I'm not really sure, but I have a question regarding Dorian... He's from Tevinter, he is a magister (right?) and he wants to change what his homeland has become. Does that include the slavery of elves? Because if you're a Dalish, I think that you might take issue with a Tevinter Magister who comes from a country where enslaving elves is the norm. Kinda like Fenris. Now, if Dorian is against all of that, then I think a Dalish would be happy to be with him.

Clarification, they enslave everyone, not just elves. It honestly depends though. I could see it going either way on slavery and blood magic. That said, my gut feeling is he's against slavery but has or does utilize blood magic on occasion. A mage of his power couldn't have survived this long in Tevinter without being extremely, extremely gifted or utilizing blood magic.

I think he is an altus... or something....?

Yup, he's an Altus, not a magister. His family are the top tier in Tevinter. Altus families can trace their blood back to the Neromenian Dreamers of old, the first recorded human Dreamer mages in Thedas.

I don't dislike him, but I'm wary of him. Being a huge Fenris fan, anyone who's "proud" of being from Tevinter makes me nervous. On the other hand, if he weren't 100% anti-slavery, that could make an interesting conflict between him and my inquisitor(s). Especially if he's really blase about it (he seems to be pretty blase in general about everything). He almost seems like he takes life too lightly... but it's to be expected from someone who comes from the ruling class and had it all handed to him on a silver spoon.

So I think his character could be interesting and create lots of cool conflict (assuming he eventually realizes the error of his nation's ways).

Well, I think he's already aware of The problems in his country, based on What they said about him.

Except he already knows his country is pretty messed up, so there's no real "erro" for him to realize.

Fenris was biased against all Tevinter mages, though understandably so. We know certainly that not all Tevinter mages are as bad as he would paint them to be. Mae and Dorian certainly don't seem to fit his idea of what Tevinter mages are.

I even had inside information 'from a reliable source' that Cullen was going to be available to both male and female Inquisitors. Whether the source was given wrong info or something happened during the game's development we'll never know

Wow... if that were my friend... I would be introducing them to the back of my hand  j/k j/k of cousre. :P But yeah, it was a disappointment for some of us, but for you, that must have been devastating since you had "insider" info on Cullen being bi. How crippling.

I had similar hopes/beliefs regarding Blackwall and even tried to "pretend" I was certain he would be straight, so when he really was revealed as straight... I remember just staring at Mike Laidlaw's little list and blinking... I scrolled down, then back up again, and re-read it. It still said he was only interested in women. I could not believe it! I'm not blaming my "insider info" b/c like you we all thought it was good.

I love my Fen-bear ( ) too much to put aside old prejudices  I'm afraid dear Dorian is guilty until proven innocent in my eyes, but that's okay... just makes his story more potentially interesting :P

I haven't read the comics so don't know much about Mae. But didn't she also own slaves...?

Well, Fenris' bias was more about thinking that every Magister/mage will Fall to blood magic in Tevinter then them being all bad. If I recall he did say there were good mages in Tevinter.

I should probably read up on him more. But it seems like they've been pretty vague about what aspects of Tevinter culture he has a problem with.

"I have no doubt some are good and decent men" or something to that degree (bad writing in that case, should've said "men and women," but I distinctly recall him only saying men.)

Fair enough, though Bioware already said he wants to change his country, and today's video confirmed this as well, so he's aware of Tevinter's problems.

Yes, she does. But she was a good person, in my opinion. I guess my point was that even though she did have slaves, she evoked the notion of it being just a part of the culture she lived in. She certainly wasn't a cackling, mustache twirling blood mage like Danarius.

They didn't specify, no.

Yup, I was referring to that dialogue.

Oh I see. Whelp, owning slaves is a bit of a deal-breaker for me, no matter how "nice" you seem  I mean Scarlet O'Hara was nice :P But yeah come on, no one can be as bad as Danarius, ALTHOUGH keep in mind Dorian *gasp* ...also has a mustache

Dorian is a gifted mage from a powerful family. Born in a corrupt northern empire where mages rule, Dorian fights to redeem his homeland. Confident and in expert in arcane mysteries, Dorian brings an inside knowledge of those who stand against the Inquisition.

I see. Okay what do you think is meant by "redeem" here? I did a Google search (horrible, I know) and got: "compensate for the faults or bad aspects of (something)"

Now if that is what they really mean, it sounds to me like Dorian is aware of his nation's faults but wants to assure outsiders that Tevinter really isn't that bad. It doesn't necessarily sound like he wants to change or reform it.

Elu anticipated me.
The redeem part along with The corrupt part in the country's description leads me to think his problem will be with certain Tevinter traditions like slavery, or Magister's abuse of power.
Granted, he won't be perfect. There'll probably be Something of tevinter that he'll support.

Here:

[DG]: He doesn't believe that the situation in Tevinter is beyond repair, despite how impossible it seems that he personally might be able to do anything about it. Dorian has a streak of idealism hidden beneath his sarcasm, which naturally can lead him to be all the more disappointed when the world does exactly what he suspects it's going to.

I think he fights to change some of the worst parts about Tevinter and how it is perceived.

Also, Artemis, this is stated in his introduction:
With his magical ability, wit and charm, it would seem he would have had a promising career in Tevinter had Dorian not become a pariah for opposing everything his homeland stands for. Dorian bears his ostracism with pride as he feels Tevinter will only change if someone like him makes a difference
