I can see why, but... I still recognized him right away, not even sure why. My eye just gravitated toward him. Somehow for me he still has that quintessential Cullenness, even if he looks different.  ;)

He's the only one standing like a soldier, for one thing.

Somebody (I think it was ShyViolet) replaced their avatar with a Ken Doll, so I can't take credit

I hate it when someone is on your side, but they're a total obnoxious boob about arguing their case.

Maybe I'm naive, but I really think the Ken Doll thing is largely just that shot. I mean we've been focusing on Cullen for obvious reasons, but take a good look at Vivienne standing beside him, since we've seen better high res closeups of her face. She looks pretty flat and generic in that group pose too, and we already know she's neither of those things. I'm not going to worry about it till we see Cullen in (literally) a more flattering light.  ;)

As long as you swing it back around to everyone's favorite templar it's usually all right

I agree that characters are different from real people. I can't change my sexuality. But I can change the sexuality of the character I'm writing, and he's still the same character. It's an intriguing way of looking at things. Gets more complicated when you're dealing with an RPG, I guess. I can't help seeing it from the perspective of the writer (especially since RPGs let us "write" our own story) instead of the reader/player.

This was basically what I was trying to say, and now I'm slightly ashamed that you were able to sum it up in a sentence when I took about two paragraphs.

I have a feeling his model isn't even 100% finished.

Yeah, Vivienne I noticed looks like she was cut from another scene and pasted in there, lol

Hey don't sweat it; I've written a sh!t-ton about gender and sexuality so it's kind of my thing  I'm sick to death of talking about it sometimes. Yet I keep talking about it.

If I call him Ken Doll, it's out of endearment. :P It's mostly the hair for me. But they all do look derpy here up close.

When I saw Cullen the very first time, I thought he had on long purple pants and didn't have boots on, just some weird loafers.   It was way too dark to tell. Fortunately we averted that fashion crisis.

;) Then I will not force you to talk about it any more today!

Anyway, can't wait. October 7th seems so far away. I just want to cuddle whatever romance I choose, and I hope and pray that's it's Cullen.

Aww, I don't really mind :) You can always PM me if you wanna chat about gender and games and stuff in general so we're not off topic. I'm actually working on a project that's related to all that stuff right now.

I'm finding if I shift my focus away from romance and to my character and the story as a whole I can feel excited about the game again. Of course, that makes it rather difficult to discuss the game in the Cullen thread, since... I'm trying not to think about Cullen

When the excitement gets to be too much, I just shift my focus to my all-time favorite romance: Garrus!

I loved him in Mass Effect, and I found his romance to be the most..."organic".

ME1: Shepard is Garrus' mentor, for lack of a better word. They fight together, get to know each other, become friends.

ME2: Garrus serves as a link to the life Shepard remembers. He's your friend, and the one that has your back no matter what. When you choose the romance with him, it's more like best friends comforting each other before you might die.

ME3: It's the only time "love" is brought up. And it's when Shepard and Garrus fully commit.

It was wonderful. It took years of growing and getting to know each other before either of you said "I love you". Which I find to be more realistic than one game can give a player.

Aaaaannnnddd to bring it back on topic, I wonder where Cullen's romance will fall in terms of my favorite to least favorite.

I think we maaaay have gravitated to him because we were looking for him though you know? The whole trailer I was like "Cullen...no.Cullen? Noooo. Cullen? Yes that's him aargh! "

Identity is fluid though and based entirely on social constructs.

So, I was examining what the lovely Cam said again:

"The romances are more complex both in type of romances going forward and how you go through that romance," Lee explained to us. "The different types of sexual orientation of the different kinds of characters around you is also more complex than in previous games. I think there's going to be a lot more realistic... realistic... you know what I mean -- anyway, more engaging and more involved than in previous games. That's definitely the goal, and we are definitely going to go out there with some characters just being one sexual orientation. And that previously wasn't the case. The real world reflects that so we're going to make a game that reflects that as well."

And I realized... he doesn't specifically that FOLLOWERS will have set sexualities. He just says "the different kinds of characters around you." Hmmmmmmmm.

I'm sorry Art (and if someone has already said this I just saw the post and immediately responded! But Alan kinda already said it was the companions and that they new a lot of people would be really unhappy.

Did you know that the original Barbie and Ken were actually brother and sister? Supposedly the person who made Barbie made one of her son as well. I think they were chocolate originally though. I guess it tasted awful.

Also Ken Cullen....oh how I hope better pictures of him prove that isn't what they've done!

Without wanting to sound cheesy because as a straight gamer I have more privilege than some here but I feel for those among us who feel marginalised by the set sexuality announcement. I guess when it all boils down to it I think people matter more than pixels or immersion in a fantasy setting or replicating some arbitrary notion of reality. Real, living, breathing, gaming people who maybe took some comfort or joy in the fact that for once their hero got the guy or gal of their choice. I wish that they had gone down a different path with the sexualities. Actually, I feel surprisingly crappy about the whole thing. :(

Crap. Thanks for ruining my temporary minuscule levels of hope  =] Just kidding, thanks for telling me lol Wow, they knew a lot of people would be unhappy? Nice move, team. Nice.

I wonder if they made his stubble more blonde? I can see it a little in a lit up picture, but barely. It was on the darker side in DA2, yeah?

Umm really? To me the system which is full of different sexualities sounds best rather than everyone being bisexual. I understand how it can be sad when companion you wanted to romance is wrong sexuality to your character but otherwise I think this choice gives more representation than all bi.

Me too -- even if it ultimately doesn't affect how I want to play the game (say Cullen is revealed to be bi), I will still be sad.

Maybe because the oppressive nature of gender and sexuality is a thing that we all have to deal with in real life. And Dragon Age was a place where we could put those things aside and just... be ourselves for once. Have everything just work out. And now they've changed that, why? They no doubt are doing it for good, progressive, thoughtful reasons. But so many people will feel hurt and left out because of it. Hurting good, supportive fans just doesn't make sense to me.

I know what you mean, it bothers me that we always get so many people complaining about our companion's sexuality every time we get a new game, when to me, the whole thing is utter nonsense because of the genre we're dealing with.

It's a roleplaying game.

Even as a straight male myself, I have absolutely no problem playing the Warden, Hawke or Shepard as having a different gender or orientation to my own. It's part of the fun of roleplay games to allow you to make that disconnect after all, otherwise, what's the point of us even playing a character?
