You have NO IDEA how much this irks me!! Janeway telling her crew to call her MA'AM is one of my favorite scenes in television history!
Honestly, I understand the reasoning behind using a generic "sir" or "milord". Once I got used to it, I kind of liked it milord, at least. There's no suggestion that the woman's title is dependent on her relationship to a man if they're called the same thing. And I'd imagine in an alien-heavy military service, using a generic "sir" for everyone avoids worrying cultural (or gender identity) misunderstandings.

Because it assumes male/masculine is default while woman/feminine is other.
I appreciate BioWare's use of "serah" and "ser"; it's quite nice!

I definitely like serah, though I did like it when my Cousland Warden was called milady from some people. Better than "Grey Warden".

It's a tricky question, and the idea that masculine is default is a major problem. There are pros and cons to using just a single term for everyone and to using separate terms, and in either case, it unfortunately implies masculine as universal and feminine as the particular/other, though English isn't as bad as some languages. I'd prefer a completely non-gendered title myself.

Think of it the same way female PCs are routinely called "sir" by military in games. Ignore the gender for the sentiment.
I mean, it's not as bad as getting a break-up speech for a romance you never had...
In TOR, there's an in-universe reason for it: there are several alien species that don't match human gender binaries, so "sir" is used as a wholly neutral term.

Yes, but why "sir" instead of "ma'am"? Because in English, masculine is often gender neutral, while feminine is distinctly other.

I'm excited but nervous. I associate PCs with locking up and blue screens of death... stuff that doesn't happen on my xbox

Congrats, and I sure hope that's not a problem! Is it under warranty, and is there a service center for your brand near you if it does have a problem? Mine's custom built which has its advantages and disadvantages, because I'm surrounded by family and friends who are heavily into computers (so am I, but I'm largely self-taught because of my age, so I have odd, large gaps in my knowledge that they find amusing

I know virtually nothing about fixing/building PCs, so I bought a pre-built one. Unfortunately we don't have any fancy stores like that where I live
I can usually figure things out by Googling... but it's just that the price of screwing up is so high; I accidentally delete this or that and suddenly my 900 dollar investment is down the drain! Scary!

I haven't touched my Xbox 360 in at least three years, and even that was just to take it apart to fix the RRoD issue, but I still use the controller for gaming on my PC. Some games just feel/work better with a controller instead of a mouse and keyboard.

Well I can't neglect my 360 as it has my beloved Dragon's Dogma on it
Plus the ME series, which I don't plan to rebuy since it doesn't have controller support. But along with DAI I will be buying Skyrim. SKYRIM MODS HERE I COME. BRYNJOLF WILL BE MINE!!!!

I would be happy with getting Serana...Bethesda was so cruel with *probably* the most fleshed out character they have ever created.

It's not so easy to screw up the software these days. But make sure you have it on a good surge protector (I had to spend several hundred dollars replacing most of the components in mine a couple of years ago when it turned out mine had already taken several hits and failed) and have good virus software.
