Cullen question

I don't remember how many pages back it was , or if someone already asked this question. But awhile back I saw what I can assume (correct me if I'm wrong) is a dialogue tree spread sheet, where Cullen is defusing a argument between Mages and Templars. Were a Templar calls him Knight Captain, and he says something along the lines that he/they are no longer a Templars.

I'm not trying to start a flame war here, but IMO it seems like he is trying to separate himself from the Templars as a whole. However, I don't have all the information other then what I was shown here, so I shooting in the dark.

So how about ya'll, how do you think your non-Cullenmancer Quizzies will fare with him?

To be honest, I hadn't actually thought that far ahead. I tend to just roll with it and see where he/she takes me. The only Inquisitor I have any prior knowledge about is my first one because it's always a self insert, so it's just a case of staying in character to make sure she behaves like me, rather than taking the "easy"/"out of character" options. Obviously she'll be romancing Cullen so I know she'll mostly get on with him... hopefully.

My Dalish mage Terrwyn will probably be wary of him at first. He was once a templar, and I imagine since the war the Dalish clans may have clashed once or twice with them. She also prefers to talk things out and settle for compromise before resorting to a direct approach, so she will butt heads with him over strategy. Depending on how his arc goes, I think eventually Terrwyn will come to respect him a great deal...and find it hilarious that Cullen calls the Keeper the Dalish Queen. She will never let him live it down.

His profile says that after Kirkwall, Cullen started having doubts about the Templars.  He figures they failed thier duty to protect the mages of Kirkwall as well as its citizens.  He's lost something of his idealism, and is looking for something to believe in.  Enter the Inquisition.

:P My background is southern, rural, and isolated.  Don't get me wrong, there are things about country living that I wouldn't trade for the world, but it also takes a lot longer to change the things that need changing around here, if you get what I'm saying.  On top of all that, I was (am) a Baptist preacher's daughter, which comes with a whole set of other issues.  By the time I was in my teens, I was well on my way to questioning just about everything that I'd taken for granted as a child...and was butting heads with almost everyone in my family because of it.  I'm still the black sheep sort of...but I've learned to like it.  ^_^

Hmmm, I think we've been living parallel lives, except I wasn't the preacher's daughter, and I've mostly lived in towns and cities (not all in the south) since I've been an adult. And I'm definitely the black sheep still, and rather proud of it ;)

That's how we've been interpreting it, but it's hard to be certain exactly what was going on because we only saw a few words of each, and the mage's dialogue is hidden.

It's hard to tell what tone of voice he's saying it in, so I've no idea.

I don't usually plan out romances before playing the game TBH.  I obviously know which characters I as a player find attractive, but it's kind of up to how well they gel with my PC, so I don't know which of my PCs will wind up being the Cullenmancer!

That said my first PC will be a Dalish rogue who's fairly openminded and easygoing, so I think she and Cullen will get along well regardless of romance.  My Tywin Lannister-esque male Trevalyan and my gives-no-s*** lady Vashoth might butt heads with him though  :D

I can see why he is distancing himself from the Lamberts Templar.

We have a Templar army who want to kill all mages led by Lambert or his successor (Asunder)

We have a Mage army being led by Alistairs mother Fiona (Asunder)

We have the neutrals who want to work together to find a better future (Wardens, Mages and Templar at Weisshaupt) - I'm all for these guys...

Such great posts recently! I've enjoyed reading over the last few pages. Throwing out a few thoughts here:

1. As others have said, Cullen is certainly flawed in many ways. But given his circumstances, the world setting, the mere existence if magic and demons and monsters (something we can certainly sympathize with and imagine, but not truly know/empathize given the absence if such IRL) I think his flaws are understandable. More so we see him act in ways that suggest growth and a strong undercurrent if honor/mercy/etc, so I'm willing (and excited!) to see where he goes in DAI

2. That said I'm not going into DAI absolutely, 100% certain my first PC will romance Cullen. I am certain it's what I want to TRY first, but without playing the game I can't know if it'll really work out. I anticipate great things from the character and his story but I could end up discovering it doesn't mesh at all with my PC/PT. So keeping that thought in the back if my head, I guess?

3. I think it's true that some fans come off as "blinded" by their love for Cullen but I also think others just as easily come off as "blinded" by their hatred if either him or what they feel he represents. I come from an interesting religious background of Judaism/Catholicism - I was raised predominantly in the latter but grew to identify and jive far more with a liberal view of the former. My husband comes from a strong Pentecostal/Catholic background. He's pretty much a Diest himself now. But we've got family on both sides with strong fundamentalist views. There are things they believe that drive me bonkers: but as a whole they are good people, doing the best they can with what they have and many are sincerely trying to learn about different theologies/beliefs/lifestyles than their own, to varying degrees of success. I may not agree on a lot of things with my various inlaws or my own mixed-bag family, but they are still good people. I think it's too easy to equate disagreement with absolute incompatibility is what I'm trying to say, I guess!

4. On a much lighter note: I actually REALLY hope that I'm successful at romancing someone OTHER than Cullen in later runs if DAI, lol. I have a real bad habit of getting stuck on one LI. In ME it was Garrus, in DAO it was Alistair and DA2 it ended up being Fenris. (My first run was Anders... It did not turn out well >.<) Fenris was really the only LI that interested me in DA2 once I saw the romance... But I DID try to do a full Kaidan run in ME and Zevran for DAO... The attempts always fail. I get too attached to what -I- personally like, which is frustrating! (Though at least Zevran makes a kickass friend/companion so I never felt I missed our on a connection).
But in DAO there are four companions (so far at least) that I REALLY wanna try (Cullen, Blackwall, IB and Solas) which is a first for me. I'm hoping, HOPING to get over my weird commitment hang up to imaginary LIs and have four solid runs of the game.

Well that would be all of them, so

I'm sure they'll get on fine. I don't intend to write any jerks... I mean play any jerks. In RPGs I always feel like I'm "writing" my characters  :pinched:

Not sure if I will still play my planned inquisitors or start from scratch.

My Esmerelda won't like him. But she's full on Libertarian, pro-Tevinter, pro-Mage!Stupid, and haughty, self absorbed and stubborn, so I would only expect as much! She might think his advice is sound, but she's too proud to admit it.

My Hissra, Ren and Anthony will like him much more though. :D

Hah, funnily enough I'm loosely basing my Esmerelda on Cersei, just without the total wincest.

I do the same!! Well in DAO Zevran was really my only option, so that doesn't count. But I've done around 15 playthroughs or so of romancing Fenris. I've romanced all the others (well never finished the game with Merrill) and love them to bits, but Fenris is my Hawke's soul mate. And in ME I tried to go for Cortez in ME3 but after spending two games with Kaidan and all that unresolved tension between them... it's impossible not to choose Kaidan!

I don't see myself having this problem in DAI since I only have two options and only mildly like one of them, but who knows, things could change once I play the game and mod it to hell and back
