There was this from an interview a few days ago:

Spoiler

So apparently this decision is a lot more involved than we'd initially figured, and there's no safe third option.

Though I still personally think this won't have the overarching impact some people expect, such as being able to free all mages forever, unless it's done by the Hand of Plot. Gaider's said before that they learned their lesson from the OGB/Sacrifice mess and won't be fracturing the world into two completely irreconcilable states again. We'll probably see the impact of this choice throughout this game's story depending on who you side with at the beginning, but in the end the plot will reconcile everything back into one consistent track that can be carried forward with minimal conflict, the way DA2's ending did.

At the very least, I think in some manner, it will determine who you fight more of in the games enemies.

Crap!  Now this hard!  i didn't realize how big that decision would be. I wanted to save the mage playthough for my second once (in which case, of course I will side with the mages).  To get a new experience, i suppose I will side with templars in my first as a human noble rouge.  But I am not a chantry fan...so...crap!  I will have to play at least THREE playtrhoughs now, just as a human.  Then all the other races...

Sigh...I will have no life because of this game!!!

In any case he still have lots of hope & pride with Templars. At one of the Gameplay (the Dalish elf lady meeting the advisor for the first time) he still proudly says that he knows what the templar can do (in a proud way).

Ooh interesting, i thought he said that bit with total contempt not pride. Always interesting to hear other perspectives ;)

Neither am I! This is going to be so hard. I do plan on siding with both at some point, but who to side with for my first PT?

Yup, and yup. The on

Lol, I knew that suggesting Samson get reinstated in DA:2 would come back to bite me in the ass at some point. The one on the left isn't looking 100%.

Wait we have to choose sides again??? I thought the devs said before that they are not "forcing" you to choose sides if you don't want too... did that idea got scrapped or something?

It really depends on who I feel makes the best argument. Normally I'd pick mages, but I absolutely loathe their leadership at the moment.

Well, I'm not sure about this part. My Eengleesh is very bad due to overeating of stinky cheese. Ok, joke a part, it can be both... Not sure.

Well I am going to choose based on my own roleplaying...I need more information....so I need DAI now!

My Trevelyan warrior starts pretty pro-Templar because of her family.

My Dalish mage is pretty pro-mage because she's used to the responsible use of magic.

My Dwarven rogue, is pretty neutral and very pragmatic.

I can't wait to see where the journey is going to take them!

Both sides have so many faults. I kind of feel like that no matter what I will just be picking the lesser "evil" rather than actually solving the conflict in a constructive way. But you're right, for me as well it will come down to who makes the better argument. I just hope that no matter what side we pick we can still ferret out the bad ones in our chosen faction.

Now, that would be a really interesting twist. Stop putting awesome ideas in my head, I'll be so disappointed if it doesn't happen like that now!

For what it's worth it, the Templars aren't very hot on the Chantry right now either. They've been the equivalent of stabbed in the back and left to bleed out in the gutter by the Divine, so relations between the Chantry and the Templar Order aren't very... cosy. Cullen's sort of amused dismissiveness of the Chantry beeswax in that one clip we saw seemed kinda telling of how even the still loyal branch of the Templars may not think too highly of their mother arm these days.

Interesting, I though he was scathing about the Chantry, but proud of having been a Templar...they have been very clever with the voice acting :)

Indeed. I need to see for myself how both are conducting themselves at the moment, then I'll choose. I honestly can see myself siding with either group.

I think it is more of a case where you are choosing who you will work with in the Inquisition. Do you want the mages help or do you want the templars? Kind of thing. Devs have stated that the actual mage/templar conflict will be solved quite early on in the game, if I recall correctly. But have never given hints on how you would go about doing that.

Guess it depends on which leader is the lesser evil.
