Whooo crawling out of my self-imposed forum ban now that I am nearing the end of the game. Haha so I caved and started female (what can I say? The female inquisitor VA options blew me away. The male voices were great too, don't get me wrong, but damn. I love Alix Wilton Regan's work in this so much.) I've just locked in romance (got the avhievement, I mean) with Cullen and it was mind-numbingly adorable. Totally fits my sunshine and optimism Dalish mage. He was as awkward as I expected but also smoother than I was expecting?? Very sweet.

I hope bioware adds a way to import faces into the character creator at some point, like the face codes in mass effect, since I got pretty attached to my cute tomboyish Dalish girl's face (and the fact that her face looks nice in resting position AND during expressions in cutscenes instead of having a fine resting face and a weird constipated look that my attempts at a male character have yielded is a huge bonus).

I may or may not have also laughed myself breathless when (slight war table banter spoilers?? Idk what's appropriate to post outside tags so I'm just gonna use them liberally.)

Cullen calibrating the trebuchets. I was honestly half expecting Garrus to crash through the window of the war room, transcending space and time, like DID SOMEONE SAY CALIBRATION???!?! Also Leliana teasing Cullen about his relationship was so cute. I was really happy to see some shades of DAO's playful Leliana. More on that later.

On a completely unrelated note, various plot related spoilers below, along with short or not so short, rambling impressions about the main cast.

I was expecting to love Cassandra but I wasn't planning on doing her romance route but now that I've played the game?? Ugh!!!! If she were bi, I'm pretty sure my Dalish mage would've gone for her in a heartbeat. What the heck, Cass. Who gave you the right to be adorable as hell. She's easily one of my favorite companions this round, along with Dorian. Cassandra Disgusted Noise 500 Middle Names Pentaghast, a woman after my heart 8I. She disagrees with my mage on practically every major plot decision, and I was expecting some kind of horrible fallout poop storm with her but surprisingly?? I gained her friendship? I really like the rapport she has with the inquisitor. That she may not agree, but there's a strong mutual respect. Heh. I like to think my Inquisitor and her are good friends despite philosophical differences.

I wasn't expecting to care much for Blackwall but I ended up liking him a fair bit too. His story was completely out of left field and quite interesting. Not sure how I feel about Vivienne yet, but I enjoyed her party banter immensely. Maybe if I played more pro-circle, I'd be able to formulate a more solid opinion of her. As it stands, my approval with her isn't particularly high enough for her to give my Lavellan the time of day LOL.

Not much to say about the other companions. Varric is a star, Bull (and Chargers!!!!) is/are fantastic, I adore Dorian and I had originally planned for him to be my first romance. I'll save him for when the game is less new and less buggy as incentive to finally buy myself a new computer (I, unfortunately, am a victim of the freak surprise intermittent crashes LOL. Not to an unplayable degree, only mildly irritating at worst, but still annoying and slightly stressful. I pretty much quick save every 10 minutes or so out of habit now.) Sera is... Weird? Hilarious, yes, and I didn't like her much until after a certain rooftop scene where I feel like her character finally 'clicked' to me. Solas is an absolutely fascinating character. I heard his romance is quite an emotional rollercoaster? Haven't beaten the game yet, but I'm very interested now. Cole is great but I'm not sure he likes me much due to greatly disapproving of one of my major plot 'choices' (pretty sure I missed something major or messed up the Wicked Eyes quest, since apparently Gaspard or Briala could have been choices? I roleplayed a character who was unwilling to make unnecessary sacrifices so just letting Celene die was out of the question u__u ah well. Next time.), and pretty much disapproving of all of my judgments (my Lavellan refuses to be an executioner so... No executions. Or unnecessary humiliation. That said, I, personally, really wanted to lop the head off of at least one judgment prisoner 8T;; how could you do that to the Wardens, Magister what's your name??? How could you!!!! Ughhhh!! Kick his slimy butt off the highest cliff in the Hinterlands, I say.) Still got his personal quest though so I guess we'll see how that turns out.

Leliana?! What happened?! She actually kind of scares me in this game. And I'm saying that as someone who was completely smitten with her in DAO. It was great seeing a few shades of her former self shine through during certain situations, but woah! I still love her, don't get me wrong, but talk about dark! I'm really curious about how she'd talk about the warden if I had imported a Leliana romance. I love that Schmooples got a passing mention though ;v;. Josie is really cute, although I feel like I didn't get too many scenes with her. Maybe she's deeper if you romance her? /shrugs.

