Did you support Meredith at the beginning of Act 3 to get the "old friend" one or do you have to make pro-mage choices to get his "less of a friend" one?

 

It doesn't seem to be tied to who you side with in the Act 3 opening (I've got the "friend" line while siding with either Orsino and Meredith), so much as to how you speak to him. If you choose lots of, it's the Templars fault, not all mages, the Circle doesn't work, mages need to be free etc dialogue lines, he'll give you the "less of a friend" line in Act 3. If you are either neutral to the whole conflict or choose Chantry-friendly responses (like being against blood magic or acknowledging the need for the Circle even if it's a faulty system), he'll give you the "old friend" greeting in Act 3. At least that's been my experience.

 

You could be a mage and side with Orsino/mages in general and still get Cullen's friendship, as long as you don't antagonize his Chantry-bred views or take on radical tones when talking to him, in example. It's more about how you choose to talk to him than who you side with.

Cullen didn't comment on our friendship either way to my recollection, but Hawke called him a friend and that's good enough for me.

 

And canon/first playthrough Warden and Hawke are done.

My understanding is that the "less of friend" comment is for a pro-templar playthrough, which can be achieved through several choices (there are something like 5 possible plot points to get that achievement; choosing Mer at the start of Act 3 is just one of them; kicking out Keran is another). But, I don't think any of these are actually linked to how you treat Cullen so much as how you respond to those plots.

As promised, a bit of a Cullen-centric intro fic for my Lavellan mage inquisitor.  Bioware owns all, I just play in their sandbox.

Author’s note: I rarely create truly beautiful characters as I feel more average and realistic characters are more fun to play.  Adahl is an exception, her beauty has defined how others perceive her and her awareness of this has isolated her. 

 

 

It was 9:41 Dragon by human reckoning when the world fell apart.  I had been tending Daverin’s daughter, ill with the human’s spotted fever.  Retashi was waiting when I emerged from the araval to the starlit forest.

 

“Adahl, sun of Arlathan.  Why do you deny my suit?  There is none is all the clans who can compare.”

 

“Tash, I am weary of repeating myself.  I do not love you.”

 

“For the good of the clans, Adahl.  You have denied every suitor at the last two Arlathvhen.  You are gifted by the Gods, both in magic and beauty.  Your children would be a blessing to all the Elvhen.  We do not live as our ancestors did, for untold centuries.  It is time you make a decision.”

 

“I will not marry without love, Tash.  I am weary of repeating myself.  Now why are you here?”

 

“The Keeper needs you.  There has been news.”  The rangy hunter moved to my side as I headed toward the Keeper’s araval.  It was not that I disliked Retashi, in truth he had been a friend before he started pressing his suit.  But, like so many others, I felt he desired Adahsulahn, song of the forest and First of clan Lavellan, not Adahl with callouses and ink stained fingers.  I left him outside the Keeper’s door and entered the candle lit sanctuary. 

 

“Aneth ara, Adahl.  I see Retashi found you.”  Worry wrinkled the Keeper’s brow, my cousin and elder by less than a dozen years she looked decades older in the flickering light.

 

“He said there had been news.  Though I could wish for a different messenger.”

 

“The news may give you some respite from his campaign, though for the good of the clans I wish you would accept someone.”   Her wry smile acknowledged both respect for my position and exasperation at the trouble it had caused her.

 

“I am to travel then?  The Conclave is truth, not rumor?”  Unease spiraled from my chest.  I had little knowledge of humans and their ways, only a few chance encounters which had done nothing to dispel my wariness.

 

“I am afraid so.  I wish I had another to send but the twins have barely received their vallaslin and I cannot go myself.”

 

“My pack is ready.” I sighed, “I hope the humans can see wisdom for once.”

 

“That is my hope as well.  Evorith and Merilith are packed and ready to leave with you at first light.  Dareth shiral.”

 

“Ma nuvenin, Keeper.”

