Not a very pleasant subject but I really want to know what do y'all thinks... About Cullen & Lyrium. Will he ever be able to be out of it completely?

EDIT: I know we've discussed this many times but I must have missed many discussion, and now that I've just get these convo with Cole it made me wonder...

 

Hmm yeah, I see what Rex meant last time about Templars being blocked from magic because of their Lyrium usage. Though given how closely connected everything is to the fade...very curious. I remember reading somewhere that the Black City was already corrupted when the magisters broke into the Fade, and I've read a Tumblr post that also mentions the Codex says

The Maker apparently locked away both the Old Gods and the Elven Gods before leaving. Since the Old Gods supposedly taught humanity its magic, presumably some other force in the Fade disapproved of this and this other force forms the basis of the anti-magic abilities the Templars use, which themselves are sort of ...magical?

 

Or, since Archdemons themselves are considered to be tainted Old Gods and the taint apparently already existed before the magisters set foot in the Black City, I wonder if the Blight itself was either caused by The Maker or had some hand in forcing him away from the world...?

 

I should probably go sift through the Codexes in-game again.

 

And aw.... I still like Amell/Cullen and Cousland/Alistair but I have to admit I didn't think he'd be dreaming about her still. After all this time...well, Snape did keep loving Lily for 15+ years after her death. That line's even more poignant considering my Warden made the Ultimate Sacrifice. I'm glad we can help him move on. Though in my headcanon I'm just going to imagine my Inquisitor as a sort of reincarnation of my Warden, because yolo they're both still me anyways WOOT

Maybe it is about any warden and the dialogue changes due to whoever you import so the she would change to a he. Even if the warden isn't Amell/Surana, Cullen still feels indebted to them for what they did and he is having some residual guilt over how he never thanked the warden after she/he saved him. Maybe he is even feeling a little awed so is trying to pull juicy bits of the wardens and Leliana's quests together.....?  

 

It sounds like he's trying to find out if she ever mentioned him, and/or how badly he treated her during the broken circle quest. If you romance him he says that he wishes she knew that he was sorry for being so cruel so maybe he was gonna ask if she mentioned it so that he could apologise but Leliana teased him instead due to his past infatuation? Thus putting him off telling her to pass on the message.

 

Personally, I hope he doesn't ask Leliana this whilst in a relationship with the Inquisitor just because I feel like he should be able to move on and let it go if he's as into the Inquisitor as he claims to be.

He definitely did seem to be trying to awkwardly ask about how close she was to her or something like that, though. I think. There was a lot of stammering. Not something I'd ask about a dead woman, in any event.   

 

I think we need to determine whether or not he says it when being romanced. If he doesn't then I think it is safe to say he is probably specifically referring to Amell/Surana. If he does say it when being romanced then I am more inclined to think that it is about any warden in general cos if not, then that is a real jerk move on Cullen's part even if it is an oversight by his writer. I don't like the idea of him still wistfully thinking about the warden when he is with the Inquisitor and doing it right in front of her, really?

Damn it, it is like Isabela and Fenris blatantly flirting when he is romanced by Hawke all over again.

I do feel that he still had regrets on Amell- Surnua becuase he might have killed her during the Harrowing if you wern't a mage in the game, but I do think he try's to move on.

I had Inquisitor tell him she'd look for a cure for his addiction later. Felt more honest. So you have two people looking to save themselves from things that should damn them. And he wants to apologize for Kinloch Hold. Feels like there's a thread there. And they're both single, so my brain spins.

That sounds like a really great angsty fan fiction waiting to happen.

Sounds to me like he was gonna ask if she ever mentioned him for whatever reason, possibly about him being rude or telling her how he used to be infatuated with her or whatever. He seems to be aware that they're together romantically already, lol.

I don't think this is about Cullen (or Surana/Amell), because the conversation goes like this:

He only mentions Cullen after changing tone to talk about the not bad Templars. The dream part seems related to continuing the "makes them happy, or less afraid, or..." trail of thought, like he's referencing some unhealthy obsession or compulsion.

