It is probably cos he tripped over and caught his lip on something. I don't know why, but I kind of like the idea of it being from something really lame. We did suggest it was from a lion he killed with his bare hands so he could attain the fur he needed to make his fluffy pauldrons and now nonexistent helm.

I like that Brianne left this to our choice. We can all headcanon whether it was a clumsy shaving accident, or he took an arcane horror's claws in the face in Kirkwall, or he single-handedly fought three high dragons and an army of golems and ogres from the top of the cathedral, or he tripped on his new robes and faceplanted on his sword and that's why he wears his skirts all pinned up now, as we wish.

I headcanoned that the reason his robes are all tied up with belt and rope is because the first time he tried to transition to wearing his clothes differently from his traditional Templar robes and armor he tripped on them during one of his traditional panicked sprints and...