 

 

 

The Conclave was a bewildering array of humans and elves from many nations.  There were even a handful of dwarves and a few Qunari whom I had only heard about in stories.  The noise was overwhelming with all trying to speak at once without the quiet courtesy of an Arlathvhen.  The Templars created an oppressive air wherever they went, often followed by curses and insults from long oppressed mages.  The atmosphere was thick with suppressed violence and hatred.

 

There were many voices of moderation on both sides attempting to keep a lid on the simmering pot.  I suppose I should not have been surprised when they failed.  The explosion shattered the old human temple and tore the veil asunder.  One moment I was listening to a heated debate, the next I was flung violently upward and into the surreal.

 

Few Elvhen mages traverse the Beyond except in great need.  Its guardian spirits are entities of both tremendous need and strong will, any who tread their domain unwarily are targets for their traps and deceptions.  Now, the searing pain in my head and warm blood trickling down my scalp attested to my entry into their realm not in spirit, but with my physical body as none since the Tevinter magisters of eons past had done.   The images flickered from step to step, changing as the spirits warped perceptions and I struggled to find my way.

 

I do not remember how I came to fall back to the hard stone and bitter wind of the Frostbacks.  There was light and noise and pain.  I crawled forward only to see hundreds, maybe thousands of burned skeletons frozen forever in terror.  Human voices wavered in my ringing ears as my vision funneled and turned black. 

I awoke again to the nightmare, two humans carting me from the scene of carnage toward a stern figure in armor, the Templar symbol clearly embossed on his gauntlets.  The humans halted and I attempted to regain my feet, only to stare in horror at the unearthly green glow arising from my palm.

 

“Watch out, she’s casting!” 

 

The Templar’s smite dropped me to the ground and I knew no more.

 

 

 

The next day I was brought before the angry woman, one of the human Chantry’s fabled Seekers.  The human Templar, the one who had dared smite me was with her.

 

“How did you survive when all others perished?” The Seeker already had me judged and condemned by her expression.

 

“I do not know.  I was drawn into the Beyond, something I thought impossible.  When I found my way out all I saw was death.”

 

“Yet you bear a piece of the fade in your hand.  I see no other to blame.”

 

“If you are looking to find fault, look to your own.  It was not the Elvhen who used the blood of slaves to corrupt the Beyond, nor was it the Elvhen who burned your Andraste or declared the Exalted Marches in which so many died.”

 

“We speak of the present here, mage.”

 

“My people have borne witness to the suffering human stupidity has caused for millennium. Ripping holes into the Beyond is just the latest catastrophe to lay at your feet.”  I struggled to suppress the contempt in my voice. 

 

“Don’t lecture me, elf.  All I know is you are alive and fade marked when all others are dead.”

 

“I did not cause this and I have no idea who did or how.  You had hundreds of mages and Templars at each other’s throats yet you blame the Elvhen?   If anyone to blame it is your people.  You cage those who are vessels for the Gods’ gifts, send them unprepared and ill-trained into the Beyond to face powerful spirits and condemn those who fail to meet your trials to a living death.  I would not even be here, but for the threat your misguided Chantry represents.”

 

“How many villages have you seen burned by abominations?  Innocent lives lost because a mage lost control, or worse invited a demon to aid them?” 

 

“Such a thing is rare among our people.  We are taught to control and revere our gifts and have no need to deal with treacherous spirits.  You make your mages afraid and deny them training unless they submit to your collars.  Fear and ignorance are your enemies, not those who wield magic.”

 

“We are not here to discuss the Circles!  Look!”  The Seeker flung an arm toward the bruised sky.  “What do you say to that?”

 

“That is the true abomination.  I do not know how the veil was torn, but I know it must be sealed.  I have no wish to carry the Beyond in my hand the rest of my days and even if I did it would be cowardly and dishonorable, akin to ignoring a blight, to turn my back.”

 

“You are offering your aid?”

 

“I am.  I was First to my clan’s Keeper, I think you will not find me wanting.”

 

The Seeker’s attention was drawn to an approaching scout in dirty leathers before she turned back to me.  “Do you have any healing skills?”

 

“Yes.”