Mommy Morrigan was awesome to see as well, and I'm excited to do a replay with an import of a warden romance. She was a lot less prickly pear than I was expecting, haha. I loved how unthrilled Leliana was about her presence at the Ball, too.

OK I lied that was a bit longer and much more rambly than I had planned. All-in-all, I'm enjoying this game immensely, random crashes and my weird war table glitch aside.

I'm glad I started off with Cullen's romance arc though - it's a really sweet one. Poor guy has been through so much stuff LOL. I find myself torn between rushing ahead with the story because I want to find out what happens next (both for romance scenes and so the story itself) and wanting to slow down and explore all the areas. The main plot feels... Kind of short? I think I'm at roughly the climax and nearing the end of the main campaign. Hmgn. Who knows. Guess I'll find out.

Anyways, long rambling post tl;dr - wasn't too excited about this guy but he won me over with his incredible lost puppy charm. The shy, bumbling romance between him and the inquisitor was just way too cute. And it's really not a post from me without going on about voices. Greg Ellis's VA is a delight to listen to *v*.

Bioware games are some of the few games with voice acting where I listen to the script the whole way through. I don't generally have the patience for voice acting, since I'm a pretty speedy reader and I just wanna get on with it, but man. I can't bring myself to skip dialogue in these games! Awesome work and mad props to all the VAs.

I feel like it's an essential aspect of his character that he is specifically gay and not any other orientation. It wouldn't have been such a big deal for him to have to fulfill his family's expectations if he were okay with having a relationship with a woman eventually, but that's just not who he is, and I have to respect their decision to write him as such. He wouldn't be the same Dorian we love if he wasn't the way he was. He might not have left Tevinter the time he did, or even chosen the same path in life that brought him to our doorstep. We might not have ever met him.

 

But it's totally understandable that there are those who would rather not romance a male as a male, of course. I'm straight myself but I wouldn't mind making a male quizzy somewhere down the line just to get to know more of him on his terms.

 

 

Same! I wouldn't alter anything about that wonderful man for all the world. I enjoy how much he enjoys flirting with a female Inquisitor, just for the fun of it. God, I love Dorian! He makes me have all the feels. I am the same as you, he is always the first one of the companions that really seems to connect with my Inquisitor. And I love the aspect of the friend flirting between a female and Dorian. There is absolutely nothing to it other than the fact that they both enjoy the back and forth of it. It is just another form of banter between them. He will definitely be a staple in my fics when I decide to get down to some serious writing. I just want to hug him!

I found that out the first time I stepped into Redcliffe and opened the door to the house with all the skulls in it in this playthrough. Don't think it has anything to do with collecting the shards.

Dorian was my first friendship too! In fact, I'm fairly certain he approved of most of my mage's decisions throughout the game so far. Haha, I was actually originally going to go for the necromancy tree, but he became such a staple of my party because come ON, his banter is such gold, that I decided last minute to specialize rift mage for diversity's sake :T.

Between him, Fenris, and Krem, I'm really hoping Tevinter takes center stage in a sequel eventually. I wanna know more about the imperium, dangit!

If you're pro-Ferelden, then leaving Celene on the throne is the best course of action. Gaspard, as a militant, will try to re-ignite the war with Ferelden, or so I've read. All that said, because the PC is a Marcher, it may not matter at all, but since I like Ferelden and think Orlais is weird, I tend towards a weaker Orlais. I may choose Gaspard next time, just to see, but I'm already sure that whatever my canon playthrough ends up being, Celene will remain Empress.

 

I have no idea what happens if you choose Briala.

 

All that to say that I got Greatly Disapproves from Cole after that choice too, but I don't know enough about him to know why.

All that said, because the PC is a Marcher, it may not matter at all, but since I like Ferelden and think Orlais is weird, I tend towards a weaker Orlais. I may choose Gaspard next time, just to see, but I'm already sure that whatever my canon playthrough ends up being, Celene will remain Empress.

That isn't going to make players of male elves feel much better for several reasons (or even female elves uninterested in Solas). Being the warden/hope-to-save-Fereldan-and-Thedas didn't help avoid comments about being an elf in DAO (there's a kitchen boy in Eamon's Denerim estate who'll tell you that his parent says all elves have the clap even after the Landsmeet). Even the Dalish insult a city elf.

I adore Dorian. And as much as I'd like him to be romanceable by a woman, a huge part of his story and character would drop out if he was bi. I also like that they're respecting who people are---people are who they are and that makes them more interesting.
