If not I suggest you do a quick Google and read the blog post on it. It's quite extensive and makes some sense. The only thing that might stop you is if the guy is correct then you will have a decent idea how the whole thing is supposed to end, too.

yeah I think they rationalized it by the way the show is less supernatural and fantastical than the books. It's more of a medieval fantasy but stoneheart coming back would make it harder for an audience to get into it. Something like that

I've read the book Hobbit, but I went abroad last Christmas so didn't make it to cinema to watch the second movie. When I came back realiazed that every friend of mine has watched it, one of them was extremely cheerful when she found out, because I usually know more when it comes to movies, she felt like it's her chance. Long story short, she said with a evil smile:"I'm gonna give you spoilers." So she did. I waited until she's done, then I said "Thorin died". She stared at me blankly for about 30 seconds, then I add "So are Fili and Kili." So...yeah...I'm an evil person.
