protecting Amaranthine rather than Vigil's Keep.

I feel like serenai's point may be directed me since in the last few days I think I have directed someone to the FAQ twice. Both times, I feel like the people with questions did not enter the thread as though they necessarily wanted a civil discussion as they did seem somewhat hostile to Cullen and his role in Inquisition. However, I did try my best to explain why I disagreed with their viewpoint politely and respectfully and offered my own insight into his character. However, I feel I'm not the best at expressing myself at times so I offered up the FAQ as a means to have what I wanted to say said right, as I feel the FAQ does that very well. I'm not opposed to discussing to people who aren't fans of Cullen, I feel like it is important for the discussion to take place between people who are in some agreement about who the character is and why Cullen has acted the way he has acted, because if we disagree on the fundamental, core points of the character, it will just end up in a heated argument.

I apologise if I came off as rude to whoever thought I was, but know that it wasn't my intention.

Absolutely not. I was not talking about you :) You're usually very nice even if you're being blunt.. lol.. this happened a couple of weeks ago. BrushYourTeeth's post reminded me of it again and i just wanted to mention it. And to R2's point - I do know the FAQ is very valuable. When directed to it respectfully as you (always so) eloquently put it.

I'm not so eloquent at times so I apologize if I misrepresented - I never meant that the FAQ is not something we should direct people to, after all that's why it's there and it's a wonderful resource. My point was that people were doing so not very nicely and because they stated they were tired of explaining things and their own viewpoints over and over.

But I also get that people do get tired of being put on the defensive, and sometimes innocent questions can seem overly belligerent, especially when that's all we get for days in a row. I just know that collectively we are better than that.

I have to run for now but I'll be back later. I just wanted to post and clear that up and I'm sorry if it came across wrong earlier.

My canon has the mirror destroyed and the shard kept. I don't want anything bad to happen to Merrill, so keeping her away from the Eluvian is best for me, even if it means keeping her out of the story. Or should that be especially if it means keeping her out of the story?
I let Varric keep the shard because I'm one of the few who didn't care much for Varric. Hopefully the shard'll help him grow a personality. Or at least some cool lyrium crystals.
