I know I for one am happy! Elf girl looks hella cute and we do have Cullen! Seeing him at all makes it more real. I would prefer he had full companion status, tis true. Primarily this is due to my belief that an NPC won't have as much of a story and I worry this will happen with Cullen, this making the fanservice accusations seem to have some merit. If he's in, I'd like to see him have some importance for being there and I guess I just don't yet fully believe that is possible with an NPC. I'm putting my faith in the devs though. But I think him being an NPC could also have some advantages. For one, the devs can use him and we get what we want without the players who hat him feeling to spurned at having him take up a precious LI slot. It's a compromise. And I'm all about compromises. Can't complain that I'm not getting everything I want if I argue in favor of compromises when it suits me.
Also, since the thread discussed the whole chain of command thing with Cullen being a problem and it is a legit concern, this is a way of getting around that. Cullen also makes sense as an advisor, much as I hate to admit it. Yes he can also stomp through the bushes with the PC but then he's just a number of your party and the player is calling the shots. Cullen, if he has any kind of position or clout wouldn't just be following the Inquisitor's orders. If he splits from the Templars and others join him, he could very well be in charge of a larger faction that the Inquisitor needs, much like Zathrian and the other heads of the different departments of your army in DAO. He could give the Inquisitor information regarding rogue Templars if they're more or less still tactically relevant to his experience as a knight despite the different lyrium. If he is such a wealth if knowledge and has big responsibilities, having him at my side - while nice - wouldn't make much practical sense.
