Being a huge Fenris fan, anyone who's "proud" of being from Tevinter makes me nervous.
I'm a huuuuge sucker for Fenris, like, he's one of my favorite characters of the whole franchise, but - a lot of what he says needs to be taken with a mountain of salt, and the outsider perspective that his view of Tevinter is and will always be irreparably tainted by his awful life experiences. He has every right to see Tevinter through a blood-stained lens, I'd never dream of taking that away from him. He hates Tevinter hard, and I hate it twice as much for all it's done to him. But... it doesn't mean his clouded judgement corresponds to the whole reality of it.
Think of it like... when people from certain states or countries in the world say they're "proud to be from ______" even though that place is largely renowned to be full of awful racist, homophobic, misogynist people doing horrible things. That person is not necessarily saying they're proud to be from a place full of awful people - maybe they're proud of everything else in that place. The culture they were raised in, the unique customs they have, the food, the music, the art, the people who are not awful, the people there who are actually pretty great. There's a lot to love in the culture that raised you, even when there is also a lot of problematic stuff going on around you. I was born and raised in a state that's misogynist to the point of driving me to tears sometimes, in example, but I still love this place for everything else about it; and if you asked me, I'd say I'm pretty proud to be from here - because there are awful things here that shame and hurt me, but then there are also so many other greats things to be proud of, and I wouldn't trade them for the world.
So I get Dorian, in that sense. You love the place you call home, even if home is a dinky shack full of nasty roaches scaring your friends away. You desperately want to clean it up and make it a better place for everyone to live in, and maybe you know you can't do it on your own because the infestation runs too far and too deep and you'd probably have to nuke the entire block from orbit and rebuild it from the ashes before you root out the last one of the nasties, but you do what you can. And at the end of the day, your home is your home, and you'll be damned if anyone gets to hate it more than you do.
....the metaphor got a little away from me at the end, but you get it.
