Never gave that any thought - both are names that can be surnames, at least where I live.  It seems a bit odd.  My dad was in the army, and I can't see his CO calling him 'Gunner John'.  :)

You make a good point,  I always assumed the order used first names but they could be last names.  Do we ever hear any Templar's talk to Templar Carver? Depending on If they call him Hawke or Carver we'd have our answer.

Could be that they drop their last name when they join the chantry/templars? The priests are all referred to by first names, after all. Even though Cullen gets his last name back, presumably, after leaving the Templars, I could see him continuing just out of habit or to be more identifiable to those who already knew him.

There have been some specific attacks on the thread in the past.  The last I recall was a heap of disturbing pornography a while back.  A lot of the time though it's just idle chatter about how crazy, obsessive and embarrassing we are, I suppose casual contempt would be the best way to describe it.

I agree with Artemis, sometimes it's based on the assumption that we are female, casual gamers, interested in the game solely for romantic wish fulfilment  (although why this is deemed inherently inferior to power based wish fulfilment, is an interesting topic for argument alone).  Sometimes, it's based on the belief that Cullen is anti-mage and we are blinded to his obvious character defects because of our lust.

Part of the reason I was so drawn to the Cullen thread however, was because here I saw a group of self-identifying women and minority groups (although not wholly comprised of these people) interacting and speaking out about an aspect of gaming that was important to them.  Long before I experienced the warmth and enjoyment of participation with the group or understood that the thread wasn't the squee fest of my imagination, I believed that the vocal participation of these groups to any conversation about gaming was incredibly encouraging and I wanted it to continue.  :)

Meredith talks to him or says something about his sibling when the Qunari try to take over the city - can't remember her exact words tho.

Then again, Meredith is definitely her first name, so it's kind of a moot point now.  The military brat in me just finds it odd.  I've just taken my painkillers - I won't care in about 20 minutes' time!  :D

Not everyone had a last name in the Middle Ages. Maybe that's what they're going with?

Is it mean to say that? *shifty eyes* Especially with the other three knock out ladies in the room.

Riordan is a surname, but he's a Warden.  So is Murdoch, but he's a commoner.  There are plenty of noble surnames.  Wiki says:  'In Ferelden, nobles have proper last names, such as the Howes or the Couslands. Sometimes commoners will have last names that stem from noble lines, foreign origins, land ownership or titles granted to family members in the past.[28] Otherwise, most Fereldan commoners introduce themselves with a reference to the area they come from or to their trade, e.g. Gareth of Oswin or Lomo Kettlemaker.'

Maybe Templars do just drop their surname when they join up.

Kirrahe! I haven't had the opportunity before but just wanted to say it's great to have you back :]

As for the name, afaik most (if not all) Templars went by their first name.

Tsk, there's someone messing about outside my window - am so tempted to get one of my swords off the wall and scare the bejeesus out of him!  Except it's after 11 at night, so going outside, even with a sword, would not be such a good idea!

Meredith's last name is Stannard I think, but she's mostly referred to by her first. It would make more sense to me, as they're a military type organization, that they'd use surnames, but those all seem to be first.
Also, Kirrahe! I had no idea you were back! It's great to see you! :)

Meredith, Wesley, Carver, they're definitely first names. It's just the custom in this universe, even the city guards don't use their surnames - Aveline, Donnic, Brennan, Melindra. It's probably because DA is a medievalish setting where most people don't have surnames at all, specially the poor people who fill the most of military ranks.

Sometimes, it's based on the belief that Cullen is anti-mage and we are blinded to his obvious character defects because of our lust.

This is my favorite anti-Cullenite sentiment (though it's most prevalent on tumblr) - Cullen fans are awful because they're all evil anti-mage harlots.

Like... anyone who's spent five seconds in this thread knows most of Cullen's fans are actually super pro-mage?? Even the most pro-Templar ones likes me are at best moderates, middle of the road people, or don't really care one way or another. People have this image of us like we're carrying pitchforks and burning mages at the stake that's just... whaaat?

Same artist (lemon-kiss) also drew this gorgeous elf... which is close to the sort of guy I'd like to be able to construct in the CC but I dunno if it's possible. Solas does have a lovely face, I've noticed in the last couple trailers, so maybe those derpy pre-sets are just that, pre-sets.

Putting in spoilers b/c it's mildly gory, but he's a lovely 'un:

Hey Kaibe!  Yeah I'm back, life has resumed it's less hectic pace!  Annnnnd I totally forgot her last name was Stannard!  Maybe they use first names because a large number of Templar's might come from the orphanages and less wealthy families?

We've discussed this before... there are canonically templars referred to by their first names... and by their last names. It's inconsistent.

But historically a person with "sir" in front of his name would go by the first name.

Or maybe because they are sometimes used as a dumping ground for noble bastards?

I don't know that I'd say super pro-mage, but certainly not anti-mage. Nor are all Cullenites swooning over his looks. If they'd bother to read a little first, they'd know that.
