Just swooping back in for my second comment. I just finished 'What pride had wrought' and now it sounds like everyone's saying goodbye to me and now I'm scared of finishing the game. What did I do with my life before playing DA:I?!
On a side note, that scene with Cullen between 'The final piece' and 'What pride had wrought' is a win.
Did anyone else have a hard time finishing the game on their first play through? I know I can just play through again, but it's hard to let go of your first inquisitor

Then load your very first save of your first inquisitor, complete the game in the perfect way possible (I regret that I hardened Leliana as I did not stop her from killing the scout ).

 

I rushed through my first inquisitor - didn't even kill the dragons! - and now i'm playing her again, taking my time doing things, fixing stuff i didn't like from the epilogue, stuff like that. and occasionally, i'll switch to my other inquisitors to follow their romances and make the other big choices.

It's hard letting go... But maybe I'll do two playthroughs at the same time after this and just jump back and forward between the two. I don't know exactly why, but it makes me feel a little better about it. Maybe doing multiple at a time will make it seem less personal and my original character will be 'the one I actually took seriously and paid attention too.'

oh i know it's hard. i probably have replayed my surana four or five times now ):

the thing is, i have an anxiety thing that makes waiting for endings drive me NUTS. i can only read on weekends, because i'll marathon the book. i probably read asunder in like, 13 hours. So i plan my characters in advance, rush through the game, suffer terrible emotional scars in the process because i'm sleep deprived and half starving, then go back and play like an actual, functional human being.

 

Rushing through things DID make for the most epic Origins finale ever to exist, though. it's very bad when you run out of poultices and the healer gets knocked out while the archdemon still has half his health.

have a certain percentage of people who detest them can optionally die in DAI? Hawke, Alistair, Fiona, Loghain, etc.? It's as if they're giving people the chance to get it out of their systems, with Stroud as an option for those who don't want to choose between favorites...

 

 

Thank the Maker there was Stroud. It was already hard letting Hawke die in order to save Loghain's life, but If I had to choose between Hawke and Alistair, my head would explode!

I'm not convinced Hawke is even dead, so I had no probs leaving her in the Fade, even when the Warden was Stroud. My quizzy plays on the fact that the Warden (Stroud or Alistair or Logain) is the most senior Warden around and needs to help rebuild the order. Thedas still needs protection from the Blight. Out of four playthroughs, three have Alistar as the Warden, simply because I didn't think his cameo as king was enough, lol. Granted, most of my actual DA:O playthroughs put him on the throne.

Oh I'm like that with books too. Once I start a really good one I can't stop... For anything. Then once I finish I instantly regret reading it so fast. When I read the Dragonlance Chronicles I immediately restarted the series once I was done as I couldn't face having finished it :/

Just thought I'd throw this out there in case it helps someone in the future: the next time someone posts content without credit on Tumblr, the best course of action would be to have the owner/artist of the original content message Tumblr support directly without contacting the reposter first (support@tumblr.com) because if support deletes the original repost, it gets removed across all the blogs it was reblogged to. I understand that the nice thing to do is to try to ask the reposter to delete it themselves, but unfortunately this is what happens when the reposter is kind enough to actually listen. The owner of the content will get a confirmation email when the stolen content is removed, so if you still want to be courteous you can just send a message after that to apologize for not telling them first due to the technical reasons. It's weird that Tumblr hasn't found a work-around for this but it's been like this for years and they don't appear to be able to do anything about it. :c

A lot of random babbling about Cullen and Dorian romances below. Careful not to waste your time reading all that.

So far, the best romances have been Cullen and Dorian's. In my humble opinion, of course.

 

Cullen is perfect for a woman; the commander is an experienced and down-to-earth man, with humble origins, who had responsibilities since a tender age and knows the value of compromise. He's blossomed into full maturity after two disasters - the Broken Circle and the implosion of Kirkwall - , having become much more assertive since commanding the templars.

