I loved that one too. My biggest problem with banter was that often it would trigger at the beggining of fights and let me tell you it's hard to enjoy it when you try to avoid getting killed. My party had totally casual attitude towards enemies. I had to finally turn on subtitles and pause every line or so.Oh my. I listened to about half of that and now I think I'll keep hose two in my party at all times.
I lost it when in my game I got this banter between Cassandra, Vivienne and Varric that revealed thatSpoiler(It was one of the earlier banters between them)

I was referring more to the idea that his moral stances in DA:I are fanservice (anti-fan service?). However, looking back through, it looks like only one person was actually saying that.
As the "one person saying that"... that wasn't what I said at all. Boom and Lola have already explained, but it's not about the destination, it's about the journey. Cullen went from here to ----------------------------> there offscreen, and we don't know how. We don't know if it was Lambert's actions, if it was a growing disillusionment with the Order, if one day he just woke up and said, screw it. And yes, I do think that Cullen completely disassociating himself from the Templars and spending half of the game excusing himself and quoting back BSN posts from anti-Templar threads verbatim, word by word, has an element of appeasing certain vocal groups at the expense of giving Cullen's own long-standing fans, whatever their alignments, better context and background for his decisions. We all deserved better, not just the pro-this or anti-that. (also, if we can please not divide ourselves as pro-this or anti-that - I'm not interested in waving flags for either camp)
Personally, his characterization feels inconsistent and incomplete at places to me, like I'm missing a huge part of how he got to where he is. I'm not entirely satisfied with where his journey left him at the beginning of the game, and it would be easier for me to reconcile the things that bother me if they had been better explained. People have different expectations, and not everyone is going to be pleased - I'm sure a lot of people loved that Cullen threw his hands up and gave up on the Order, but his tone of "I don't believe in the Templars anymore" after that's literally one of the last things he said in DA2 -that he believed in what the Templars stood for- doesn't sit well with me at all, or those who never wanted Cullen to leave the Order in the first place. But that's my opinion. Just as your opinion is your own. We don't all have to agree, it's cool. Naked Cullens for everyone.
In any case, I don't wanna make this into a whole debate, so I'm dropping this here. It's just different points of view. We all have them.

Just as a point, Rhys's father is never revealed in the books. Only that he is a templar. To my knowledge, the father being Greagoir is just headcanon.I haven't heard anything about Templars being sterile due to Lyrium. In fact, Thrask in DA2 has a Mage daughter, Rhys' father in the books is Greagoir, and even Cullen says Templars are allowed to marry.

It's only headcanon, yeah. A popular one because it was started on one of those "confession" blogs and spread from there, but still just headcanon.
One of the dangers of headcanons is that you can joke once about Cullen being Meredith's and Orsino's secret half-blood bastard, and months later find people on tumblr complaining that BioWare "retconned" Cullen's angsty origin by giving him a happy family in Ferelden...

That's totally fair, although I think the ball was rolling by halfway through DA2 so it might have been hard to pace it such that he landed anywhere other than where he did at the start of DA:I. And I also agree that any part of DA fandom making the Cullen fandom feel bad for liking him pre-DA:I is 100% ******; it's not like anyone on this thread was ever going "yeah, you know what, mages AREN'T people!", at least in the year I've been here. I was referring more to the idea that his moral stances in DA:I are fanservice (anti-fan service?). However, looking back through, it looks like only one person was actually saying that. And while reviving a thread debate 20p later was mildly annoying on my part, picking a fight with one person would have been straight up ****** if I'd known that's what I was doing. So I'll leave this train of thought here, with my apologies.
Um, I'm not seeing anything you're saying as disagreeing with what most of us were saying or even the tenor of general conversation... so agree with the choice not to pick a fight.
The limited word budget simply doesn't explore many of the issues we've dissected ad nauseum here. For some of it, I almost feel a phantom footnote that says, "See the BSN Cullen Thread."
His characterization in DA:I is an easy extrapolation from where he was. It is, however, an extrapolation with little to see about how he got there (and with even some confusing facts regarding his promotion, etc). It does beg the question why they distanced him so utterly from the Order, and they did succeed in winning over many doubters.
The "even HE hated himself" argument will continue to stick in my craw.

Sorry, thought it was accepted, since Wynne said his father was a Templar, and Greagoir is one of the people who will appear when Wynne's Amulet of Memories is used.

