I think it started out as a web thing, but you don't need to sign up. It can be something you just do for yourself for the sake of doing it/sake of being able to say you tried/did it. There is a website for it though, here, and it helps you track your progress and stuff. I think there are prizes for finishing, assuming you sign up, because I know a girl who won and her prize was that she got to have 20 copies of her finished novel published or something like that. There aren't chosen winners or anything either, you win when you manage to write and finish 50,000 words by 11:59 on November 30th. So everyone who makes the goal gets a prize, I think.

I've never ever signed up though. It's always been something I've just started on my own, and I only found out about the prizes and stuff last year. :S And I know some people who have done NaNoWriMo but not in November. The rules are pretty much just write and finish 50,000 in one month, basically. :S

Cool, I might actually try this. It'll give me incentive to get all the scenarios I got floating around in my head down on paper.  They always sound better in my head so I never write them down, it may help.

Ha! I just said something similar ;) I am really leaning towards minor nobility. If you can go by anything in HoDA one of the groups he's listed as being part of is Fereldan, so maybe minor nobility from the Bannorn... kinda like Gilmore? Maybe a younger son?

Personally,I always prefer underdog backgrounds but Cullen as a character was shaped because of his experience as a templar.
So yeah I'm kind of liking the idea of him being a minor noble of some kind, who knows perhaps his family was quitereligious like the Trevelyans and they encouraged him to serve the chantry as a templar.
Either way can't wait to learn more!

So Cullen practiced chess a lot. In medieval-ish settings, isn't chess more of a high-class game? So this could mean Cullen is from a noble family.

Precisely so!And if not nobility I'd say that his family was rather wealthy. But yeah I'd bet he's a noble or something.

What is it with BioWare and chess though? I wonder if they threw that in since one of the Inquisitor's voices also voiced Traynor in ME3? Lol.

I was half expecting a pseudo Tarentino moment like there was in the Citadel scene with Traynor and her arch-nemesis because of the chess :S

"Prepare the board, Commander!" *dramatic zoom in on narrowed eyes* "You're on!"

I was a little bothered by the squee-ing fan girl impression, but was prepared to overlook it as the awkward bad joke of a nervous dev who usually doesn't get screen-time with us fans. I'm glad someone brought it up, though, because it really is something that they should be more conscious and respectful about. I mean, I know there are lots of guys (and ladies!) who are head over heels for Morrigan, or Isabella, or Josie, but I've never seen anyone do an squealing fanBOY impression, y'know? The response was a little gendered in my opinion. And that gets old.

Yeah, I'm 53 years of age, so hardly a girl, and I've been putting up with variations of that rubbish since before that dev was born!  Pointing out that it causes offence is the only way to get things changed.  I wouldn't want him to get into serious trouble tho, just for someone to have a quiet word in his shell-like.

Right!?

Although if it did, I'd probably be too flabbergasted to continue with the scene. I'd be just like, "Huh!?

I understand how some are taking offence at this but Mike Laidlaw has done it Cameron Lee did it and this man is the only one getting flak for his part? If it offends of course bring it up but to single one person cause the others are more well known and endearing? So it's more acceptable? Doesn't seem fair.

Cullen having a bro and sis kinda reminds me of Anomen (who had a sis) back in the days of BG2.. >.> I hope IF (a big fat IF) we get some kind of personal mission regarding his family, it won't end up anything like the Delryn's >.<

Judging from how fondly he remembers them, they must be a nice and warm bunch =) would be cool to meet them and get varying response depending on your relationship status and race.

So, in one of the videos lately they mentioned that there was no customization of the Quizzy's casual outfit.  Do you think this means that every race will have a modified version of the sort of black-sock-in-with-the-whites coloured pant suit we saw or do you think they might have a completely different outfit and that would just be the HF mage version?  At any rate, I fear my desire to swan around the castle in something glamorous isn't going to be fulfilled this game around.   :(

For the first 30 seconds or so of that vid, I actually thought that she was naked!  The outfit is bearable, but it needs to be a different colour/colours.

