As I understand, it ends. You can only proceed with the romance if you encourage him to kick the addiction.

Actually, that's something that disappointed me about the pro-mage quest in DAI:

I thought that depending on which advisor you sent in to deal with it would've have different results, or that we'd at least get to see what became of the other two advisors and companions when we got sent into the future.

We saw what became of Leliana, but I would've liked to discover that Cullen had been forced to take red lyrium and it had started growing out of him, but that he was still coherent and recognisably him. What with his strong willpower maybe we'd be able to bring back what remained of the man he once was just enough for him to request a mercy killing or something. Then with Josephine we could've found her locked up somewhere completely broken and out of her mind or whatever.

... Man, it's such a horrible thing to even want, but that quest could've added so much more heartbreak, and created more of a sense of urgency by showing you what could potentially happen to everyone if you fail to stop Corypheus. Sure, I was shocked and sad for Leliana, but it would've had even more of an impact on me seeing my love interest and favourite companions in an utter state, and subsequently would create a personal reason not to fail.

 

Couldn’t agree more, if they didn’t have time or resources to make additional cutscenes, they could at least scatter around the Redcliffe castle some letters, telling about your advisors and companions fate. Actually, for me the overall game falls short in the emotional intensity department. Bioware could have made DAI so much more dark and heart-wrenching, but we got what we got.

Everyone was talking about kids and babies a few pages ago and I thought of this

 

Imagine Quizzy and Cullen bringing their baby to Cole because it won't stop crying and they don't know what to do and Cole knows what's wrong omg

 

Is it weird that in that scene, I'm picturing Cole wearing a bowtie and tweed jacket, ala the Eleventh Doctor?

We got something like this, less detailed and angsty though, in the Templar quest.

Josephine was all sobby and panicky in her cell, while Cullen was more angry and resolute than worried, in his. His comment about how he should never have allowed you to turn the Inquisition into a slaughterhouse makes for an interesting what if scenario if you're romancing him - implies that in this possible future Envy has planned for you, Cullen may have let you slip away with too much because it was you (only it wasn't), and when he realized how far you'd fallen it was already too late, you'd turned even against him.

Yeah, that entire sequence should have been way more depressing because of how dark that future was meant to be. I was a little surprised that our Red Lyriumed companions were still lucid enough to be on our side, I half expected them to turn on me and be forced to fight them off and/or kill them, just for the heartbreak factor.

 

For those you didn't bring along, it'd be worse if we found out their fates in this future. Perhaps Cassandra was forced like Daniel to become a Red Templar, Blackwall was experimented on because Alexius believed his "Warden" blood could cure Felix, Vivienne could now be possessed by a Pride Demon, Cole could have fallen into despair and become a demon, and in a grisly allusion to all those Ogre skulls hanging over doors in DA2, we come across a Qunari skull with all too familiar horns...

I tried it and chose it over the mages for my canon playthrough. I guess that makes me a shameless sadist
