Sigh. I get that the guy on the stream was a bit of a jerk, but I hope he doesn't get in big trouble with Mike due to that.

Yeah, same here. He looked and said he was nervous and I don't think he meant to be condescending but I guess it's better to point things out?

Something similar happened to a friend who made a bad joke at the wrong time about a group of people. Almost lost his job.

It's ok to point things out, but I hope that he doesn't have to suffer for it.

Plus, why not tweet him directly, instead of going all the way up to Mike?

Red heads are sexier! Plus, Elsa doesn't want no man!

Oh, I was joking, I didn't mean to make a cocaine joke so carelessly. It's my go-to "addiction" joke.

I almost thought of making a human female rouge named Elizabeth just so I could call Cullen Mr. Darcy.

I doubt he will. It didn't seem mean-spirited, just kind of a cheap shot. And ML's other replies (not shown above) sort of come off as "huh, didn't realize that bugged you guys, we mean well when we do that but I'll try to avoid it in the future."

So I'm doing an "All About That Bass" remix for Dragon Age. It's for MD and this is what I have so far, lol!

Because you know she's all about that Beef, 'bout that Beef no Cullen!

I saw this on twitter, and we talked about it for a little, but I didn't realize it was you! Bravo it's literally perfect.

For those that were bothered by the Cullen fan impersonation in the Monday stream:

user #1

@Mike_Laidlaw @Cameron__Lee would yall like to stop mocking fangirls in yr livestreams bc it's disrespectful af 1/2

Do you have an example? I sure don’t want to mock anyone.

@Mike_Laidlaw The "impersonation" of a Cullen fan during the Skyhold Monday stream was... weird.

Ah. Haven't seen it. Apologies on behalf of DA if it was mean-spirited.

user #2

@Mike_Laidlaw Thanks for listening. I don't think it was mean-spirited, just... ill-considered?

Ha! Sadly, those two share a postal code, so you have to be very careful.

I actually found the impersonation hilarious?
Because it was honestly true.

"I'm gonna go find Cullen"
*INNER SQUEALING*

I can't be angry about something that pin-pointed me so perfectly.
Every time they mention them in the streams, I manage to laugh at myself.
It's all in good fun.

Honestly, I laughed at the fangirl impression. I laughed again- when after putting all those wonder mounts in the game, he had to read the words saying people wanted the bear as a mount.  Karma enough, I think.

It is important to let them know this bothers us, or... at least some of us. I was more than a little bothered by that thing in the stream myself, but it's not so much about that one specific guy as much as it is the endless stream of little aggressions. From Gaider being so unnecessarily hostile whenever people talk about Alistair because fangirls are apparently so awful to talk to, to the whole "sigh Cullenites" attitude, to the whole "squeeing fangirls" act. We're being laughed at, not with, and for some of us it's getting pretty old and difficult to ignore.

In any case, I don't think it will come to the guy getting in trouble or anything, they'll just maybe be more attentive to things that sometimes fly over everyone's head, like mocking your fanbase and not realizing they're not finding it all that funny. Worse offenses have been done against fans by other devs, and they got a slap in the wrist and learned to be more respectful, but no one's ever been fired over a poor joke. Even Chris Priestly never got that much overreaction, and he sure did his lot to deserve it back in the old ME forums.

I'm going to take the benefit of the doubt and say that he didn't mean anything hurtful by what he said. Its better to assume that than to get our feathers ruffled over it.

Not sure how long either of you have been in the Cullen fandom, but it's not so funny when you get mocked for being a screaming raging hormonal fangirl (even if you are none of those things) constantly for years and years, and even by the devs at times.

I didn't get a negative sense from the comment.  I thought it was more a wink to the fact they were aware of our slavish devotion to the character.  I think it can be easy to read offense into something where none was intended.  I don't like to think of someone being in trouble for trying to be funny and casual with their fan base.  I think Bioware has been pretty good to the Cullen fans and they have earned more good will than this behaviour suggests.   :)

Agreed. I didn't see anything offensive enough to say anything to the devs. But hey, I've been to parts of the internet that require thick skin in order to survive. Guess I just tend not to even notice offensiveness if it does occur.

