Shame if it's the Evil Mages vs Red Templars. I had hoped the faction choices would look something like this:
Chantry Loyalist Templars - Moderate Mages
Rebel Templars - Radical Mages
Red Templars - Venatori
Where you can either get a L shape allies made up of moderate mages, chantry loyalists and rebels, or 3 in a row like moderates, radicals and Venatori.
Maybe it's that the Rebel Templars later become the Red Templars if we side with the mages, and the red lyrium is only being experimented with at this stage and can be stopped. Likewise, siding with the Templars pushes the Radicals into the arms of the Venatori, making them into a major threat.
This is sort of what I was hoping. I'd honestly be surprised if your choice early on is between two obviously mustache twirling factions, like extreme blood mages vs. red templars. I think we may all be jumping to conclusions based on one image that shows a red templar with samson as THE "templar faction." It could mean templars include red templars, or it could be a mistake or misleading in someway we haven't been told yet.
FWIW, in the Hinterlands areas when we're fighting templars, they're all just called "templars" when you fight them, and no red lyrium necklaces. In contrast, when we saw red templars in the earlier pax demo around the town that starts with a C that I can't remember... those baddies were actually called "red templars." So there still could be a big difference between the two. I think until we play, we won't really know.
Don't lose faith that our choices won't matter! That's been their mantra so far in making this game.
