OMG I GET IT NOW.
I GET IT.
The Cullen love. I understand now.
Just sided with the templars in DA2 for the first time ever, and I now understand this thread's adoration of him. CULLEN IS AMAZEBALLS!!!
Also, it is almost 3am here, so I'm probably going to be super embarrassed by this post come morning.
But I am now officially a "Cullenite," and not just someone who stalks this thread for news.
I almost feel as if his entire character development is some sort of "Where's Waldo" game by the writers. Worth it though. So very, very worth it.
So basically posting this because (as previously stated) its oh-dark-thirty here and I just needed a place to squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Cross over, wildelight, all are welcome! Squee away. The reveal of Cullen awesomeness is an important moment. ![]()

Wildelight...you mean this defining moment...yes?

Wildelight...you mean this defining moment...yes?
*snip of Cullen being amazeballs*
Yesyesyesyesyes! That exact moment, that exact line!
Stop reading my mind. *Equips tinfoil hat and glares suspiciously*
But in all seriousness, I now consider Cullen to be one of the most multifaceted, intriguing characters in the DA franchise. Heck, in recent fiction in general. And I edit books for a living!
Amazing how a single line of dialogue can make a novel's worth of difference.
Wildelight, just wondering if you ever played as a female mage in Origins? There's a little side story with Cullen if you did.
I have indeed. And I found Cullen to be . . . cute, I guess. Like a puppy. Who then turned into abused-Humane-Society-rescue-puppy after the Broken Circle. Don't get me wrong, I liked Cullen. He obviously was a lad of superior taste, able to see and admire my f!Amell's many charms.
But, in my personal opinion, DA:O Cullen seems crafted to fill a role. In DA2, he becomes a character. In his conflicted defiance of Meredith, he becomes a great character.
Well, welcome to our weird and wonderful world in all it's Cullen glory! ![]()
WELCOME!
Have a cookie!
They're shortbread
mmm I love a good cookie. Heck I like a bad one two ![]()
Thanks for all the welcomes
Not sure if this has been shared before...
That is a very hot picture.
Well done to the artist!
@ Wildelight, that is exactly why I have more Templar endings than Mage ones...I love following Cullens story arc. I have never understood a certain factions total hatred of a character that grows so much in game. Hopefully we'll see some more development in DAI...angst seems to follow Cullen about...poor Noodle.
Presumably that scene where he tries to protect the 3 mages if you side with the Templars still happens regardless, we just don't see it as pro-mage because we're not in that area at the time... and the 3 mages obviously die because Hawke isn't there to override Meredith's opinion on the matter.
@LolaLei yes that's the scene.

I'm gonna steal that bolded word
Welcome!

This is also what I assume (and it was interesting to write it that way in What Counts). It's tough that he requires Hawke's say so to override Meredith, which underscores yet again what a feat it is for him personally to do so in the ending. It's such an obvious evolution of his character that it's a shame most folks never see the pro-templar scenes.

Welcome!
You need the word 'totes' to go with it - as in 'Cullen is totes amazeballs'! ![]()

Exactly. He's humanly inconsistent because he's changing and growing over time, struggling with things that matter to him. When you talk to people who've risked themselves to do something heroic, it isn't uncommon to find out that there was some event previously when they hadn't acted or stood by because they felt they had to then regretted it (or the event showed them what was wrong with their beliefs). That's why I find Cullen so fascinating; he's not even particularly my type romantically (sorry, but shy and awkward, if he still is, is cute but a non-starter for me). But I can't wait to talk to him and hear what he has to say now.
Oh, and welcome!

I kinda hope that he manages to save them. That whole scene looked like the templars were looking up to him already, not to Meredith. Maybe they just escorted the mages outside, but didn't kill them.
They were not very happy about it. Look, here's a templar mourning the mage he had to kill:

So maybe if Hawke wasn't there, Cullen said, "Escort the mage to the courtyard and execute them (except don't execute them, ok?)"
I like to think he doesn't need the Champion to make his men do what he wants.

I think he should have stood up to Meredith before he went through with the annulment. I don't know if he agreed with Meredith's reasoning about stopping a riot or not, but it didn't sound like he thought the blood magic threat was serious enough to annul the circle. Maybe he can explain it, and maybe he'll just say its one of the biggest mistakes of his career, but my inquisitor won't be able to understand why he didn't take a stand earlier.

Oh, is he mourning him? I thought he was tea-bagging him when I first saw the image.

Can't he do both?
Edit: Welcome to the thread, wildelight!
Oh, is he mourning him? I thought he was tea-bagging him when I first saw the image.
Aww, man was ordered to behead another human being, who he thought was innocent, who his duty was to protect. I bet he later joined the Inquisition and became that impossibly handsome templar BioWare people were tweeting about
I hear his beauty rivals Cullen's. But I will believe it only when I see it myself.

We don't know what Meredith told him. He wasn't there when Anders did the thing. In the Gallows he says that he hopes to resolve the conflict with little bloodshed. I suppose he hopes that if mages are innocent, they will surrender, and they will have to fight only blood mages (because initially it was supposed to be about blood mages, until Anders killed Elthina). But as they progress, he notices that Meredith just wants everyone dead, and realizes that she is the problem. Why didn't he oppose her until she turned on Hawke? Because it's difficult to do something like that when you are being attacked by mages, shades, demons and abominations, and that's what was happening, culminating in Orsino himself resorting to blood magic, and turning into a creepy flesh golem. I believe Cullen just didn't have the time to think it all through and act earlier. But I would like to hear what he has to say about that whole thing in DAI. I wonder what he was told about the annulment too.
