Interesting, so apparently Gaider was on some podcast and was quoted as saying "We did cut a ton of content." To be fair, content always get cut from games so it's not like this is a revelation... I'd just hadn't realised THAT much had been removed, certainly explains why the pacing is off and the ending feels abrupt, lol.

I think it's a guarantee now that we will probably get a major DLC if not an expansion for the game.

Yeah, I think that was always the plan regardless of cut content. First big game on the Frostbite engine with no other BioWare games coming out for a few years yet, EA are gonna want to milk this cash cow!

Yeah, I believe it's more of an EA thing than Bioware lol.

That said, I'd rather pay for an expansion rather than the content stay cut!

Question for y'all: Did you prefer the mage or Templar quest? (if you've played both)

I just finished the Templar quest in my 2nd playthrough, and I was thoroughly impressed.

IMO he wants nothing to do with the templar order anymore because the Templar had failed... Kirkwall templar had failed completely. Cullen's an idealist, he wants the Order to live up to its original idea. His experience in Kirkwall show him that the Order is not the Order he wanted to be a part of anymore.

Above all, Cullen wants to protect people (including mages). So I can understand why he wants to get out of it.

Which is why I had always thought he would have wanted a hand in being able to bring the order back to what it once was. I understand why he left the order and rightly so but we see nothing of it, no hesitation from him and if you have spent more than half your life being part of something, hesitation would be there. What we are getting at is that it was left out to appease the people that hated him. That it has made Cullen a more 'likable' character by him completely disassociating himself from the order instead of seeing a little bit of wistfulness from him, after all, being a templar wasn't always bad for him. Just think it has taken something away from his character. You don't just put aside ideals that you have lived your entire life by so easily. Maybe it was because we don't meet him until months after he has left the order behind so he has already worked through all that. Either way, it would have been nice to see it in his arc.

Ummm, it's not actually magic. Cole goes into more depth about what Templars do. In essence, it's like Templars reinforce the fabric of reality, disrupting the ability of a mage to manipulate and shape the Fade into magic within the mortal world.

I had the sense that Cullen felt betrayed by the Chantry and to some extent by the order itself, as well as feeling he wanted a chance to get back to his original goal of helping people. The Templars and lyrium addiction were too tied up with the things that had gone wrong in his life. I had the feeling he felt he could do that better with the Inquisition with a cleaner start (and admittedly, I feel it's unleashed his potential as a leader far more than the Templars would have).

Enchanted armor made using lyrium/mages serves a similar purpose when it comes to magic resistance, however. And Mages themselves can use barriers to block forces of nature from accessing a certain point. In Origins Mages had the ability to cast glyph spells that would drain mana from other mages. Do you have an actual link to the dialogue Cole says word for word? Or at least an estimate of when he says it? It's interesting that he points it out. Rift magic is very new to the world of Thedas, so either way I think it's likely that neither the spirits nor the humans fully understand the connection between their worlds. It's definitely something Cole is still learning, and Dagna goes crazy when she realizes you've walked through the Fade physically and she's a scientist in a way.

Edit: I think my point is that magic vs Templar abilities aren't as black and white as they seem and perhaps fall more along a continuum of possible ways to manipulate reality using the same base element.

Wouldn't surprise me if that's also down to cut content and time constraints, especially given that they made him a romance option at the last minute... who knows how much they had to flesh him out in that final year to give him as much content as the other companions/LIs. Tbh, the same can be said for all the characters though, any issues or plights they have are solved within two or three short cutscenes in quick succession.

Cole isn't "learning" though. He knows pretty well what he's talking about. And rift magic? That's got absolutely nothing to do with lyrium based Templar abilities.

I don't have a link to Cole's dialogue cause I'm on my phone at the moment.

And with the amount of grinding we have to do if we want to clear all the areas, there is so much room for more cut scenes. :looks wistfully at all the potential missed: still love the game though, lol. Being someone that has witnessed drug withdrawals firsthand (a lot), with the amount of content we got on it for Cullen, it really didn't seem that bad to me. Though he can be stoic as f*ck when he wants but what Zero said about the sea sickness and how that could have actually been Cullen experiencing his first bout of symptoms (which should have been pretty intense) makes sense to me. I am head-cannoning that or else, for me, his lyrium scenes come off pretty weak.