In my understanding there is no doubt here that Cullen is a great character in dai and his scenes are written beautifully but that this side of him somehow could not exist with him still cherishing templars values, something that was so defining for his character. This and the behind the scenes stuff. It can be considered as catering to haters but i just think it's writers again being awkward with writing about templars in general. But I will shut up now cause I only played through game once and most of his conversations blur in my mind especially with all the mindless drooling when I was around him. Peace love Cullen and so on.

I'm out of likes again but thanks for sharing. This definitely puts his character arch in a context and works well with his off camera struggles I imagined him to have. Also with his strong will and determination and supportive environment that help him to combat addiction as it was in your case. Glad he stroke a chord with you :]Forgive the minor conversation spoiler, but I wanted to share something with the Cullenites:

He did. You can ask some of the more veteran posters: I've always been in support of Cullen. He had the potential to be an interesting and dynamic character and holy crap, did the writers do that and more.
I just don't post in here much, but then again, I've been largely avoiding this section of the forums in general. I've still got to finish the game, but I'm 75 hours in and at What Pride Hath Wrought.

Thank you for sharing that. I have a couple of medical conditions that mean I have to take a lot of powerful and unpleasant drugs. One in particular is like my lyrium. I need to take it to stop my joints developing into the classic rheumatoid arthritis monkey puzzles. Yet it is seriously toxic and makes me sick for 3 or 4 days after I take it. One of the main possible side effects on the list is 'death'! I start injecting it tonight. That scene of Cullen just looking at the box with his 'works' in it is me every Friday evening. I'm no stranger to recreational drugs, at least in the past, but taking this one just gripes my soul, for some reason. I loathe taking it, but I have to. Hopefully science will come up with something that will let me throw my box against the wall as well. Ah well, as least I get decent painkillers too!

Brienne did a great job with him.
I don't think I'll ever be a true Cullenite. What can I say? Even though it's futile, for the older characters, Varric got there first.
I know that some of the posters have been around for years now, and let's just say that they were certainly treated like the whipping boy for the BSN for a long long long time. One of my first threads was asking the BSN why Cullen was considered fan service, as I was new and completely confused. David Gaider stopped by to offer his thoughts. It was pretty cool.
Cullenite or not, I'm now a fan of the character. Shoot, my dwarf rogue likes him, which says a lot. She is largely outside of the drama between mage and templar (part of the reason why I picked her with that class,) and thought that Cullen would be another Templar/ex-Templar pain in the arse. I knew better as a player, but I really try to RP as much as possible, especially the first time around.
Instead, he surprised me and my character both.

This was very touching to read, thank you for sharing it. Cullen's struggle with addiction struck a rather personal chord with me too, I agree that it was handled with tact and maturity where it could have gone into easy clichés. We have Brianne to thank for that, she did a good job within the constrains of time and word count she had to work with.
Wish you the best in the constant process of staying clean.
...oh, and good luck choosing between Cullen and Blackwall. Cullen easily swept my canon Inquisitor off her feet with his charms, but Blackwall had me so thirsty by the end of my first playthrough that I had to make a second character solely to romance him and get that damn bear out of my system.

Staying clean is easy now. The first few years were rough, but all the smell of meth does is make me sick. Let me tell you, the first time I smelled meth after cleaning up (at an outdoor concert) and felt like I was about to puke, I was so happy. Because I was about to get physically ill. My body no longer craved the crap. Ozzfest 2004, here in Denver. I'll never forget it, because that was the day I knew I was finally free from that nasty stuff. My (now) husband was also celebrating with me. He's been amazing.
When I talk about being a junkie, I'm talking the whole nine. I never shared needles, but I got it straight to the vein. Nothing like it in the world and nothing I'd even want my worst enemy to experience. Hell, the codex descriptions of templars trying the red lyrium for the first time gave me a slight chill. The difference in intensity really was like the differences between smoking/snorting meth and being a complete moron like I was for a little while.
The writers did such an amazing job. I know the game does have some flaws and issues that are still being worked on, but this is quickly shaping up to be one of my favorite RPGs of all time. And I've been playing them since 1986, when Dragon Quest was originally released as Dragon Warrior for the NES. The depth of writing and characterization is astonishing, and so well done.
Cullen is just one amazing example of it. Oh and I like his scar a lot! It gives his face some real character now, and he doesn't look as much like a generic pretty boy anymore. He looks like a damned fine warrior that has seen his far share of battle. However, even outside of the romance, that gentle smirk and the utterly respectful treatment of my Inquisitor really means a lot to me as a player.
Sorry for gushing and walls of text, but the last couple of weeks haven't been easy for someone that actually loves Inquisition.
Awesome, and welcome! Would you like me to post your post on Page 4000?
Sure, I'd be honored. ![]()
