I'll be disappointed if Cullen isn't a companion, but I think I'm at peace with the idea. And, as others have mentioned, I don't want to seem entitled or ungrateful. Bioware deciding to write him in as a love interest is HUGE.
My desire to see Cullen in DAI was a desire to see him in a prominent, meaningful role... not as titillating fanservice. I think his character is worth more than that after two games of development. And I trust Bioware to deliver on that end. If they couldn't find a rationale for writing him in as a companion, then it couldn't be done.
That's true. I think I'm coming to terms with the idea of him as an NPC romance. The good thing is that already his romance has to be different than Traynor/Cortez because Cullen is actually able to fight. Meaning that if we have a final battle scene, there's a good chance we'd get to say good-bye to him on the battlefield. Also, since he's recorded a good amount of lines, it's most likely not going to be a little fling. It'll presumably be a full-fledged romance, just minus the whole taking him around everywhere. I'm just miffed about the lack of party banter or his reaction to certain areas, but I'm assuming BioWare will still give him meaningful scenes. In ME3, all the good romance scenes took place back on the Normandy or in the Citadel, so a central hub will still ensure good scenes.
Also I just realized if he's a romance, our Inquisitor will get to actually. kiss. Cullen. I can't believe that just hit me
