Who are they talking about? Is that a friend, a battle companion, a fellow templar (Barris?), a former lover...who is that?

 

And is that the person who dies and Leliana says "I'm sorry" to Cullen in a cutscene?

 

 

This one is a bit obscure, but Carroll was the Templar in DA:O that tries to stop the Warden from crossing the lake to get to the Circle Tower, he's guarding it because the demons are running riot thanks to Uldred. You talk to Carroll and persuade him (through various options) to get him to take you across the lake. Through codex entries and stuff you learn that Carroll is highly addicted to Lyrium and that it's affecting his mind, even though he doesn't seem all that old.

Fast forward 10+ years and he's joined with the Red Templars serving under Samson helping him smuggle the red lyrium etc. You see all this if you go pro-mage in DAI. Carroll has become highly mutated through use of the red stuff and you basically get a quest where you have to hunt him down and kill him. Cullen asks you to make it quick because obviously he once served along side him years ago back in Kinloch Hold. It's sad because even from the reports on the war table you can see it causes him pain

Yes, either that war table mission Elu has just explained or one about helping Kirkwall. I didn't know the second one was also non-romance only, but if you didn't get it, then it was.

Naw, he helped Kirkwall in my PT. But I don't know if it had anything to do with my Seb romance.

Ah okay, thanks. Then only the attacking Kirkwall is non-romance content and helping Kirkwall is for everyone who killed Anders. Interesting that Seb actually has more content in a romance import than all the other DA2 LIs.

This is about Carroll. At a certain point Cullen is trying to track down Carroll, and asks Leliana for help. She tracks him down, finds out he's taken with Red Lyrium (there's one more short Leliana banter that's not in the video), and that's when you get the war table quests to kill him.

 

Interesting that he suddenly remembers Carroll and feels the urge to check to see what became of him. Sounds like they must have been pretty friendly for him get Leliana to find out if he was safe... mind you, he was one of the few Templars to survive the attack so I guess he would be important to him... which is another bloody reason why the Carroll thing should have been proper in-game dialogue or a cut scene! *Sulks*

Thanks for the profile on the character. It's nice to see Bioware remembered the old NPCs and found a clever way to place them in the DA:I universe, even giving them a bittersweet tragic touch.

It's sad, I'd forgotten what a plank Carroll was, LOL! Definitely didn't deserve that kind of fate, but I guess with his mind going to mush and his body craving lyrium Samson probably made the deal perfect... then once you take the red stuff it's so addictive and dangerous that you're essentially ballsed, lol.

Yeah, I had a moment of overwhelmed by feelings the first time I heard those banters and connected the dots. Like, why the hell does he remember Carroll of all people? Oh... because he was one of the few who survived. And he was a nice guy. They probably had cookies together. Oh my god what if they trained together and were friends for years and shared quarters and ate cookies after dinner and gossiped about all the mages hooking up in the library ohmygooodd what's gonna happen am I gonna get a custcene are they gonna fight am I gonna cry???

 

But then I just went there and killed him and didn't even get to tell Cullen "hey love I'm sorry I had to kill your old pal from college the Circle do you wanna cuddle in bed and cry yourself to sleep on my shoulder or something?" Nah. Just, quest completed, +1 power, good night.

Sounds like he got the name off a list he was checking for some reason.

 

Possibly, the messenger said something made him remember Carroll (maybe Cole done one of his Jedi mind tricks to jog his memory or something?) Maybe it was a list of Templars Cullen had wrote out that he wanted to check on?

Yeah, the Warden's letter confirms this, iirc. Obviously there's still false rumours about, but I think I saw this screenshotted.

Actually, the Warden's letter is vague. Uses first person until the very end when it says he/she and Zevran have their own missions. As Chrys says, optimist view is that he's actually with the Warden, but the letter doesn't actually even say that.

OK, I didn't like Carroll, but maybe that's because I always had either Leliana or Morrigan with me, and he always tried to get them to pay a "bribe" to take you across. I made a point of taking Morrigan after I first discovered this so she could scare the crap out of him. That said, he still didn't deserve his fate.

I wish Cullen's nemesis quest where we go with him to find Samson's tranquil friend had instead been us tracking down Carroll with him... could you imagine the heartbreak as Cullen finds him in that state and has an exchange of words with him during which Carroll tells him to join the red templars (because he's obviously still mentally coherent enough to write letters and talk etc), *cue cutscene of Cullen landing the killing blow and then looking sad whilst muttering something like "I'm sorry, old friend"*, then back at the Skyhold we'd go check in on him which would trigger another cutscene where he speaks about Carroll etc etc.

 

*Sigh* so many missed opportunities.
