insecure? now i keep imagining all those husbands and boyfriends being all angry on the internet because their ladies keep telling them to be more like cullen or alistair. or they just get angry not because we got Cullen, but because Cullen haz all the ladies. Anyway I am pretty sure its not only the guy gamers that hate him 

 

HA, my b/f is familiar with Dragon Age, but prefers Bioware's Mass Effect series. Anyways, I don't talk to him at all about the in-game romances (even the Mass Effect ones) simply for the "wow, you're cray cray look" I would get. 

 

I probably shouldn't have said "guys..." what I should have said was "people" to encompass both guys and girls.

I'm sure that, if we did include him in DA3, no matter what direction we take him some people will declare him Ruined FOREVER. I mean, what if we contravened headcanon? Perish the thought. There's so much blank canvas which has been filled in by his fans, it's practically impossible we could do otherwise.

Ultimately, if we do include him, he won't be included for his fans exclusively-- despite the fact they're most likely the ones to claim that's why he'd be present. Those are, after all, the people most likely to be displeased. So any inclusion would be for nefarious purposes of our own. Or to make his fans cry bitter tears. Both are worthy goals, insofar as we're concerned.

That, of course, depends on us including him in any capacity.

*sigh* Hmm, "to-may-to, to-mah-to"? "I'm the rubber, you're the glue..."? Everyone gets so judgey about Cullen fans, when anyone who comes to these forums "off-season" is a fanatic at some level. Embrace the crazy.

True enough. The Cullen fans have a 1000+ page thread devoted to a relatively minor character-- they're no more crazy than someone spending years of their life on a forum to **** about things they don't like. They are, however, still crazy... so it might be worth not being quite so touchy about it every time someone looks their way. If these forums have proven anything, it's that they're a lightning rod for crazy in general.

I still think they'll be the first ones to surround the tower with pitchforks if something was potentially done with him that they didn't like-- but if not? Then cool. That would, however, certainly be a first.

And, yes... obviously I am referring to each and every one of them, who will all react in the exact same way, and not just to the lone few who would post their ire in every single thread they could.

There is no "big deal". There's a small group of fans who like him (a lot!) and want to see him return, but there are almost more posts complaining about people asking for Cullen to return than there are posts asking for him to return. Yes, he is a minor character in the series, but this is hardly an aberration on these forums.

I assure you that if we did include Cullen as a follower, it wouldn't be solely to "pander" to his fans. Not that I would overly mind pandering to them. They're not a large group, but there's hardly a nicer and more polite group one could choose to pander to.

I have nothing against you pandering to your fans, but if that pandering supersedes logic and/or sense, then I would say it's bad thing (not to mention, should not be done)


Why? I'm rather curious what it is about the Cullen fans that is so different about any other interest group on these forums. They all consist of a small group of people that post regularly and advocate for what they'd like to see in the next game. Why should some group advocating for their favorite character be considered "small and unimportant" while another group advocating for a design feature or a change to the graphical style be considered more numerous and totally relevant?

And, let's say we did implement a design feature that some fans on these forums advocated for-- do you honestly think the only reason we would implement it is because those specific fans asked? Because they're so numerous as to impact sales? Don't be silly. It would be because we thought it was a good idea, and happened to agree with them (whether the idea originated from them or not). Characters are no different. We'd no more base a character's inclusion solely on some fans asking for him than exclude that character solely because other fans said they didn't want to see him at all.

So I'd suggest not letting your biases show quite so strongly.

For me, it does sound like you're alluding (or using reverse psychology, perhaps) to Cullen actually being a companion.


If you like. Anytime we don't state something definitively, someone's going to read into what we say. Quite frankly, I'm just getting a little tired of people trying to paint Cullen's fans as something they're not-- the only rude or crude behavior I've seen, in fact, has come from those people and not the fans. And more threads suggesting we shouldn't listen to them then threads by those fans asking for anything.

It's really heart warming to know that the devs recognize our good conduct, and aren't lumping us all in with the bad apples.

LOL And all these threads were just over the course of a few days, so it could sometimes be quite the barrage of threads hating on the fans and less about the character himself. :shrug: Needless to say, this was why most of us just stick to our own now.

I'm sure his popularity had something to do with his bigger role, but I honestly was thinking he would have a bigger role even before I saw how popular he was on the BSN. 

 

I had a theory we'd be seeing more of Cullen as soon as I saw that Greg Ellis wasn't voicing Anders in DA:2. 

 

Then again, maybe it was just wishful thinking on my part. As I said, I've been a fan since Origins, I just didn't realize that his fans had a home on BSN til after Inquisition came out! 

 

And I still wouldn't say that he has this huge mage-hate. I don't think people should be focusing on just his reaction in the Broken Circle questline. The man was tortured because of mages. I don't know much about PTSD, but I'd imagine he would be a very good candidate. I think by the time we meet him in DA:2, he's made quite a bit of progress, proven by the fact that he can even respect a mage Hawke. 

 

From what I know, people describe his bigger role as fanservice. The mage-hate was just an example of what the Tumblr fanbase discussed, not something I necessarly agree with.

 

My point was that the people on Tumblr spread their hate like wildfire and it's best not to take them seriously.

I'm playing my only world state where Alistair is a Warden, and I want to get him to meet Morrigan - so I can't finish the Adamant quest line before I do the Winter Palace. But I would like to get the Cullen dancing scene cos I missed that with my other romance on my first playthrough - but so far we've only just flirted, so I don't know if I'm far enough in a romance to get that scene.

I have not done Adamant yet, but I am able to officially start Cullen's romance at any point. I just finished the chess scene and now have the "can we talk alone" option...I just haven't taken it yet. I believe I would get the dance if I were to start the romance and do the ball before Adamant. Just in my game, Alistair is a warden so there's really no point in changing up the order. I'll have to try this with a king Alistair on another playthrough!

Talk to him as soon as you're in Skyhold to get the first flirt in the courtyard, talk to Hawke + leave Skyhold and come back to move Cullen into his tower, go through the chess scene + leave and come back, the next time you talk to him you should have the "Let's talk about us"  option.

I didn't have to leave Skyhold and had the chess scene and immediately after I got the can we talk option. Can't remember if I just saved and reloaded or just took a walk in the main hall, moving out of his area. Then his quest marker just appeared.

I still haven't work out the best pacing for the companion/advisor content. On the one hand I like how you get bombarded with cutscenes and interaction when you move into Skyhold, but by doing it all at once you end up with less when you're running around grinding and doing side quests.

I usually just do a round every time I return to Skyhold. I usually wait for an influence level point or when all advisors are back from their missions before I return though. Seems to space things out fairly well. Until the gap between the ball and next milestone quest...that is a big gap. I usually run dry of companion/advisor content before the end.

Ah, the senior Cullenites on BSN have had it hard here. You guys are freat for pulling through it and keeping the fandom up!

Yeah, that's what I done during my first playthrough get it all done so you're doing the final two missions back to back.

This is what happened to me. It felt like a week without any companion interaction. Even from my boyfriend.

IKR.. I think I spent more time running back just for a kiss every other quest, cause you know, you gotta get something lol

 

Bet by the end Cullen was like....'Here she comes again' *sigh* * rolls eyes *
