Anyway, just a thought. IF Cullen is a NPC romance, wouldn't that mean we would have 6 LIs? Even though they said the romance budget saw no increase? I mean, I just think it would be strange to have half the LIs to not be companions. Especially given Gaider's supposed dislike of them.

This another point I like. If there are only four LI's, as was suggested by DG talk of resource allocation, then that dramatically increases the likelihood of him being a companion.
Really, Cullen being an NPC kinda falls all little short on some of things we know. But I'm still more confident in Cullen being an NPC than him being a companion at this time.
The problem with Cullen being an NPC has been brought up before: why did he join the Inquisitor as an advisor? Either he was kicked out, or he's advising specifically for Templars. I don't know.
I think he was travelling along the road, when he came up on the Inquisitor trying to hitch a ride to Val Royeaux. And the rest was history.

Yeah that's what makes me scratch my head. He said the budget had not increased for romances. So why go from 4 to 6? How is this financially feasible?

I agree, I don't care if Cullen is not a companion. I'm happy that he's a LI and that we'll get to know him better.
And I can honestly see him better as a NPC rather than a companion. The only thing to me that sucks about him not being a companion is not having him included in the party banter.
Yeah I'm still elated that we even get him as a romance! Really we are doing so much better than we COULD be doing so I feel a little silly (or maybe ungrateful?) still wishing for companion status; But I really want to hear him banter with our other companions, or comments he has about all these locations he probably never imagined he'd ever see. The first time he sees a dragon or gets dragged into the fade with us somehow! I hope if he IS a romance it's more filled out then the Cortez romance. Or maybe when you are at your base you can hear his banter with the party. You could kinda hear some with Cortez and Vega which was nice but still felt a little lacking. I really trust the writers and have always loved Bioware games and felt really satisfied with all of them, so I HAVE FAITH! But If he is a NPC LI I reeeeaaaallly hope it's as in depth as a regular companion one!
I feel ya. The banter was one of things I was looking forward to the most, especially the ribbing Varric would likely give him. And indeed, I am hoping and praying for something much more involved and substantial than the romance with Cortez. I'm determined to hang onto the elation I felt when I found out the LI status was confirmed, though, and that requires a little creative optimism under the circumstance. In the end, I guess I must just keep reminding myself that there's a reason Bioware is my favorite developer.

I agree, I don't care if Cullen is not a companion. I'm happy that he's a LI and that we'll get to know him better.

(I feel kind of embarrassed to mention this b/c I think I talk about it too much already, but...)
I do actually prefer the thought of him being an NPC because I feel it fits his character more; that said, of course I would miss his banter with the other characters, and having him along for the journey during important quests would be cool.
But mostly what I'm afraid of (to everyone's infinite surprise /sarcasm ) is that he will be another Sebastian, well, a sort of marriage between Sebastian and Cortez/Traynor. A straight-only pseudo-romance who can't even travel with. Why do I think he could be straight-only, because I can see our very lovely and progressive Writer's Pit team saying, okay, if we have to make NPC romances, lets make THOSE the straight ones and let the companions be bi and gay. So, that is my fear.
And what compounds this fear -- The fact that the devs will NOT confirm whether 1) he's a companion or not, or 2) he and Cass are playersexual.
Like, why? Why, devs, why? What are you not wanting to reveal here?
Perhaps it's some crazy new game mechanic that none of us can even fathom at this point.
Oh well. We'll all find out soon enough, and hopefully soon enough will be by the end of PAX!

b} DAI romances are less expensive as more of the romance is built into the story, causing there to be less differentiation between romance and non-romance.
c) Romances cost the same as in DA2, and thus there are only four. Cullen is more likely a companion.
d) None of the above/Other
