I think it started out as a web thing, but you don't need to sign up. It can be something you just do for yourself for the sake of doing it/sake of being able to say you tried/did it. There is a website for it though, here, and it helps you track your progress and stuff. I think there are prizes for finishing, assuming you sign up, because I know a girl who won and her prize was that she got to have 20 copies of her finished novel published or something like that. There aren't chosen winners or anything either, you win when you manage to write and finish 50,000 words by 11:59 on November 30th. So everyone who makes the goal gets a prize, I think.
I've never ever signed up though. It's always been something I've just started on my own, and I only found out about the prizes and stuff last year. :S And I know some people who have done NaNoWriMo but not in November. The rules are pretty much just write and finish 50,000 in one month, basically. :S
Cool, I might actually try this. It'll give me incentive to get all the scenarios I got floating around in my head down on paper. They always sound better in my head so I never write them down, it may help.