I would kind of mock a screaming raging hormonal fangirl myself.
I must be out of my "true fangirl" phase if I'm not completely worked up by fictional characters.

They're attractive. They're lovable, and yes, I may even cover my walls from ceiling to floor of them,
but I will never be offended by anyone picking at me for doing so, especially if that's exactly what I'm doing.

I can't deny how I act. I don't see why I would be bothered by someone bringing it up as a joke.
I even joke on myself with my husband. I'm rarely offended by anything of the sort, and I've been an addictive
fangirl to many things, not merely Cullen and his charming smirk.

I have a question that's semi off topic but...

How much of a role do you think Alistair will play in DAI? I'm having a really hard time deciding if I should import my save with my warden on the throne or go with the mage origin to get a juicer backstory from Cullen... Any suggestions?

Looking at the layout of Skyhold from that video, I'm thinking that Cullen will need to come to my Inquisitor's room and not the other way around.  It avoids climbing the ladder (my Teveylan isn't one for jumping or swinging off the battlements to get there via the alternate route) and, unless there is an interior passageway they didn't show, that is a lot of open ground to get from one room to the other.  Cullen can be a gentleman and make the hike.  :P

Make both!

It's tough to say with Alistair. They could cater to the fans and make a larger role,

or it could simply be an appearance like in Awakening or DA2.

*sighs* Again, not sure how long some of the newbies who are suddenly posting here have actually been a part of the Cullen fandom, but... it has long been an issue we've had to deal with. We've been ridiculed; we've been called crazy; we've been told we only like the character because we're all female and hormonal.

It is not always intentionally offensive or sexist, but it's buying into the behavior without realizing it.

Obviously the sweet guy in the video was not trying to be mean. But it's totally important, imo, that someone alerted the BioWare devs that persistently buying into this belief about female fans, even jokingly, of male characters is damaging to their fanbase.

DAI won't be importing any of your saves, so you can decide via the Dragon Age Keep what you want your world state to be.  I would go with the mage origin for one where you want to see if that gives you more insight into Cullen and you could do a later play through with your Warden on the throne as part of the world state for that subsequent PT.

I was a little bothered by the squee-ing fan girl impression, but was prepared to overlook it as the awkward bad joke of a nervous dev who usually doesn't get screen-time with us fans. I'm glad someone brought it up, though, because it really is something that they should be more conscious and respectful about. I mean, I know there are lots of guys (and ladies!) who are head over heels for Morrigan, or Isabella, or Josie, but I've never seen anyone do an squealing fanBOY impression, y'know? The response was a little gendered in my opinion. And that gets old.

Speaking of Alistair:

Spoiler

Man, a whole different world, that's for sure. Trying to think now... how DID I communicate with people? Did I actually talk on the phone? Or just not communicate? Ah, I remember! Yeah, those smoke signals were a little slow. And, the dinosaurs could see them for miles around.

Pfft, if your birth year wasn't before the early 1960s, I'm calling you on that one. :P

I wouldn't; there's nothing wrong with being a young girl and having desires. I might chuckle, but I would not mock them.

That said, you've just proved my point. This fandom is NOT made up of screaming raging hormonal fangirls. But it is persistently represented as such. As someone pointed out, they are not laughing with us, they are laughing at us. (And you, maybe, if you're a Cullen fan.)

It's general mockery of female fans. It's downplaying their interest in video games and even mocking their desires.

I mean I would love to see a dev make the wanking motion when Morrigan or Leliana appears on the screen, but I highly doubt that's going to happen. Because male desire and male interest in video games is respected by the industry.

I could be equally offended by the fact that you're judging our relationship with the fandom based on how long we've been formally apart of the forums... but I'm choosing to believe that you didn't mean that in an insulting way just like the dev wasn't trying to be hurtful.

As I mentioned, have you been a fangirl of anything besides Cullen? It happens.
You learn to realize what true ridicule is and what's meant more as a joke.
My being new to this forum has nothing to do with how long my interests have been with anything.

If he meant no harm, and you understand that, why make it a bigger deal than it is?
Of course, I'm only speaking about these current streams. I'm not accounting for anything in the past.