 

“Knight-Captain, would you escort our guest to the infirmary?”  The Seeker strode off to intercept the scout, barely waiting for the Templar’s acknowledging nod.

 

“Come this way, m….” The Templar stumbled over his words, perhaps remembering our less than cordial first meeting, then extended his hand in human greeting.  “We should be introduced, I am Cullen.”

 

My instinct was to decline his gesture but I refused to be cowed by those wary amber eyes.  “Adahsulahn Lavellen.” The human greeting was strange, the grip of his sword calloused hand firm against my own.

 

“You are a mage?”  His expression was puzzled as he looked at my own work-hardened hand.

 

I slid my fingers free of his grip before I understood his confusion.  “Indeed.  We Dalish are not confined like your Circle leashed mages.  I work and hunt, as do all clan members.”

 

“The Circles protect everyone, including mages.”

 

“And we can see how well that works.”  I waved toward the green, bruised sky above us.

 

The human’s jaw clenched in irritation and the amber eyes narrowed.  Then he sighed and rubbed a weary hand across his eyes.  “I have injured soldiers who need help.  Can we bury our differences for now?”

 

I nodded in acknowledgement.  “Truce then?”

 

“Come this way.”

 
I entered the makeshift infirmary to be inundated with the odors and sounds of the darker side of war.  Stale blood, vomit, urine and sundered bowels scented the air in accompaniment to the wheezes, groans and cries of the wounded.  Perhaps a dozen beds clustered near the fire with many more bedrolls stretched out on all sides in the old barn.

 
“Mikkel, this is Adahsul….”  The Templar stumbled over the syllables.  “Um, she is here to help with the wounded.”

 

“You can call me Adahl.”  I surveyed the infirmary, mentally cataloging the number of injured.  “What supplies do you have?”

 

Mikkel waited for Cullen’s approving nod before answering.  “We have lots of elfroot and plenty of boiled cloth for bandages.  I can make basic healing poultices but that’s it.”

 

“I see.”  I turned to Cullen.  “There are many more here than I can simply heal.   I need supplies to brew stronger poultices and other medicines.  I will need my pouch of herbs and supplies for distillation and concentration of ingredients.”

 

“Give me your list.  I will see what can be done.”

 
I seated myself at the wobbly desk near the entrance and, with the Templar looking over my shoulder, made a concise list of ingredients and supplies as well as sketches of distillation and concentration devices that could likely be assembled from mundane items.

 
“If you have some recipes or directions I have some slight knowledge of these techniques.  I can assign some of my men to at least begin the basic preparations.”

 
I nodded answer to the Templar and filled another sheet with the simpler preparation steps before rising to begin my true task.  “Mikkel, can you give me your assessment of your most critical patients?”

 

The soldier-healer nodded his assent and guided me toward the beds near the fire.  As he detailed each patient’s condition I noticed Cullen giving both the lists and verbal instruction to another soldier.  The young man took the papers and left the barn with a crisp salute.  The Templar then returned his hawk like gaze to my progress.

 
My skin crawled at the supervision, only a brief taste of what Circle mages must have endured.  I knelt beside the officer with the fractured skull and called upon the magic singing in my blood.  Deliberately blocking out the smells and groans of the wounded and the creaking armor of my watchdog I sank my consciousness down into the bone shards and pooled blood compressing the injured man’s brain.  Carefully, using only a tiny tendril of force I lifted each piece of fractured bone and gently guided the blood clots away from the injury and out through the damaged skin.  It was delicate work to realign all the damaged bone, to remove the swelling and repair the blood vessels and fragile brain tissue.   And I could only hope there was no permanent damage to the function of the brain, such injury would be beyond my ability to heal.   As I eased myself out of the healing trance I noticed the officer’s breathing was now deep and even with none of the irregular gasping that led me to choose him as my first patient.

 
Mikkel was at my side offering water and a tentative smile as I rose.  “Will he live now?”

