Cole isn't "learning" though. He knows pretty well what he's talking about. And rift magic? That's got absolutely nothing to do with lyrium based Templar abilities.

I don't have a link to Cole's dialogue cause I'm on my phone at the moment.

That's fine, I'll see if I can find it. And I really don't think it's possible to completely distance the idea of Lyrium from the concept of rift magic (or any magic at all) considering such a major portion of Inquisition is devoted to exploring how the world of the Fade from which magic is drawn interacts with the physical world and vice versa. It's something Solas really wants you to learn, for one, and I don't think it's a coincidence that lyrium usage affects the mind of its users when the Fade is all about the collective knowledge, memories, and ideas of certain sentient beings on the planet. I guess we'll see in DA4 how they continue to weave this particular narrative. At this point I think the connection between the Fade and the physical world is definitely something worth exploring in the future.

@bbattye If I may: Did Cullen become Knight-Commander for all outcomes in DA2? In promage DA2 import(?) someone calls him Knight-Captain.

@R2sMuse @bbattye I'm pretty sure I heard both during my playthrough (Imported Waffle!Hawke who sided with pro-mage when forced to side.)

@R2sMuse
USER2  @bbattye Yes, at ball he is always former K-Commander. Only Haven templar depends on DA2 import. Puzzling. Story there?

@R2sMuse USER2 I fear that's something that slipped through puzzling. If sided with mages he's never officially promoted.

@bbattye

@R2sMuse USER2 In all cases he effectively commanded the Kirkwall templars. That was apparently enough for the Winter Ball guy :)

Question for y'all: Did you prefer the mage or Templar quest? (if you've played both)

I just finished the Templar quest in my 2nd playthrough, and I was thoroughly impressed.

Spoiler

I prefer the Templar side, recruitment quest and subsequent fallout, because:

I think empathy plays a big part here. I myself don't understand how people could hate him. Dislike him yes, but not all out hate. You can dislike the actions of someone but still show an understanding of where those actions are coming from and I never understand why the people that hated him held no sympathy for what he had been through. It is not an excuse for Cullen's actions, it is the reason why he became the person he did, plain and simple. Yes, he was wrong but he had a very good reason for being wrong, if that makes sense.

I was a little disappointed that we didn't see some sort of attachment to his past as a templar. Even if we saw his old shield propped up in the corner of his room or something. But I think the clean break was made for the people that hated him. Much more easier to start liking the guy if he disassociated himself completely from the order. It could of been something that he did with the Inquisitor; packing away that last piece of his past in a crate to signify that he was finally ready to let go and move forward. :shrugs:

And if I ever see this in one of your posts again "I sorta feel like there's something wrong with me liking him as a character before" Im'a internet slap you.  :P

LOL Well, I did edit it to be "I sorta feel like there's SUPPOSED TO BE something wrong with me liking him as a character before". :lol:

But it def felt like the game was distancing him from who he was before. And... I liked who he was before, flaws and all, just as I like who's he's become. It was just jarring. And, I've seen that notion bouncing around tumblr, that *even he* hated himself. Blergh.

Anyhoo, yeah, I agree with other comments that it would have been nice to have him express a bit more connection to the templar Order. He could be currently in a love-hate relationship with the Order, swung toward the 'hate' side right now as he blames it for his addiction and betrayal, via Meredith. I guess... I just always thought that he had separated what *she* did from the Order in the abstract. So.... I suppose I would've liked to have seen him acknowledge that, instead of his more black and white approach.

Lol, every reason you give as to why you like 'siding' with the templars more, just reaffirms my own decision in making it my canon play-through. I am determined to do it perfectly this time! No more restarting!

I was always concerned that he'd have done all his healing between games. While there was some angst about his past with the Order, there wasn't enough inner conflict about him leaving the Order in general, which is how he was portrayed in his character description on the DA website. Whether that's down to cut content and time restraints may be a factor.

That's another reason why I go pro-mage because at least he addresses some of that deep seated angst about his time as a Templar, which you don't really get otherwise.

edit: It seems alright. No shiny hair and my character's scars are there. I don't know if they fixed the crashes some people were having though.

Oooh very very difficult question, I LOVE both...

Spoiler

Which is why I had always thought he would have wanted a hand in being able to bring the order back to what it once was. I understand why he left the order and rightly so but we see nothing of it, no hesitation from him and if you have spent more than half your life being part of something, hesitation would be there. What we are getting at is that it was left out to appease the people that hated him. That it has made Cullen a more 'likable' character by him completely disassociating himself from the order instead of seeing a little bit of wistfulness from him, after all, being a templar wasn't always bad for him. Just think it has taken something away from his character. You don't just put aside ideals that you have lived your entire life by so easily. Maybe it was because we don't meet him until months after he has left the order behind so he has already worked through all that. Either way, it would have been nice to see it in his arc.

A theory: IMO, mostly of what Cullen had lived in the Templar Order's not fulfilling as much as he wants it. His experience in DA:O, what happens in DA2. What he wants is to protect people and it's not happening during his stay in the Templar order. He's already heavily disappointed.

Cassandra's approach to him might go like this: We have a war between mages & templar. We need you to help us, because we wants to restore order & protect people. At that time, the Templar had seceeded from the Chantry & go rogue, just "purging" all mages that they are initially sworn to protect.

Cullen then decided "Protect People & Restore Order" is more important for him to "Stay With The Templar Order At All Cost & purge mages".

The negative point of this theory is that if ever this was the case, he should've been really bitter about the order, which was not the case.

Yes. As much as I want Cullen to be blissfully unaware and happy for the rest of his life I feel like it is more realistic that he'd still be dealing with the outcome of the events of his life with the Order after only one year away from it. That, and I feel like as much as it pains him he'd rather be aware of what's going on and of the new risks that Templars face. I don't think this means he's abandoned the Order entirely and will continue to distance himself from it for the rest of his life, either. I think that his choice to join the Inquisition was because there was an immediate threat that had to be dealt with and he could do more for both Mages and Templars by working with people outside of the conflict. Cassandra points out that, if he succeeds in breaking away from lyrium, it will mean huge changes for the Templar order as a whole. I can see him working with Templars in the future to make things safer for them than they were for him. Perhaps as an advocate of reform.

So for anyone looking to do some fanfic/fanart in collaboration with a great fan community, they're prepping for another Dragon Age Big Bang.

Check out their post here and vote in the poll for when it should happen.

http://dragonagebb.t...eliminary-ideas

What is a Big Bang?

It's a coordinated fic and art partnership, where writers write fic and then artists create art inspired by the fic. They also do a reverse big bang, where the artists go first.

I did it a year or two ago, resulting in :  What Counts by R2s Muse and associated loverly art by vieralynn

If you've never seen your story come to life in fanart... I highly recommend joining in. It's glorious!!