Oh man, I forgot to mention! So, at this DAI The Show tournament there was this guy that helped out with the events, and I swear he genuinely looked like a slightly younger version of Cullen's new DAI model without the stubble/goatee! (He was in a medieval outfit too!) He had the chiseled jawline and everything! Only difference was that his eyes were the wrong colour. There was also a dude that looked like a shorter version of Dorian, right down to the haircut, but he didn't have the 'tache. There was also a dude on one of the teams who looked like Imhotep from The Mummy... so plenty of eye candy!

It was one of the things that you learned as part of your training as a squire - apart from the obvious swordplay/jousting stuff, the household you were sent to would train you in stuff like dancing, poetry and chess.  They are the mark of a noble gentleman.  It might not be exactly the same in thedas, mind you.

It did seem to hint at a possible reunion... I wonder if his brother looks like him?   Would be nice to have them reunite, especially with this whole breach thing that could literally spell the end of the world/Thedas if the Inquisitor screws this up!

Minor drama here this morning lol, I was outside talking with a neighbour for about 10mins, came indoors, made a cuppa, sat down to watch a wee bit of morning tv, did the washing up and such then ........omg, where is the dog??? calling him, checked all his normal haunts in the house, no sign.....PANIC..outside, walking up and down, knocked on the neighbours door, nope she hadn't seen him either......OMFG I felt ill, he's a huge golden lab, everyone knows him, how could I have lost him? real horrid stomach flips, back indoors, upstairs to the loo......big ass comes meandering out of the spare bedroom, he'd been up on the bed, he NEVER, ever goes upstairs, honestly I don't know whether to laugh or cry right now, I'm so relieved yet so mad lol he's giving me the *shrug* "whats your problem?" look atm

Welcome to our newest de-lurkers! & welcome back Lola & DA Fan, was following your tweets, your selfies tell me you guys had a blast! can't wait to see what happens :)

Do you guys remember the old Atari tv gaming system? Tennis anyone |   .   |   <-- that represented your chars and the ball :D Then I moved up in the world to a Sinclair Spectrum 48k lol I'm a total technophobe now though, I don't even own a mobile phone (partly as we get very little to no reception where I live, my mum had to make an important call once and had to go to the end of the pier in my village, she got a reception alright but it connected internationally to the Isle of Man  ).

I love the idea that Cullen is minor nobility, it would fit with him quite nicely from what little we know. It would be nice to think that he had a relatively stable childhood. I wonder how he came to the Templars, do we know yet if he chose to? or was it a Sebastian type thing with the "heir and the spare" so Cullen was kind of forced into the Templars so as not to compete.

Pong!  And the Sinclair - we must be about the same age!  :D  I tried once explaining to my 2 youngest sisters about a world with no computers and black and white telly - they looked at me like I was raving!

Cullen did say that he always wanted to be a knight - but didn't specify if that was a Knight Templar, or just to take up the knighthood that someone from minor/not-so-minor nobility would be part of.  If the lyrium addiction that Templars face is known about, why would anyone volunteer to be one of them?  Or is it hidden, like the Wardens' Joining?  So many questions!

They said it was about mid-game at that point, right?

Sounded like that particular Inquisitor hadn't done too much friendly socialising with him judging by what he said about it being the longest they'd gone without talking about the Inquisition or work related stuff. He did seem a little flirty, didn't he? And Dorian's reaction to Cullen jumping up from the chess board seemed to hint at the fact, LOL! Bless him.

They said that is the only Skyhold casual outfit, but they also said that the colours of the Inquisition were changeable by us in one of their vids where they showed different combos...if we change from default inquisition that makes out early armour fabric and clothing beige...there might be other colours? I don't know, but would be very happy if true.

Can't speak for everyone, but I have complained to Laidlaw and anyone else who I've caught coming out with similar stuff.  Saying it in the increasingly frantic build-up to a highly anticipated new game was spectacularly bad timing for him, unfortunately.  But I do wonder if the younger devs hear that description of female fans of anything/anyone so often that they genuinely think it's not annoying anyone.  No harm in telling them that this is not the case.  I didn't see anyone calling for the guy to be sacked or anything.
