I know! I am a bad person!   I went to my corner of the thread and faced the wall, don't you worry. Now I just need an oversized "get along" t-shirt that I can climb into with Cullen for my punishment to be complete...........yes, that will be punishment.

Aw, poor thing! I guess it shows that he obviously liked her way more than he was letting on up until that point. 

 

I really wish that the love interests had been a bit more proactive with the romance. Like, obviously we have to trigger things by flirting first but I wish we'd seen something akin to DAO and DA2 where if you didn't let your feelings for him known first he'd approach you with it instead, like how Alistair and Anders would approach you with: "here's the thing, I can't stop thinking about you etc etc..."  I'd have killed to see Cullen awkwardly trying to find the words to tell the Inquisitor how he felt.

It would be nice for our girl to not be the one doing all the chasing but I don't know if that would work for Cullen per-say due to his respect(?) for rank. I guess it could be considered a situation where it would be deemed inappropriate to act in such a casual manner with you commanding officer and being the "Herald on Andraste" can be considered rather intimidating. I could imagine that with all his "hang ups" he may have thought he wasn't good enough for a relationship in this point in time unless you steer him towards it. It is quite sad really, that he can have so little confidence when it comes to love. So little experience. Cullen seems to be a lot more weary of becoming close to someone, whereas, I don't think Alistair was. That is how I look at it, anyway.

Granted, it does make sense for his character to maybe not approach her first, though I'd have liked to see him get to a point where he couldn't deny or hide his feelings for her any longer, resulting in him just blundering into her room or something to spill out a bunch of words trying to tell her how he feels... but it's an ego thing, I like it when everyone wants a piece of my protagonist's arse, LOL!

I do wish there was some way to trigger the romance subtly that led to him making the first move, though, not just so we could choose to play a shy character but also one who is either naturally reserved or, well, clueless. The first flirts at Skyhold (much more subtle than the ones at Haven) do allow for that to an extent. Of course, someone who wants to be fairly confident and aggressive in pursuing him might be bothered by those a bit for exactly that reason.

Yeah, I don't think he really pays attention to anything he is feeling for her until after Haven and then finally realizing "oh, shite. She actually could have died. I sent her to her death. Why did I do that? Because I actually really like her. Can't happen again," as to why he does his big protective speech in Skyhold. It is a hard situation because I always view Cullen as someone that would be willing to let her go if it meant it was for the greater good though I do think he would prefer to fight to the death alongside her if there was no other way to go about it. I like how he looks to the future, is positive in their survival. It shows that he has finally found something worth holding onto and he isn't going to be letting that go anytime soon.

Even though I thought pretty much the same, at least Cullen was considerate enough to ask "what about your escape?"or something and also after you meet him in the battlefield for the first time instead of choosing the mountain path,he comments how he's glad that you survived, in the second meeting.I thought that it was heart-warming that he cares for the inquisitor as a person,I don't know for other players,but I felt that before the fight with Corypheus where my inquisitor proved herself, everyone viewed her as a tool to close the rifts(with some exceptions).

Well, he does confess that he'd wanted to kiss her/be intimate with her for a lot longer than he'd like to admit so he'd probably been silently lusting after her for months by that point but was trying to ignore it since he's got a job to do, plus his head mess, the lyrium withdrawals and everything else.

 

In regards to Haven, I think at that point he doesn't expect anyone to live, even with that secret tunnel. It was a chance they had to take and the Inquisitor was really the only one who could stay behind because the attack was directed at her. Plus, at that point they'd all assumed it was mainly just a dragon and an army led by Samson/Calpernia, so when Corypheus showed his face they were likely all cacking themselves. Cullen's also front of the pack when they find the Inquisitor as she passes out in the snow (likely a coincidence), so when we do finally get that Skyhold scene where he starts to make his feelings clear he seems relieved to get it off his chest.

 

Also, at the beginning of that scene Cullen says something and then stops and gives her this longing look, to which the Inquisitor can say "do you ever stop working", "is something wrong" etc, does he do that in all situations regardless of whether you've flirted with him or not?

This is exactly my thinking. I've always imagined that Cullen would have a hard time being in a real relationship for the first time, since he's spent his whole life thinking about the greater good, to the detriment of his own desires. Now, suddenly, there's someone in his life that makes him question that. Thinking about one person who's so dear to him that he wonders if he'd be able to risk losing them for the greater good. I always wanted to see that moment in his development. ... and I think we just might have!

I think we all just need a Cullen dating sim where we can punch in codes of how we personally want things to go and then sit back and enjoy all the pixels. BioWare <----------- this will come in form of a DLC, yes?

So I finally saw the consequences of telling Cullen to keep taking lyrium until the war is over:

During what I assume is his last cutscene (after the Temple of Mythal and before fighting Corypheus) when he's praying in front of the statue of Andraste, he recites the line "blessed are they who stand before the corrupt and the wicked ans do not falter" and says he feels like he's faltered by not keeping his promise to himself about quitting lyrium.

I tried the option where the Inquisitor says "Cullen... what if I don't make it?" and his reaction was heartbreaking.

Definitely!! He's no Fenris (duh) or even Zev or Kaidan or Anders, but... he is well-written. FPJ's voice acting is very good, but I think they should have gotten him to do multiple takes for some of these because his tone veers all over the place. Sometimes he sounds like Vega, sometimes Bull, sometimes Kanan.

 

The important thing is, it's NOT what people said it would be. It's not a joke. It's not BDSM.