 

(This is made clear when he confronts Chancellor Roderick, a demonstration of how he'll no longer bow to any authority just because they have a respectable position. Cullen values hierarchy and places stability above all else. The fact that he challenges the chancellor, the personification of these values, shows that he has learned a priceless lesson. No doubt having witnessed Meredith's downfall into madness opened his eyes to the danger of the bad authority and how damaging it can be to follow orders blindly.) 

 

Since the text below is cramming with spoilers, then...spoiler tag.

 Another excellent thing was helping him as his woman with his lyrium addiction. The commander seems to have fully regained control of his life, no longer being led by unfortunate circumstances. Or has he?

We discover he has a weakness, and one that only a mature player will be equipped to understand why it is so serious: LYRIUM ADDICTION.

 

Drug addicts fight a lost battle. You can't get rid of an addiction. Not permanently. You can only postpone it until the next withdrawal symptom, when you feel the uncontrollable urge to use it again. And if no one stops you, you will. No one is strong enough to face it on their own. Not to mention that withdrawal itself is INCREDIBLY painful. This is why there was a question of if the commander is in any pain in the dialog wheel.

 

(Notice that, when he confesses the tragedy in Ferelden Circle, he is shaking. Physycally shaking. He's also pacing the room several times while showing to you his conflicting thoughts. This is the withdrawal acting. We don't actually see it, but I'm sure that, later that day, he was nauseous and vomited once or twice. Maybe the whole week or month.)

 

That scene was extremely intense because of its realism. This is a test of resolve. You need to risk displeasing Cullen by telling him to not take lyrium. You need to enter his private, personal life and deny him something he wants (or rather, needs) very badly. Not a lot of people would do that. Normal people would typically pretend this is not such a big deal and coddle him, telling him using a bit of lyrium wouldn't hurt. But that's where the heart of the choice lies.

 

If you truly love Cullen, you'll sacrifice the future of your relationship by placing his welfare above your selfish interests. You'll risk fighting him, turning into his enemy (so to speak) in order to help him get rid of the addiction. 

 

(I bet a lot of people were upset, thinking that, by allowing Cullen to take lyrium, they would be doing him a favour (since he "seemed to need the stuff so much to alleviate his pain"), but what they show by making this choice is that they simply didn't get the character at all. THAT is the difference between a mature romance and a simple girlish fantasy. A girl -or a woman who still thinks like one- would NEVER understand why this choice matters to the commander. She would simply choose the convenient answer. Or if possible, not choose at all. 

 

(Some people may call Cullen fanservice, but after witnessing his withdrawal, we know for certain they obviously don't know what the **** they are talking about.)

 

This is where I feel you can actually help your man. He literally handles to you an important personal decision. That is the real birth of your relationship with him, right there. Because it goes beyond mere playful flirting. You need to make a decision that will have full-blown consequences into someone else's life. No "I did this because I love you" will fix things if you make a stupid choice. You cannot be light hearted. If you choose poorly, you put him at risk. The commander knows this, so it's no wonder the ends the romance with you if your Inquisitor insists on him taking lyrium. 

 

A TRUE woman stands by her man and helps him with his crises of conscience. She makes him stronger by strenghtening his resolve. His addiction as a way for him to cope with his inner torment was something that was central to his character. It was there since the beginning and permeated every aspect of his life. You'll accept the burden he places on your shoulders and help him carry it all the way. Like a true woman should. 

 

And the help you give him is a sign of trust. It makes all the difference because it's in this particular scene -when he throws the lyrium box against the wall in a fit of rage- that Cullen is decided to let go a major part of his life, the one where he blames the templars (so to speak) for everything that went wrong with him. He's not throwing the box away. He's throwing the remnants of his old life away.  

 

And why is it such a big decision to make him stop having lyrium?

Because he placed all his faith in something that proved many years later to be faulty, unreliable and prone to self destruction.

 

But the Inquisition may not be the same. And you are its symbol. YOU may not be the same.

