Well, it's possible he was written as straight before they decided to add him as a Romance, though that Would mean There was a reason for him being straight in his plot.

Yeah, seems unlikely, but we won't know till we play the game.

In the DAO Dalish origin, there are two elves to the side practicing archery in their camp. If you talk to them, you find out one of them is a CE that the clan took in so recently that you hadn't met him yourself. So the Sabrae clan seems to be more open than some, which makes sense if you talk to Master Varathorn during the Nature of the Beast quest and find out your father, the prior Keeper, advocated openly for more contact with the human world.

I dunno, does their need to be a plot related reason for him to be straight? For all we know, Viv could be part of the LGBT community and only the last one would be enough of a plot-reason for why she'd not wish to engage in any romance? Or she's not a LI for no other reason than because she's asexual?

Poor Pol, I always wish we'd been able to save him in DA2 and been able to stop him from running into that Varterral.

I didn't play DA2 so I missed that. Now I feel really bad for him... :(

He's a character.... he was written straight for a reason, whether for story reasons (unlikely) or practical reasons.

In all honesty, I think it was a matter of practicality, but his story was changed to fit that practical necessity.

It's irritating as hell that they couldn't make him LGBT, but that would have probably meant a sacrifice elsewhere, taking away bits of romance from someone else. And as much as I am irritated, I couldn't take away that away from them.

It so annoying that he does that and makes no sense whatsoever <_<

I didn't know that about Mahariel's father! I really don't know anything about their parentage. Though I understand you can learn something about the mother in one of the DLCs...?

And yeah I think some clans are more open than others. Some even trade freely with human villages. Some kill humans on sight! So it just depends on the clan. I wonder what kind of clan Lavellan will be. I'm hoping a rather isolated clan because that's how I've formed my characters in my head.

I dunno, does their need to be a plot related reason for him to be straight?

Well yeah there would be for me since he's an extra straight romance option. When you're writing, you decide as you write (or perhaps during planning) what a character's orientation will be... it's just part of character development. And... I have more to say but a colleague just walked into my office and interrupted my train of thought, AND I have class in five minutes lol

Yeah, because he was raised as an Andrastian before he joined the Dalish, he shares their fear of Blood Mages. Which causes him to immediately freak out at the sight of Merrill and ends up running straight into the Varterral's lair.

It's a really sad scene, especially if you played as a Sarcastic Hawke because immediately before this happens Hawke's response to him being scared of Merrill is to quip "Merrill couldn't hurt you if she tried, at worst she might make frowny faces". Major mood whiplash.

I go talk to EVERYONE when I'm in a town/camp/etc., and sometimes go back several times, so yes, you can find out quite a bit about the Dalish Warden's parents.

It's mentioned that Mahariel's father was the Keeper of the Sabrae clan before Marethari, which may imply she used to be his First. Sadly, we never know much about Mahariel's mother than she was one of the clan's hunters.

It's the CE's mother we learn about in Leliana's Song, as Leliana meets/rescues her from the Arl of Denerim's dungeon.

Weirdly, I've actually been blindsided before by the exact opposite of this in my own writing.

While plotting out ideas for a multi-Warden fic (I still have yet to sit down and write out properly), I was pleasantly surprised to realise when it came to my Dwarf Commoner's trip to the Pearl, he ended up going off with one of the male prostitutes. I was like, "Huh, wait a second, Faren likes guys? When did that happen?"

But going back over his characterisation and what I'd planned for him thus far, it just sort of all fit together? I debated whether I should change it so that Zev wasn't paired up with another (female) Warden, but ultimatey decided against it because Zevran just wasn't his type and Faren'd probably have more of a crush on someone like Sten?

No, there's no need for a plot related reason for him being straight. It is howewer possible.
I'm Honestly unsure. As Artemis said, we'll have to play to know.

That's pretty much Sarcastic Hawke playthrough in a nutshell.  Hawke's being all blithe and silly, then something horrifically awful happens

I just noticed recently that Pol from DA2 is Pol from DAO and got so sad when he died! I really liked Pol.

I also noticed some other things during my latest playthrough. How Vaughan (assistant of Viscount) is the one who got sex disease and is seeing Anders because of it. How Saemus is in relationship with the qunari. It's nice to start to know more about the NPC's :)

I had something similar happen to me; just part of the writing process

I had written this character previously in an RP; he was very developed because I've been doing this RP with a dear friend for 10+ years now. And in this RP he is gay. Well in the novel I'm writing (b/c everyone's writing a novel, right?!), this character also appears, and I wasn't really sure what his sexuality was... he wasn't a main character so it wasn't important. But then later on I realized he had a crush on a female guard. So I realized in this story, he was straight. Not bi but straight! (Another one of my characters went from gay to bi.) I could keep writing him as gay, but I like his little romance with the guard, so straight it is!

It happens

To mix things up. Same reason we have bisexuals and homosexuals in the game, it's just how the devs/writers wanted to do it this time around, rather than them all being bi like in DA2 (Seb doesn't count).

You mean the Sword of Mercy? Maybe it's intentional? Maybe it shows which Templar faction they belong to?

Actually, the Dalish warden's mother belonged to another clan (unnamed) who disapproved of the match and they were meeting in secret which is how the father was killed. The mother essentially commits suicide after the warden is born, or at least so it's implied.
