I'm not even interested in the lyrium addiction storyline, let alone how it can be incorporated into gameplay. Odd for a Cullen fan, I know.

I'm not either (says the girl who just wrote her first story about the subject). For all the reasons  mentioned, I don't really want to see one of our main characters go through that. Addictions stories are something I tend to personally avoid. 

 

Not really. The little we've seen about it I don't find it a very good plot point. I certainly don't think how they did red lyrium in DA2 did it any favors. I think it's only fair to be skeptical about about that plot in DAI considering how poorly it was handled in DA2. I just find it really weird you see red templars fighting alongside some massive mutated templar in the PAX demo. That really seems off.

...that being said... learning more about the red lyrium and how it works fascinates me. I would hope they'd explain a little why red lyrium could do something as subtle as what happened to Meredith over the years vs. create a massive abomination like the Behemoth. I like the mystery behind how it was, I dunno, worshipped(?) by the primeval thaig denizens. I want to know why the lyrium sings just like the Old Gods sing and just like the Abyssal Rift sings. There's some interesting connection there that I'm dying to know. So despite having no interest in an addiction storyline, I'm looking forward to more red lyrium storytelling.

Education, counseling, reassurance, and not telling young people that they are cursed by magic and that the Maker hates them?
 
I don't think the answer to any of those situations is "Here, have a lobotomy!" (You do know that in the early part of the 20th century lobotomies were used on the mentally ill.) But that is what makes the situation interesting from a narrative perspective.

It's not simply about education and anti-depression. Demon would whisper to mages regardless of this, the chance of becoming an abominations is present forever, and some mages have it worse than others, resulting in continues nightmares. It's not something you can solve.
I don't think the situation is the same as the mentally ills, and I don't think (I'm possibly wrong) that mentally ills were forced on lobotomy. The example I mentioned are voluntary.
I'm not saying that Tranquility is good. It's terrible, and I definitely wanted to remove it as punishment/forced. That said, if a mage know exactly what Tranquility is (as it could be after Asunder) he has every info for making a clear decision. And i don't think that mages should be stripped of the choice. Mages, unlike mentally ills, can't be restrained easily and would make massive damages in the case they fall for demons, and some of them might prefer to be lobotomized than become mass murderers.
Plus, Tranquils aren't completely lobotomized. They can defy orders and think on their own, as Asunder shown.

What the side effects or withdrawal symptoms are for the addiction? Or how long a Templar can go without Lyrium?

Evangeline, a Knight Captain, said that she'd have a week or two at most before she absolutely needed another dose of lyrium. The level of tolerance will probably vary between Templars, as will the withdrawal symptoms. But one thing seen is that the longer you take it, the worse the withdrawal symptoms will become, eventually leading to insanity.

So just saw this on tumblr. We've seen it a billion times, and I know it was from a pre-DA2 demo... but DAAAYAAM this sure looks a lot like DA:I. Even the shape of the GW dude is like the shape of the dude in the back of that cave pic with the pride demon.

Cullen watched as his love began to sag to the ground. He could tell what had happened, when he had begun closing the tear. He saw Jace lower his palm to the rift under the water, watched as the man was wreathed in a fell, grim light. As the tear inched towards closing, he could see the man tense up, and his face begin to contort in pain.

His heart tore, and came to stand beside the love of his life. He held the man tight, and watched in pain as Jace’s hand began to shake. And though he could see the unbearable pain wreak havoc on his love’s body, Jace never stopped. Not for one second did he remove the hand that was closing the rift. Solas and Varric came forward as well, giving silent support, nearly as pained to watch their friend suffer. The barge above the underwater rift rocked back and forth, a quiet sound that couldn’t break the silence of the long moment.

An unbidden sound came from Cullen’s throat as he watched the worst of the symptoms begin. Jase’s closed eyes began to leak blood, as did his nose. The strain must have been unbearable, and still Jase did not lift his hand. Cullen nearly pulled his love away from the rift, to spare him such pain. But only at the last second did he rein in his urges. He knew what had to be done. He remembered the words spoken to him the night before.

