So this is 100% fancruft and likely not intentional on BW's part (or is it?), but remember when we were discussing the meaning, if there even was any, of the Sword of Mercy apparently randomly pointing up or down on the Templar armor between games, way back when?
Well, there's this codex entry in Inquisition:
And then, if we look at Cullen through each game:
In Origins, when he, and the Kinloch Templars, were friendly and trusting to mages, perhaps too trusting to a fault, the sword was pointing up, presumably indicating innocence in the ancient Tevinter custom?
In DA2, when he, and the Kirkwall Templars, were now too distrusting, too afraid of mages, quick to judge and condemn, the sword was pointing down - indicating the "guilty verdict."
And now in Inquisition, where Cullen's reached a middle of the road, cautious and wary of magic and mages but not immediately condemning of either, the sword is pointing up again:
Not on his chest, like a stamp, but in the details, in the small personal things that are his, that he chooses to wear on his own, instead of a standard issue uniform that sums up everything he's about.
Again, this is possibly unintentional, and probably just a matter of redesigns looking cooler this or that way, but if it was done on purpose... that's some really neat symbolism there.
