It seems to a bit...the prayer scene is hard to watch, in my opinion, if he is still taking it. (from you tube videos I have seen where it is a male quizzie who had him take it).  All iterations of that scene, he seems very...bitter about his choices...

 

Wait there the prayer scene is different if he's taking lyrium? Like how? Link? i'm super curious now.

Guys guys what is wrong with me? I got cullen to take lyrium again and since I'm not in a romance with him this pt I thought I could handle it. My man quizzy asked him nicely because he was in paaaain...and now I've reloaded the save because he looked so...defeated when he sipped it. Help? Does his personality change at all if he takes it, like at the war room banter or at halamshiral? I'm 1000% sure this has been asked b4 but there are 4300 pages in this thread. Help, cullenites?

As for personality I think he becomes more distant and colder but since your playthrough isn't a romance one you won't see it.

Tough call when I did that scene I just couldn't do it to him. But you're right it is just a game.

I thought it triggered a different cutscene just after Perseverance. Instead of Cullen breathing relieved in the battlements due to being free of his addiction forever, he is in the forgery, gazing at the swords with a melancholic glance...

Yeah, in my opinion he becomes much colder. Spoilers for the romance in case anyone hasn't gotten to it:

As a mage in a romance with him, if you ask him what he would do if you're possessed he acts very conflicted. Your Quizzy then assumes he would go through with putting her down, but he tells her it's not that simple and he'd rather not think about it. In the past he probably would have, but it's much less clear in this case and it feels like it could go both ways.

 

However, if he breaks it off with you after you force him back on lyrium (without promising to help him find another way later) and you ask him the same thing, he basically says something like "What do you expect? That I would jeopardize the safety of the Inquisition instead of doing what had to be done?" in a really cold and firm tone of voice. He goes back to being all business, because basically you've told him that his duties come before any personal desires or emotional needs. It was actually a bit shocking when I watched the video of it because I've been so used to him being softspoken towards my Quizzy, hah.

Ovbiously no, it wouldn't be an easy thing for him to do but I'd like to think that if my Inquisitor was in that situation that he wouldn't hesitate in putting the safety of everyone else first. I hate the idea of him living with the guilt of innocents dying again because of his inaction.

So since people were talking about favorite Cullen moments before, here's one personal favorite moment that's not related to his romance or personal arc at all: Blackwall's personal quest.
 
First, he drops a very apt Meredith reference. Possibly my favorite in the game, as it's one of the few where he doesn't outright demonize her.

 Then, allowing himself to be angry and feel betrayed without letting these feelings blind him to whole picture. Which a lot of the fandom doesn't seem to be capable of, but again I digress. Go Cullen for being the emotionally mature one for a change.

Then, even though you can respond in such different ways, from supporting Blackwall to being too angry for mercy to turning the question back on him, he remains focused on the importance of what Blackwall just did, rather than yours or his personal feelings on the matter:

And finally, being a strong believer in giving people second chances (knowing his history, right), his reaction when you condemn Blackwall point blank is to give you one of those looks of his and quietly obey, though he's obviously not comfortable with it:

tl;dr - even though this quest is all about Blackwall, I find this brief exchange a very interesting character moment for Cullen too, full of nuances of his personality scattered throughout the conversation.

I agree that these slides show a lot about Cullen's character. And I actually agree with almost everything he had to say, and

most of my IQs will spare Blackwall. But there are only two moments in Blackwall's entire character development that I feel you can be certain are genuinely him and not potentially meant to protect his cover as Blackwall/playing a role: when you first find him and he's organizing those farm boys to fight back against the bandits, and when he confesses to save his former soldier from execution. Those are why I would believe he actually was trying to atone and change, and why my IQs will spare him to give him the chance. But because his romance doesn't have any development past the point of "starting over," you are left with only the lie. To me, it cuts off at the moment the real romance should start. And doesn't. There's a difference between leaving some specifics to headcannon and leaving the entire person to headcannon. Hopefully people aren't being too rude about it; for all we know, his writer had written content past that and someone made the decision to cut it. He is a fascinating and well-written character, and she did an outstanding job creating a character that was going to genuinely make people feel betrayed, which is remarkable writing (which I think I've said before, but I also don't think my criticism of his romance is unreasonable.)

But I'm sure there are people who might find it tragically romantic if he couldn't so that's probably why it was left up to individual interpretation.

Yea... I'd have to say it would be really bizarre if he hadn't thought about it on his own. He seems like a pretty thoughtful person in general and he certainly doesn't take the whole idea of getting into a relationship with anyone lightly. I honestly couldn't imagine it being something he wouldn't consider as he was realizing he had feelings for a mage.

That's awesome! They did say Inquisition's storyline had been planned out since Origins and that DAI was the game they always wanted to make, so who knows how long they'd been sitting on the foundations of it.

Makes me achingly curious about how far in advance they have the future installments planned.
