Hey all, I'm writing an article about Cullen's rise from cameo player in DA:O to love interest in DA:I and I'd like to interview some of you if possible. Basically it's going to examine what causes a "fan favorite" like, say, Boba Fett to move beyond what the creators originally intended due to fan interest. It's going to be a respectful treatment -- I'm not going to be like "lol look at these weirdos" because that'd be a jerk move and lord knows I was all about Jaheira back in the day. Shoot me a PM if you're interested.

For whatever it's worth, Cullen's role upgrades weren't "due to fan interest". I think DG said it was a (helping but non-deciding) factor in making him one of the add-on romances with the extra year, but they've repeatedly reminded the BSN that the DA writing team does what they feel is best for the story, not for the fans.
EDIT: This isn't intended as an attack, by the way! But Cullen fans get a lot of "ugh your crush on that stupid templar forced Bioware to keep putting him back in my games even though he sucks and should die", so it would be nice if you could avoid implying that our interest in him is why he's in DA:I.

Doesn't matter, haters will just declare "FANSERVICE" just by Gaider's claim.

Well I think fan interest "helped" propel his character along at times ^^ And I don't think Pattonesque really implied more than that, so I'm cool with his/her question. And I actually find the idea intriguing on an academic level... I am almost jealous I didn't think of this topic first, lol!

I think it may be more along the lines of the writers liking Cullen for the same reason the fans do - they found him interesting ![]()

Fan interest in a character can be good... look at how fans were asking for so long to have a film all about the only female Avenger... and now she is finally getting her own film!

Plus the Captain Marvel rumor mill, and Mockingbird in Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D. Exciting things are happening! (Though it does bug me that we've only seen a total of three brown people who weren't extras. One's a major villian in SHEILD, one's a now-dead Councillor and the last one was a cameo about a tech assistant)...

It actually intrigues me whether they had already planned Cullen to have "bigger role" in DA:I since the making DA2? Or does he have his current "advisor" role now just because he's the one whose story fit the specification for the new character in that position?

Why is it every time I watch the advisor video, I break into a sweat and keep repeating "God, he's so beautiful!"? Have I truly lost my mind?

Ah, true. I'm sure we all want to see a more diverse cast in movies, and not just the principle characters. In real life, when I look around me, I see all kinds of people, not just white males!

Little of both perhaps? He was there and he made sense, and people loved him... that probably sparked the possibility.

No, and you're not the only one.
I squeal literally everytime I saw him on released video and only focus on him. And didn't notice everything else. Like, when I saw that Enemy of Thedas trailer, I didn't see anything else after the Cullen scenes.
If I continue like this soon I'll have my boyfriend protesting, just like back there during Fenris & Alistair moments... Sigh...

That's one of good thing I really like in Dragon age: your character is basically a super hero (except Hawke, (s)he's awesome but not super hero material) and can be of any race.

At the moment I'm just happy there is going to be Deadpool movie but I'd love to see more female superheroes getting movies as well and more diverse casts would be always good thing.

It's not just you
. But you do have the Falcon, and the War Machine/Iron Patriot/Whatever-he's-being-called-this-week!
My problem is that often in Western Media, having some black people and some white people is considered more than racially diverse enough. Which is patently false. There are First Nations, Australian Aboriginals, 'Asian' and yes Brown. Brown people are also often total background or villians, which drives me nuts. Especially since the current Ms. Marvel is a Pakistani Muslim woman and badass. And, it should be noted that portrayals of brown men have often been more violent and evil than brown women. The majority of positive brown characters in Marvel Comics are women...
Anyway, I'm going to stop derailing the thread.