 

“I believe so, but his brain may be damaged.”  I sipped at the water, conscious of the needs of my own body with sustained healing.  After only a few moments I dropped to my knees by the next bed, the pink froth on its occupant’s lips speaking plainly of a punctured lung.  Again I sought the healing trance so I could find each section of damaged tissue and carefully reconstruct it.

 

There was a chair by the next bed and more water to drink when I resurfaced, the kindly Mikkel giving me a tentative smile as I thanked him.  Sitting gratefully I raised the next patient’s blanket to the ruin of a crushed leg and pelvis.  Swallowing hard I turned to my silent guard.  “Instead of standing there waiting to smite me, perhaps you could give me some help?  I don’t have infinite mana and if I have to straighten all of this by myself I may not have much left for the others.”

 

The Templar frowned but yielded his post to approach my patient.  “What do you need me to do?”

 

“If you and Mikkel can help straighten and splint the leg I will restore the damaged blood flow, stabilize the pelvis and realign the small bone fragments. The wounds will also need cleaned with the elfroot mixture I gave you.   I do not have the resources to heal all the fractures tonight and still help others.”  A curt nod was all the response I needed before delving again into the minutia of reconnecting severed vessels and nerves.

 
The day progressed, each bed a slightly different challenge and an increasing drain on both my magic and stamina.  The few breaks to supervise and direct those compounding the potions and poultices I needed and the bowl of unnamed stew I gulped around midday were scarcely enough to restore my flagging energy.

 

Finally, as twilight dimmed I sat down beside the last bed, the source of the miasma of sundered bowels and a patient who was likely hopeless.  Still, I had some strength left and he was the last of the gravely wounded.  I removed the stinking, soiled bandages and assessed the angry red loops of bowel with their oozing rents.

 
A pair of amber eyes met mine over the bloodied mess that had once been a man’s abdomen.   “He was a good man.”

 

Oddly, it was the acceptance in those eyes that challenged my assessment of the soldier’s fate.  “I make no guarantee, but I would like to try.”

 

“I will help then.  I know it is a slim chance.”  A faint crinkle in the fine lines around Cullen’s eyes hinted at the smile he might have had if he were not as weary as I.

 
Painstakingly we cleaned each section of sundered bowel as we laid the man’s insides on boiled, elfroot soaked towels for healing.  Each section of contaminated abdomen with its foul smelling debris and strings of yellow, reactive discharge was swabbed and rinsed many times.  A deep puncture in one kidney required delicate healing, as did the rent in the bladder.  One section of intestine, nearly 2 feet in length was beyond repair and trimmed out with Cullen’s razor sharp dagger, the Templar blanching even as I reconnected the severed ends with fragile bonds of magic.  Finally, the last section was healed and the abdomen was as clean as we could make it.  I spent the last of my healing energy to mend the thin membrane of peritoneum before I fell, dizzy, out of my trance.  Strong arms, smelling of elfroot and steel caught me before I fell.

 

“A valiant effort, my lady.”

 

“It is not finished.  I need the tools that were in my pack.”  My vision swam, darkness crowding around the edges, but I could not fail now.

 

“Mikkel, the lady’s pack.”  Cullen held my arms, kept me from falling from the chair as the soldier searched for my instruments.

 

“M’lady, are these what you need?”  Mikkel held the pouch containing my instruments, and most importantly, the coils of gut preserved in distilled spirits.

 

“Yes, thank you.”  I cautiously threaded the fine steel needle with a piece of gut as Cullen moved behind me, his presence a support for the delicate task ahead.

Fine sutures of gut brought both muscle and fat into alignment.  Then a bit of silk for the skin and the task was done.  I swayed in the Templar’s arms, my fingertips numb with effort and exhaustion yet still seeking the thready pulse of my patient.  From far away I felt the scratchy wool of a blanket draped over me and heard the quiet prayers to the human Maker who was no more likely to answer than my own Elvhen gods.

At the very least, a CC demo would make it so I can spend all those hours lovingly tweaking my PC ahead of time!

Writers have said that they are as full but only lack talk during travelling. It's downside to not be able to have LI on your side but otherwise the romance is going to have same amount content.
