This is really interesting, and i like the fact that you are trying to preserve your kid's innocence in regards to moral and ethical choices. Creating ones own value system is without ta doubt the most difficult and painful part of growing up (at least it was for me...losing my religion at 12 was a very profound chnage in my life). My parents didn't have a strong moral compass for me to follow (they weren't bad people...just uneducated and both from very abusive and impoverished backgrounds, so they were kind working on themselves as I was growing up). So, most of my value system came from books and my teachers at school. If a video game like this had been around and I had played it, I wonder how it would have affected me? Something to ponder...
Considering that...I wonder...isn't 15 or so the age when they are getting exposed to pretty heavy stuff in their school curriculum? I can't remember exactly, but I am pretty sure we were reading Lord of the Flies in 8th grade. I remember watching Schindler's list in 9th grade history.
I was reading far worse, actually. The difference, like I said earlier, is that a tome, or a movie, or a show on tv doesn't have you choosing some course of the story that challenges your own personal moral compass. You're watching someone else's choices play out, and trying to derive a lesson from it. A video game like these ones ask you to choose the course for yourself, rather. My kids aren't yet prepared to figure out why and how it can be interesting to play at being ruthless and cruel a character, not when they're still trying to understand what it means to be good people firstly.
And my own fifteen year-old is just that sensitive, in particular. Or immature might be a better word, I don't know.
Sorry to keep responding to this, but i just had a really powerful memory sneak up on me. I grew up in very rural area. The faculty at our school made a little wall of "religions around the word" and put in the hall at school. So there were pictures of mosques, churches, etc. I remember one of my classmates crying in class, actually crying uncontrollably, because he thought the faculty were trying to convert christian kids to Islam. As the "token atheist", he considered me like a spawn of satan or something (alot of the kids did). But I remember feeling so bad for him because he was so upset and trying to comfort him and trying to explain how he needed to be tolerant of other people's faith and how he could still hold on to his, etc. But I didn't have the WORDS to explain what I meant (ie, as you siad, the subtle nuances) and it was so frustrating!. I remember him forcibly shoving my arm away from him and saying that I was trying to corrupt him. Then I was crying.
It was a weird time.
It was a heavy scene, but I remember how confusing it was for all of us. And we were 15. So...I guess the point of sharing this memory is that 15 is a weird age. Kids aren't as mature as we think they are, alot of times. They try to be, but they have a lot to learn...
So...I really respect your view on this. If that makes any sense!
I think we sometimes fool ourselves into thinking because movies and shows demonstrate such subjects so normally, that our kids simply "get it". But they don't, not really. You're right.
I'd say 13 is definitely a transitional age. But from what I can gather from friends who teach at middle schools and high schools, there's quite a bit of sex already going on by 14 or 15 (including a lot of kids whose parents are firmly convinced would never do so - I live in the Bible belt). Which isn't, frankly, that different from 40 years ago when I was a teen, they were just a lot more secretive about it - I was so quiet then that people constantly said things in front of me, forgetting I was there (or maybe that I could talk
).
Every parent has to decide what he or she is comfortable with and what works for them and their family. If there had been games with content like the DA games when mine were teens, I personally would probably have weighed the way romance is portrayed in the games (which is generally respectful and generally ends with love if successful) against what they might find on some of the graphic web sites that were already springing up, and I'd have taken individual age and maturity into account (and the likelihood that my child would still see the material away from home). I think timebean actually raises a more complicated concern for a younger teen, the fact they're often already confused and questioning religion and society, and these games wander into some complicated subjects without easy answers.
This. For now, I'm more comfortable with the fact my daughters approach me and ask, about a story they've read or a show they've watched. When they're ready, I'll let them delve into character creation, even of those characters who's alignments tend towards more questionable directions.

So I completed the pre-load and whined over the still greyed out button that winks the word "play" at me. I figured I'd stop torturing myself and shut Origin down. Only then realized that the download included a shortcut button on my desktop that includes a pretty green sword that winks at me to say "dragon age inquisition".
Argh!

It took me like five minutes to find a nice spot for the icon on my desktop. Then I stared at it and cried a little.

On the topic, I have been trying to not let my little brother who is 15 to play my 18+ games yet. He has played some like the Reckoning: Kingdoms of Amalur and Skyrim but I try to keep him out from heavy subjects like DA and ME series. Luckily he haven't been that intrested.
I have only my own experiences to go for but for me 18+ would have been too heavy to play at that age. I wasn't exposed to many things in that age and I doubt my brother is either. I don't think it will do any good having exposed to all sexual and violent things on that age rather than that I believe it will do dmg more than good. There is quite many quite disturbed kids who have played games like GTA at young age, killing people there and sleeping with hookers.. it really hasn't teached them any good or limits between reality and fantasy.
One reason could be also that in Finland the age restrictions aren't recommendations. I have heard that they are in US. In Finland they are based on law. Of cource you won't get fined if you expose children to stuff that they shouldn't be exposed but at least shops and cinema's have don't sell you stuff that is over your own age limit.

DAI is Restricted 13 in my country (NZ). I was quite surprised when I noticed it on EB Games.
With the content it has I believe it is rated N for mature in the US which would mean 17+

Wut? PEGI gave it solid 18+. Probaply with sex and violence warnings on the back. I excepted nothing less than that though.

Yes ESRB rated it 17+ in US.. with hilarious decription ^^;
Rating Summary: This is a role-playing game in which players assume the role of a warrior battling evil forces in different dimensions. Characters use swords, axes, hammers, and magic attacks to kill fantastical creatures (e.g., demons, monsters, dwarfs) and humans in melee-style combat. Cutscenes sometimes depict characters impaled or getting their throats slit. Violent sequences are often highlighted by cries of pain, gurgling/gushing sounds, and large blood-splatter effects; blood remains on the ground in several environments. The game includes some sexual material: a female character briefly depicted in front of a man's torso (fellatio is implied); characters depicted topless or with exposed buttocks while lying in bed or after sex; some dialogue referencing sex/sexuality (e.g., “'I will bring myself sexual pleasure later, while thinking about this with great respect'” and “The way your t*ts bounce when I pin your arms and take you on the side of the bed…”). The words “f**k,” “sh*t,” and “a*shole” appear in dialogue.

I'd prefer to think of it in a sci-fi sort of way - if you believe in the theory of the multiverse, we're just all occupying different versions of the same universe and we each have our own Cullen to ourselves. We're not all the same Inquisitor and we're all living our own stories in the game anyway. c;
