I think what's different is that he *chose* to be a templar instead of it being expected of him. I could see both farmers and landed gentry thinking it's not a sensible thing for their eldest son and heir to do.

In contrast, I always used to imagine that they were farmers and immensely proud of him becoming something as important and upstanding as a templar knight.

True. Until the Fifth Blight, I suppose Honnleath was one of those quaint little village town with hardly anything dangerous going on. I mean I don't think dangerous blood mages came and terrorized everyone. Maybe it was those neighbors trusting neighbors and such except for Shale being decorated by pigeons and owner of Shale at that time.

Templars were seen in their best light in those situations. I bet they did some good samaritan work as well like helping the elderly or sometimes helping out with a big harvest. Hence, young Cullen saw the Order in their best light and heard only the good bits.

Don't know why I thought of him as a 3rd child. But I never took him to be the eldest in the family. I think his family was living the good life in their own way before Origin happened.

Can just anyone join the Order? I mean it puts people in such a position of power. You'd think you'd have to be from certain stock.

It's more a joke on the fact that David Gaider himself describes Cullen as "oblivious" when justifying why he never comments on Hawke's magic.

"DG: Jennifer wrote that plot, and afterwards, I forget what it was, someone said "You know, wouldn't Cullen happen to burst onto the scene and you're casting spells, wouldn't he say 'So you're a mage...'" It was too late for us to do anything about it and we decided that Cullen is just very oblivious."

I was talking about the flirting

In DA:I the flirting's quite subtle IMO, and he still get it all the smallest hints

I believe during the chess game he says that he has two sisters and a brother.

...you are absolutely right. For all the million times I've watched that scene, the second sister completely failed to register. I blame Cullen being so hot in that scene that I zoned out of the conversation.

Guess yes. Alistair commented on DA:O that there are both people from high standings & commoners no?

I personally agreed with Brianne's interpretation of Cullen being the second oldest child in the family because I feel like that's partly where he draws his sense of duty and his desire to protect from. My parents both happen to have multiple siblings and my oldest uncles have always felt more serious while my younger uncles are more playful. I feel like older siblings are more likely to be taught to set an example for their younger siblings and to feel the need to shield them from the dangers they've yet to face. They may be burdened with more responsibility than the babies of the family, and this could reflect in how they approach life. It fits with my image of Cullen as a caring, if strict, leader to his men. Who carries pictures of them in his pocket. :P

But of course that isn't always the case with all families - it's just my personal take based on my experiences.

Yeah good point. They do bar elves from joining (right?), so maybe that's where the class bit comes in.

Love this interpretation :)

Mia's the eldest, it's easy to imagine that Cullen is very close to her & both of them look over the younger ones. Somehow I imagine Cullen's the quiet one among the four.

I think you can technically, but it depends on where the Order is tho. You have to think about population, who's the knight-commander, etc etc.

Elves can join the Order even though we hardly if never see them in game.

Commoners seem to be able to join up just fine. If you don't take him with you, Carver is allowed to join up without any effort, long before Hawke returns with a bucketload of a gold from the Deep Roads to get back their family's noble status?

Plus does Samson look like the kind of guy who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth?

I like this background better too. Maybe because I've done the nobility thing before with Alistair and Sebastian and it's nice to change the dynamic a bit? But I imagine Cullen's family being very humble farmers, simple and honest people from tiny backwater Honnleath. Cullen becoming a Knight-Templar would have been a high accomplishment for the family, something they'd be very proud of in their small community back home.

I imagine they're still very humble people nowadays. Even with Cullen being the Inquisition's high Commander, the all-famous Inquisitor's own consort in playthroughs where he's romanced, his mama would still pester him to eat his beans and wear a coat outside when he visited, and 'da would still tell him to take those fancy robes off and help his brother weed out the crops.

I'm going to guess that Dalish elves will probably not approach a human-founded anti-magic police squad to go "hey, you guys look cool. Can I join?" ^_^;;

According to the DA Wiki, any races can join the Order. But if they are going to allow elves to join, it will be from alienages. But some human nobles have problem with giving arms to city elves so....

I think they meant, she was almost written as an elf? Not that she's elf-blooded, like Michel in Masked Empire?

A lot of the Order's rank-and-file comes from orphans left in Chantries all across Thedas. Nobodies with no name, no family, that grow up as church urchins until they're old enough to either join the clergy or the Order. There's a lot of training and studying and tests, though, so what would weed candidates out is that they're not fit for the work, more than their race or class.

As for elves and dwarves, there are examples of both in the ancillary books. Last Flight has a dwarf and an elven Templar, so they do exist. We probably just don't see them in game because, not only they're rare due to racism, but in practical terms that'd be one more armor to adapt to a different skeleton.

He means when creating the book, at some point Evangeline was planned to be an elf instead of a human.

Carver IS an Amell though. No matter how poor you are, people still care about blood. I mean, at least in our world, assume it's the same in theirs. (And I don't mean necessarily in our modern world but like, "back then" lol)

Samson, yeah, I know, but we have nothing to go on other than that he's a rat lol

But I'm leaning towards believing anyone can join.

Sometimes it seems like not much thought has been put into the world-building, but ah well.

o.O Yeah it would never occur to me to suggest that a Dalish would want to join the Order.

Then the whole "Evangeline picks up Rhys" scene would've had to have been scrapped

I think our quizzies also help him along with the flirting a bit seeing that as soon as you get to Skyhold, the two big flirts sound just as nervous as he does...

Then again, I don't think I'd be able to form a complete sentence in his presence either...  :P

ACK! Top again!

Well, there's that poor templar Keran & his sister Macha in DA2. They're surely from poor family.
