Not true!  My boyfriend studies it and reads Beowulf to me in Old English.  My "obsession" is with his sexy voice when he does it. It is how he wooed me!!!

To be fair...I don't understand a word of it.  But all those W's...yowza!!

Being annoying nerd person to point out that no one here could probably understand actual "Old English" (language of Beowulf) :D

*Raises hand slightly*

Well, I know a bit of the written stuff, provided it's got a few words that've survived the last 1000 years relatively unchanged to allow me to translate it? I'm good when it comes to most written languages, I tend to read the foreign language versions of guide books on holiday simply because I enjoy figuring the language out.

Speaking them on the other hand... can't do that for my life!

Oh, is it Middle?  I thought Middle was like Canterbury Tales...

It is. I'm just voicing my preference for it.

Aww...gotcha!  At least Middle is somewhat decipherable!  I could maybe read it...after a little practice.  But not Old...I don't have the necessary deep voice that makes it sound awesome!!

It's really not that bad. It's just knowing when to pretend some letters aren't there and when to switch around words. :P This may sound horrible, but if my friend can read it reasonably well and get the gist, it shouldn't be too bad.

My life for a recording of one of Tolkein's lectures on Beowulf... I'd love to hear him recite it! My older sister does a good job when she does some recitals of Old English, and the Canterbury Tales are really fun to read aloud. ^_^

What?! So you have to say two weeks?! That's MADDENING!

I know, tis mental as you folk would say

Well I can't say as I've ever had reason to refer to two weeks' time. Why not a word for three weeks? Four weeks? Okay there's a month for that. :P

Oh god. We read one of his poems last year. The whole class was giggling and I didn't understand why, and then it suddenly dawned on me what he was actually banging on about. I went bright red and had to hide my face for the rest of the lesson! It's really not for me! I had so many problems with poetry. There was literally one guy I actually liked.

*snip*

 I'll take it! I really liked that! Tolkein definitely has more... musicality in the way he speaks Elvish than in the way T.S Eliot recites Prufrock. -_- Eliot sounds very dry and bored there. Although I suppose that works, because it's Prufrock. But I'm very biased- I like the way I recite Prufrock more. I wrote a really long research paper on The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock so I have a lot of really strong opinions about it >.>

I found out last year that one of my professors actually got to attend one of Tolkein's lectures on Beowulf. SO jealous!

Oh I couldn't remember, are some of the words recognizable? I'm so not an expert on this time period lol and don't pretend to be >.> I wouldn't even teach it cause I know nothing.

I like languages, too ^^ I wouldn't say I'm very good at learning them. Only language I ever learned was Latin, and I've mostly forgotten it :( I hear French around me quite often because of where I live, but I can't speak it, which sucks.

Ah, truly? I could've sworn I've heard those troublesome colonials use it in one of their serial dramas or situational comedies.

I've never heard it used normally in the states.

Hahha!  Yes, that must be it!!  I am American but from the Appalachians, so we all talk really antiquated-like and hillbilly-ish.  My best friends through life have been British, Irish, and Singaporian...so i have picked up the British lilt at the end of my sentences as well as some words and phrases.  On top of that, I am obsessed with Old English. SO,  basically, when I talk, no one knows where the hell I am from and it wounds really wacky... :D

Hmm, I'm Appalachian (or grew up there) too, but I've never heard it used except by people doing historical recreations (or in performances).

Wow! And that's the first poem that came up?  :P That actually is kinda perfect. Pablo Neruda was a beautiful wordsmith. My favourite poem of his is Every Day You Play.

Edit: sorry broken spoiler tag! fixed it :S

I LOVE THAT POEM!! You should post one of you reading it!!!

Tolkien is my favorite poet of all time. *note my tagline" :)

I love all the Rohan stuff...it was obviously what he loved most to write, being a Beowulf expert and all.  I love the one he wrote that is like The Wanderer (ie, where is the horse gone, where is the rider...).  The Wanderer hangs above my desk, and all my fellow scientist friends always look at it and then me like I am a complete weirdo!!! Tee hee!
