I think what's different is that he *chose* to be a templar instead of it being expected of him. I could see both farmers and landed gentry thinking it's not a sensible thing for their eldest son and heir to do.
In contrast, I always used to imagine that they were farmers and immensely proud of him becoming something as important and upstanding as a templar knight.
True. Until the Fifth Blight, I suppose Honnleath was one of those quaint little village town with hardly anything dangerous going on. I mean I don't think dangerous blood mages came and terrorized everyone. Maybe it was those neighbors trusting neighbors and such except for Shale being decorated by pigeons and owner of Shale at that time.
Templars were seen in their best light in those situations. I bet they did some good samaritan work as well like helping the elderly or sometimes helping out with a big harvest. Hence, young Cullen saw the Order in their best light and heard only the good bits.
Don't know why I thought of him as a 3rd child. But I never took him to be the eldest in the family. I think his family was living the good life in their own way before Origin happened.
