Maybe the court in Orlais assumed Cullen must've been a Kinght-Commander previously because he yields such a respectable position in the Inquisition now as a Commander. So he couldn't have occupied anything less than the highest rank in his previous job.
Either that or they just don't know the difference between Knight-Captain and Knight-Commander.

Just stumbled upon another fanfic about Cullen/Dorian or Cullen/Male Inquisitor pairing. Please everyone, Cullen's straight & Dorian's gay. This is as bad as making Dorian/female character pairing, it's changing his essence. This is wrong. Very wrong.
I'm against any mod/(to some extent fanfics) making Cullen or Dorian or Cass or Sera or Solas to be available to gender they're not meant to romance.
Anyone doing this is as bad as Dorian's dad wanting to use blood magic to change sexual orientation. Each character's preferences is a part of their story, of their being. Please respect this at last.

I mean, it works well if discovering that part of their sexuality forms a crucial aspect of a character's story arc, if we only had limited exposure to that character previously so their personality wasn't properly defined, or if they were always envisioned that way but for whatever reasons, they weren't implimented as such beforehand?
For instance, Merrill and Anders didn't have that much focus in the Dalish Origin or Awakening for us to really get to properly define them or necessarily what their sexuality was. For Merrill, that allowed her character to be vastly reworked in DA2 and not seem off-puttingly out-of-character, because aside from a brief 20 minute section, we barely got to know her. As for Anders, his newfound bisexuality in DA2 was fine because the game established that Karl was his first male relationship, so it didn't contradict his previous depiction as being solely heterosexual in Awakening.
While Kaidan was revealed to be Bisexual after two games of his being shown as straight, that didn't strike me again as being out of the question as he was originally going to be a bisexual romance in the first game and so the writer's presumably had always had it in their mind that he was Bisexual? This also worked better for him than Ashley (who was also supposed to be a bisexual romance) because unlike Kaidan, Ashley was far more upfront about herself and so she would have made this clear far earlier if she was into a female Shepard? Kaidan meanwhile was more professional and reticent to talk about himself, so his lack of forthcoming on this subject and his sexual orientation allowed this to be something he only felt comfortable revealing to Shepard after a sufficent level of trust had been established?
But as for Cullen, Sera and Dorian, who've been so firmly established as straight, lesbian and gay, I really can't see how anyone could pull off changing their sexual preference in a convincing way, without being a really good storyteller?
I'm not against those fanfics at all, but they really need to sell me on those relationships for me to go along with non-canon pairings.
I have to disagree with this one. I get Dorian's case, his sexuality is big part of his character arc. However Cullen's is not, its also not removing representation or anything. Characters aren't same as people to me, they can be written differently and approached differently. They can be used as base in fanfics and altered a lot according writers or artist views. Marvel actually does this to their own characters, there is universes where Wolverine is gay for example although in canon universe he's straight. Really, these are characters and having headcanons or fanons isn't hurting anyone.

or some spark of inspiration, you cannot force some things to happen in a relationship ;p
- Cullen is a huge snuggler, so when they sleep together in one bed, even if he's asleep, he will always look out for Moirin to embrace and hug her. But he is too hot for her, so she tries to escape him to the edge of the bed, but he follows her anyway. Then she wakes up, and goes to lie down on his side of the bed, but it has no result, he again finds her and hugs against him.
- He teases her mercilessly when they are alone, knowing what buttons to press - he loves to annoy her because it is funny to him, and she easily gets annoyed and frustrated when teased this way.
- She finds it easier to fall asleep, when she's in his arms, especally when she's stressed and worried about her responsibility to the world.
- Moirin twitches her ears unconciously when she's annoyed (and he loves to watch her doing that (: )
- Moirin's ears are very touch sensitive, Cullen loves to use it to his advantage during foreplay.
- Moirin loves to listen to Cullen singing songs or just humming, the latter he does quite often when he gets lost in his thoughts.
- Moirin and Cullen exchanging stories, opinions, and their views about the Chantry and the dalish culture, doing so in the atmosphere of mutual respect.

I get this point of view too though I don't share it. I guess it's something I'm used to in pairings too, canon is often not followed that closely. Personally I like letting people to do what they want with fictional characters ^^;

Ok, this is way beyond the scope of this thread and has potential to get very ugly very fast, so being as brief as possible to avoid turning this into one of those threads: bending a straight character's sexuality to acommodate for the lack of representation in media is completely different from bending the sexuality of a character representing a minority to acommodate for a majority that is already well-catered to.
Making Cullen bi in a fic or headcanon hurts literally nobody - straight men continue to be the majority of men represented in Dragon Age, straight and bi women continue to be well served in number and variety of love interests available to them. Making Dorian straight or bi changes everything - it erases one of the very few representations of gay men we have in the universe, and takes away from gay male players one of the very few stories built to cater specially to them. We don't have the right to take Dorian away from his intended role of representation, but we also don't have the right to claim that Cullen's straightness is a rare and precious asset that needs to be preserved. It's not, and it doesn't. There are straight men by the motherlode in this universe, Cullen sometimes kissing boys in someone's headcanon doesn't damage their representation, nor does it change the ratio of male characters avaliable to female characters, compared to male ones.
So while the sexuality-bending of Dorian is problematic (at least as much as the whitewashing of Isabela in DA2), and probably does need to be discussed in his thread, I don't think it's anyone's place in this thread here to police the wish fulfillment fantasies of gay male players who are already scrapping for bits of representation in the game. We joke about the lack of a knightly/righteous gay love interest, but the reality is, there really are none in the series. If gay players need to look to Alistair and Cullen and bend the rules a bit to get the same opportunities that female characters have had in plenty through the series, let them. It's not hurting anybody, and doesn't take anything away from the character or his female fans. There's plenty of Cullen to go around for everybody, even if some of us unfortunately can only have him in headcanon-land.