 

I personally thought this could in fact be referring to his crush and that Cole goes on to talk about Cullen being different because he didn't take advantage of his position of authority or abuse people out of fear. It almost sounds like he was looking for someone who looks like Amell/Surana to protect from other Templars who would hurt her, because he's learned that other Templars have done it out of fear or twisted pleasure in Kirkwall (see: Alrik). He knows he was feeling a ton of fear and anger the last time he saw her, and he probably is afraid that he would have done something terrible to her despite Cole's reassurances. It's an oddly specific thing to mention a female who specifically looks like someone, so I feel like it isn't a reference to general Templars stalking general female mages illicitly. It also ties in well with how he wishes Amell/Surana knew he was sorry about how he acted when she saved him. Since it's been established that Cullen wants to protect mages as well, I feel like it maybe makes sense. And it's definitely a creepy thought, but it does sound like these are Cullen's nightmares since someone "woke up shaking" - so the thoughts wouldn't be pleasant. But that's just my interpretation.

It's a bit of a touchy subject for me, I've had men pining after me for years making things awkward, as well as having boyfriends that have been pining after someone else whilst being with me. Both situations are particularly unpleasant to be in.

I think he'll always feel something for FMage. That doesn't mean he won't move on and end up loving someone more. But there's always going to be special place in his heart for her. It doesn't matter how much time has passed.

i imagine Cullen is probably more on the side of feeling awkward about wanting to kill her, treating her like crap when she saved him and trying to find a way to apologize appropriately, more than creeping over her for several years. ymmv though

Yeah, I agree. I know many other people find the thought uncomfortable, but both Amell and my Quizzy channel my essence into the world of Thedas in my personal playthroughs so I feel like it makes sense that he'd be attracted to the same old soul. I find it a comforting thought. It would be different if he was pining for some other random girl npc, but both people are me, so it's okay. *_*

Yeah, it isn't exactly the most pleasant thing to happen in a relationship. Stuff like that makes you feel icky on the inside. I wouldn't like it if it were the case with Cullen. For me, it definitely takes something away from the whole "besotted" image he projects in the romance and I wouldn't think so highly of it. I understand how he feels about the warden but he doesn't need to go all wistful about it. Being with the Inquisitor is when he should be putting all that aside and leaving it in the past. The mention of her when he talks to the quizzy was great and very nicely done, but the rest is too much for my liking.

Mine was! As soon as I was able to get my hands on Karmas Companion mod, it was like Alistair who?

I guess I can understand bc I've been in the situation? Idk. But I don't find it nearly as unsettling as some. I love Amell/Cullen. I have a lot of head cannon about their time in the tower together. So it's not like he literally just met her for the one line for the first time when we saw them.

There is a very real possibility that he could have been in love w her in my head. And you never forget your first love. I have a boyfriend who is a million times the man my ex could ever hope to be. But my ex was my first love so I'll never forget him, even if I've moved on.

I don't remember getting this in a romanced playthough of Cullen, actually, now I have gotten this in my playthough of with a Solas romance. Which is verily sad that he can't move on if not in a romance.

I dunno if you guys have noticed but I really dislike how long the Cullen x Amell/Surana thing has gone on in game, LOL! Which is a little sad considering we probably would never have got him to where he is now if it wasn't for that.

She's not lost in all cases though, in my (canon before I had to changed it) Amell's case she was oblivious to his affections and had actually been a bit lusty for Jowan, then she met Alistair and that was it, she was/is smitten. She's still alive, she's not bothered that Cullen freaked out at her because she knows he was in a bad way and that's really all there is to it. 

 

And being that she's supposed to be me she'd find it incredibly weird if Cullen was still wistfully longing for her... especially now he's supposed to be love with my me Inquisitor, dammit! Bloody little shite.