 

 

 

You see, Bioware could have reduced Cullen's romance to a simple ideal love affair, with a handsome man in a position of authority, something that excites women. Instead, they fully explored his history and built his psychology around his past experience, maintaining coherence all along the way. 

 

The fact that you can actually help a character fight against his inner demons without aking a shortcut was a tremendous advancement. 

 

 

 

Regarding our sassy Tevinter mage, the Dorian romance is VERY mature and well written for a man. From his dialog, we know he already had some previous experience and is VERY much aware of the inconsistency inherent to a gay relationship. This is so true he's actually takne by surprise if your Inquisitor confesses the desire to date him, rather than just have sex.

 

In all seriousness, the gay romance impressed me. I've never seen a game go so deep into the intricacies of what is by definition a turbulent and usually futureless relationship. There's nothing sordid in his affair with the Inquisitor. The dialog they have in bed is remarkable and it shows just how a game can nail human behaviour and mirror even the most complicated relationships. 

All this done without compromising the psycological integrity of Dorian's character and turning him into a stereotype of gay people.

 

Back to the other romances, I'd place Cassandra in 2nd. I love Cassie, I want to see her happy. But, I don't know, she deserved more. The Inquisitor could've made her feel more relaxed and less the military she is.

 

As for the rest, *sighs*, I dunno. Sera in 3rd for the ******. Iron Bull in 4th for the...ahem. You know what scene springs to mind. THAT scene. The ONE. 

 

Regarding Josephine...yeah, ain't saying nuffin about that.

Bisexual char. Worships Inquisitor. Romances any gender. Feels like Anders/Merill/Fenris romance all over again. You know, DA2.

Stupid street duel. Too cliche. Whatever.

 

(Wish I could have flirted with a few NPCs. Like Loghain, for instance. Thoughts of Bann Teagan still make me feel warm all over, you know.  )

lyrium addiction the way I did. He's suffering now, for sure, but he's healing. This is his body detoxing itself, and though it might be painful to watch him relive his traumas it is an essential step towards a better life for him. He's always had such a strong resolve to do the right thing and it was his decision to stop. It's clearly important to him to not feel chained to the Templars the way mages are chained to circles.

This is his chance to be free, and our chance to finally lift our beloved lion cub into the sky towards a brighter future.

Thank you for this post, good lady. I couldn't express this any better even if I were a native English speaker. I was pleasantly surprised how mature and deep was Cullen's romance, although I found the options to react as Inquisitor to Cullen's suffering a bit lacking.

"You can do it"? Like, really? Couldn't she say that he wouldn't be alone in this struggle, that it hurts to see him in such pain, but she will be by his side, sharing his suffering? Or atleast she could hold his hand while talking to him. It wouldn't hurt to add some drama to that dialogue. Hell, in my headcanon Inquisitor takes up residence in the adjacent tower, so she could calm him down if Cullen has nightmares.

  

 

On another note, my Quizzie finally got to play Wicked grace, and I can safely say for me this scene beats every other scene from entire DAI so far. I strongly suggest to be patient and not to spoil it, thus I place all the emotional rambling under the spoiler.

I knew nothing about it, besides that we play some cards and get to see naked Cullen (which already makes it one of my favourites by default  ), so I was unprepared for its sheer hilariousness.

I felt genuinely happy and warm inside, seeing as usually reserved Cullen gradually puts down his defenses and joins in on the fun. You can hear in his voice how he overcomes his shyness and is eager to be accepted. The expressions he makes, a hint of tipsiness in his voice, the way he waves his hands around telling a funny story  -- everything about him in this scene is so humane. He feels so real and alive. I’d say it’s the closest a Bioware ever got to creating a living believable character.

I can’t help but get caught up in the cheery mood and laugh with others at his story. I even teared up a little, being so content that Cullen’s finally surrounded by friends and finds a place where he belongs.   And OMG, those puppy eyes Cullen makes at Inquisitor before he dashes from the table, deliciously naked!    And what’s even better, you can tease him afterwards! Priceless!

And don’t get me started on the companions’ reaction, unless you want another incoherent text in poor English