“Duty before all else,” Jace whispered to the man before him. “Always.”

Cullen couldn’t speak for fear of weeping before the strangely calm and peaceful man. Smaller hands grasped his, and brought his gaze down to meet emerald eyes, eyes filled with boundless love.

As the rift finally sealed, there was a flash of light and an echo of otherworldly thunder. It was finished. The fell green coruscation of light had fled back across the Veil, leaving this portion of the mortal world safe once again. But these were the furthest thoughts from Cullen’s mind. He only had eyes for the pain stricken form before him. Cullen held the now unconscious man to his breast, silent tears rolling down his face.

Varric and Solas began to row the barge back to the shore in silence, each pained beyond words. Cullen never stopped gazing at the man he held, even as he tried to gently wipe the ravaged face of Jace’s blood drawn sacrifice.

We have the power to help world, Cullen sadly mused. And yet it required such a terrible price in recompense.

 

 

And Vigil

Jace was unresponsive. Despite the combined healing magic of Vivienne, Solas, and Dorian, the man lying on the bed would not wake. Physically, it seemed, he had been healed of every malady. But the spirit...therein lay the problem. Cullen sat at his bedside, locked within a never ending vigil. He waited, stone-faced, his eyes never leaving the perfect face of his love. His heart whispered ceaseless prayers to the Maker above, pleading to not lose the man he had come to love above all else. He pleaded to see those emerald eyes gaze upon him once again.

 

Varric, ever the perceptive friend, made sure food was left in the room for Cullen, leaving the two alone. He also stood guard at the door, warning away advisors and commanders from the room with naught but a hard, merciless gaze. The normally jovial dwarf was in no mood for games. Even Hawke had never been hurt so badly.

 

For Cullen, time passed without awareness, so lost was he in his thoughts in memories. He thought of his experience in being violated in Ferelden, along with being transferred to the Gallows. The memories rushed behind his eyes, reliving the journeys he had taken in his life. How he had stormed out of the meeting in White Spire, taking with him every able-bodied Templar who chose to serve the Divine. How he had been introduced by Justinia to a tall, broad-shouldered mage with emerald eyes who managed to ensnare his heart.

 

Magic, he thought somewhat bitterly. Magic had brought the two together, and now...magic of the foulest sort was once again going to take away what he loved most in the world.

 

Without any warning, his heart seized, and a flood of tears began to poor out. He gripped Jace’s hand tightly, and began pleading in a quiet voice, “Please, Maker, bring him back to me.”

 

Outside the door, Varric slid to the ground, his own heart breaking in the wake of Cullen’s desperate pleas. It had been nearly a week with no change. He heard a sound to his right, and to his surprise, he found Vivienne standing there next to him. And in an uncharacteristic show of kindness and community, she sat down next to him on the cold, hard floor, for once disregarding the state of her clothes. She held out a hand silently, and he took her hand gratefully. And so, they sat in silence, listening to the pain of their friend behind the door.

Two days later, and Cullen was out of tears. He had worn himself out in his grief, and just felt so numb. His eyes were raw, and the normally vibrant hazel had dulled to a deep brown.

 

And so it was on the ninth day that Jace finally awoke. The light of the sun shone through the castle window, alighting upon the tanned face of the man lying comatose in bed. As the dawn’s light reached his eyes, there was the smallest of fluttering. Cullen’s heart began to race, before reaching a crescendo as the emerald eyes he so adored opened once again. The tired eyes turned to the man sitting beside him, and the smallest of smiles graced his battered face.

 

Cullen didn’t say a word. He gathered the man up in his arms, and held him with all his might. And now, tears of elation began to roll down his face, replacing the weariness brought about by despair.

 

Maker knows what would happen to them next, but in the here and now, Jace had come back to Cullen. And that was all that mattered.

 

And now, back to the research paper I have due tomorrow!

I wonder if the templars started using red lyrium after they broke away from the Chantry, and ran out of the usual stuff, but found that cave. Creepy. I just remembered how Bartrand went crazy, and what he did to his servants.
